KyoAni gets major props for depicting death and war in the most brutal and beautiful ways -- there's just something about Aidan's story that is so tragic and touching. And now, finally, Violet cannot keep it together in public...our girl has grown from a weapon to a woman and the emotions are all flooding out...
...and you tell me we still have TWO episodes and TWO feature length movies left?!

I remember after watching episode 10 thinking that the next one would not tear me up so much. Then I watched Episode 11 and they got me again. I was like Danu the first time that I watched it. Violet breaking down at the end and apologizing for not saving him as his family thanked her got me almost as bad as Episode 10. One of the things that Violet Evergarden does so very well is show how, that even though a war ends, the effects from that war linger on long after it ends. That so many have to come to terms with what they did during the war. And those who lost loved ones have to deal with the after effects, even in episode 10 the father had died during the war making it so the daughter would be left alone after the death of the mother. This episode shows how some people can not truly leave the war, it stays with them making them unable to live without it. Another thing that I loved from the first episode of violet evergarden is the portrayal of non-verbal communication. In episode one, Hodgins puts his hands in his pockets when Violet asks about the major. In this episode, Violets hands tightening at the end after she gives them the letters. The tightening around someone's eyes or the narrowing of their eyes. Its just so many little non-verbal cues where they focus in on something else even if a character is talking. The are using camera angles in the animation to display those non verbal cues. It just adds so much emotional power to those scenes. I will end this post before it becomes a book. 2021-10-14 03:15:18 +0000 UTCThe sense of hopelessness was profound in this episode...and that's such a good point; no preparation for the death here, which almost makes it hit harder. And OH! Wow, I hadn't thought about the connection to the OVA! It's like those other men beside Aidan...no one was able to write a letter for them...Aidan just got lucky in that regard with Violet. T___T Ahhh, I'm not sure I'm ready for the last two episodes after all this pain train...and then there's STILL two FULL LENGTH movies after that....but thank you for the kind words! :3

2021-10-13 13:24:37 +0000 UTCOMG this episode...I almost cried harder than in episode 10 because here there is even more of a sense of hopelessness. Aidan came home through Violet's letter but unlike Anne they couldn't really prepare themselves and steel themselves for this. I also think of the OVA episode and the opera singer. She did not get closure of any answers. No one was there to bring him home like Violet did...It's all just so painful!!!! Thank you for your reaction and can't wait for your reaction to the last 2 episodes (which kinda go together)

And yesss, Violet trying to make amends for her past -- I hadn't noticed that she didn't kill any soldiers; that's such a good point! Ahh, this was SUCH a good episode! T_T

2021-10-13 02:43:36 +0000 UTCUgh, I kept it together until the last scene with the parents and Maria, but no further. What especially got to me was Violet apologizing for failing to save Aidan. I felt like there was a double meaning to her saying "I'm sorry I couldn't protect him." On the one hand, it refers directly to the immediate situation with Aidan. On the other, it refers to her blaming herself for failing to save the major. At the very least, I guess, Aidan got to communicate his final message to his loved ones, unlike Gilbert. Another thing I loved about this episode was how it tied in to Violet attempting to make amends for her past sins. She didn't kill any of the soldiers, though she easily could have. Her going to Aidan to fulfill his request in the first place could also go along with that: whereas in the past she has prevented many from returning to their loved ones, here she has tried to help at least one soldier "return."

2021-10-12 19:12:21 +0000 UTCAnd here we are, episode 11 was probably my fav episode in the whole show, it simply explained "there is no such a thing as a letter that doesn't deserve to be delivered" elegantly. Funny story I watched episode 10 and 11 on the same day after each others, needless to say that wasn't the smartest move :D I would also like to point out that her entrance was illustrated beautifully in the LN The mysterious being slowly raised her head. Only her white face was truly visible amidst the darkness. “Forgive me for interrupting your conversation. I have taken the liberty to intrude from above.” Her voice resounded loudly, “Is Mister Aiden Field around here?” Speaking so elegantly and bearing a dignified appearance, she could be either an angel or a death god, leaving the men bewildered. As for how she found Aiden, he asked her in the LN “H-How… did you know where I was?” “Company secret. I cannot answer that.” She refused so curtly that he could only fall silent.
