Violet Evergarden: Movie #2 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Oh...oh this movie was the TRUE ending of the series.

I think I went through every emotion possible watching this two-and-a-half-hour film. The length is SO worth it and I was greedy and still wanted more by the ending.

The framing device, the animation, the soundtrack, the callbacks, the tension and emotional power of this film (YURIS @__@)...it was a tour de force, for sure.

The characters all come full circle, and if Benedict was a focus in the last movie, then Hodgins and Dietfried get their moments here...but honestly, it's Violet...and Gilbert's story. And I couldn't be more satisfied with the conclusion of this special series.

Violet Evergarden: Movie #2 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Oh my goooooossssssshhhhhhhhhh, Violet's loving look towards Gilbert as he helps her carry her luggage (and his missing arm sleeve looks like it's reaching for her!), and the festival picture! *heart clench* Those are so good! And you and Uncle C. Davis sent me the link to the light novel links, and I'm soooo thankful! Thank you so much! :D I love that there's still Violet Evergarden content to read after the series! ^^

Oh, I did mention in the livestream I'd link some of the official artwork depicting Violet's life after the movie. Here are some, but there's more out there: https://i.redd.it/72c8lz5rivt71.jpg https://i.redd.it/0jn306lo8q461.jpg https://i.redd.it/l8ht91njzj471.jpg https://i.redd.it/b71pi2e0mz361.jpg Also, I don't recall if this was mentioned in the livestream, but the light novel isn't just the first two volumes. Those mainly cover the series. Then there's Gaiden, which is a collection of side stories; Benedict backstory, for example, among other things. Then there's Ever After, which is Violet's life with Gilbert not long after the reunion. Last, there's the Booklets which were distributed at the movie screenings. The chronologically final installment is among these, namely "Gilbert Bougainvillea and the Transient Dream." This can all be found right here: https://dennou-translations.tumblr.com/post/159331691639/violet-evergarden-novel-index

That’s okay! I hate when that happens with Patreon! And ahhh, yes, the feeling of “nostalgia” and of history being revisited – the use of Daisy a plot device was really neat! And THANK YOU! Someone noted in the livestream today that it was Nerine – I love that so much, that character gets a callback! I think it would have been neat to have Taylor in that role as well – and I NEED to go back to that picture in the movie to possibly see Hodgins and Cattleya’s kids! **looks** OMG, I hope they are his kids and he got a boy and a girl! :) YES! I noticed the tear stains on the letter! I love the little details like that in this movie, along with the ribbon and I could see the man in the post office as either Violet’s son/grandson or one of the boys from earlier on in the movie with the mantis – I could see that, too! And yes! Netflix finally corrected Dietfried’s name! That’s really good to know about the “I love you” line, though! Nice!! And man…I felt the reaction of Violet in that last scene made sense…she’s waited all this time for him…what else can be said? UGH, the emotion of her crying, though…it got me.

Oh! Thank you for the link!! :D I really appreciate it! :D And ahhh, the music is SO GOOD with this movie...I'm excited to read these! :)

I agree that the first movie is sweet and wholesome but is kind of two OVA’s put together – I’ve heard it takes place between episodes 6 and 7 chronologically, so that makes sense, too. But this last movie…it’s my jam. 😊 I TOTALLY understand where you’re coming from a part of me is torn because I’d come to accept that Gilbert was dead and we get to see in episodes 12 and 13 how much Violet has grown – the but hopeless romantic in me feels if Gilbert HAD to come back…then this was a decent way to do it. I’m VERY glad they didn’t go the amnesia-route as well. That WOULD have been cheap. I definitely agree that Gilbert is right in that Violet doesn’t “need” him anymore…but she WANTS him. I agree with you about the plan to staying away; that theory is great! I think Gilbert didn’t go back because he wanted her to move on and he felt guilt for seeming an accomplice in having her serve as a weapon during the war. Yeah, I agree with you that the strawman fallacy is DEFINITELY there with Yuris and it’s not perfect – I took it as Violet doesn’t “need” the major, but she wants him in the end, and we set up the series showing how deep her love for him was and that like she told Dietfried, she could never forget him and truly move forward…so, I’m okay with the ending. I COMPLETELY agree it’s cliché but there’s a hopeless romantic in me that I can’t fault it too much…KyoAni’s animation and score don’t help, either, haha! NOW DIETFRIED…oh my gosh. My heart. I honestly LOVE Dietfriend and I agree, he may be one of my favorites in this show. We get SO MUCH with his character in the last few episodes of the series and this movie. The explanation of how he talks to others connected to his dad…honestly, I loved the relationship developing between him and Violet and at the start of the movie, before we got the reveal that Gilbert was alive, I thought the movie was maybe setting up something between Violet and Dietfried and I was honestly ALL for it! 😊 Roland and Hodgins are so good as well! I felt for Hodgins in this movie. Such a good father-to-be! Thank you so much for the kind words! I absolutely LOVED this series and I’m so glad you all voted for it! 😊 I basically gushed about Dietfried in the livestream, so there was that, haha! P.S. It’s so weird, in the credits, at one point I SWORE they listed her last name as Bouganvillea, and I was so confused! 😊

RIGHT?! Seriously, you knew that Yuris was going to die, but the way they weaved it into the entire movie -- the "You MONSTERS" part for me was when the brother (after the letter from Yuris is read to him) runs towards the bed and says, "Thank you, Brother!" I couldn't. COULD NOT. Yep, couldn't keep it together at that point, either. Yeppp, so many good moments -- and Dietfried's developing, cautious (I like that wording) friendship with Violet was SO GOOD! And that stamp...ahhh...that moment was so heartwrenchingly good, too! I seriously have developed a love for Dietfried's character -- I'm that meme where the guy says, "I hate anime," but has all the photos of anime everywhere. That's where I'm at with Dietfried, ahahha! Once you figure out his motivations and reasoning behind his actions (like when he tells Hodgins' "I only know how to talk this way"), I can appreciate his character so much more!

As for the analyses I mentioned earlier, here's the one on the inclusion of Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince: https://www.reddit.com/r/VioletEvergarden/comments/jun6i8/gilbert_bougainvillea_or_the_happy_prince/ Here's a post linking several other analyses: https://www.reddit.com/r/VioletEvergarden/comments/q6ym5o/violet_evergarden_the_movie_movie_discussion/ A really interesting one is on the use of music in the movie. While the movie has its own OST, many tracks include callbacks to specific melodies from the series.

Oh shoot, I think my comment got marked as spam because of the links I included. Guess I'll separate them out. I never knew I could feel nostalgic for a fictional time and place, but this movie somehow pulled it off for me. The fact that the movie's plot is sort of being 'retold' from Daisy's day changed how I view the series whenever I rewatch it. Now, it feels more like I'm listening to someone else's narration of events that happened long ago, which almost makes it even more enjoyable. Come to think of it, the entire story is essentially presented as past-tense narration by people Violet meets. We generally have no idea what's going on inside her head. The old lady in the museum was Nerine; she was one of the women Benedict tried to offer food to near the start of the series. I thought it would have been better to have Taylor plays this role, since she is the youngest of the cast. We do catch a glimpse of her in the group photo, alongside some children who might be Hodgins' and Cattleya's. I loved the small instances of continuity in this movie. For example, look closely at the first letter Daisy reads. You can see stains exactly where Ann's tears fell in Episode 10. Also, when speaking to that middle-aged man surrounded by children, Daisy stands in the exact same spot Violet stood when the schoolboys approached her. That man is, I'm fairly sure, the boy who showed her the dead mantis. We also see one of her ribbons tied to the fence in this scene. There is indeed a theory that the blond man in the post office is Violet's son. I'm fairly certain he's actually one of the children. We see a similar-looking blond boy accompanying mantis kid. While Netflix did fix Dietfried's name, there was one thing they messed up. In Violet's final letter, the words "I love you" are never actually spoken. Instead, she says something like "I've wanted to say those words right back at you." The actual "I love you" is the final, unspoken line that the camera zooms in on. It was meant for viewers to decode on their own. Finally, the reunion scene was apparently improvised. Violet's VA was told she knew her character best, and that whatever she came up with would go into the final product. There's actually an instance in that scene where I'm pretty sure we hear her mumble "aishiteiru" (I love you), though this didn't make it into the subs because there's no official script for this part.

Let me preface this by saying that i like the movie a lot and obviously i love the series as a whole, it holds a special place in my heart. Now, that being said, i think the last episodes fall off dramatically (11 onward), the last movie is kinda forgettable as it doesn't really add much in terms of substance imo. This movie is the somewhat cliche bow around it all, and i kinda "hate" it despite absolutely acknowledging its greatness. It hits all the beats that you'd expect, pulls all the heartstrings and yet for me, it kinda goes against what i think made the series so great for me. I don't mean to persuade anyone to dislike the movie or anything like that and it doesn't ruin the series for me, but imo the love between Gilbert and Violet was just a catalyst for the a selfdiscovery story, that was the interesting part imo, which is also why the last few episodes fall off so much for me, since they don't really add development for Violet, but rather just showcase how far she got. I kinda liked that it wasn't about their love, i liked that at the end she was able to be emotional and still able to move on. In my headcanon she took things slow but eventually found happiness without the major, i'm fine with that as an ending. But i'm really glad they didn't go the amnesia-route, that would have been outright cheap imo. But here's where i think they dropped the ball: Gilbert's reason why he didn't come back. Let me explain. I got the part of Gilbert being alive spoiled for me, but not much else about it. So ofc, my mind went racing to find a reason for all of this, and as is usually the case, i came up with a whole slew of theories that all sounded pretty good to me. Discussing them with the people that i've talked to about the series refined them into something objectively decent imo and the reason we get in the end imo is really disappointing in comparison. Here's what i and other people came up with, you be the judge :) In episode 1 we see Hodgins be really antsy about Gilbert being alive. First thought is he doesn't want to break the news because trauma and all that, okay. But then when he talks to Catalleya in the bar, he says "he's not coming back", not "he's dead". Now i took that as Hodgins being in on it. Why ? Because Gilbert feels incredibly guilty about the way he had to treat Violet. With him in the picture Violet could never move past following him, she could never be his equal. So my mind concocted a plan by Gilbert to make Violet independant, give her purpose past her soldier-life etc. And yes, let's make it a sappy reunion for all i care, but the point being that Violet doesn't NEED The Major anymore, but rather if she WANTS Gilbert when she doesn't have to. Nope, it's just Gilbert feeling guilty for being a soldier and Violet still needs The Major. Her not saying Gilbert instead of Major imo feels just wrong and no amount of "yeah, but she was so overwhelmed and fell back on what she knows" will ever change that for me. Also the fact that she ended the letter with "thank you" instead of "i love you" is just... ugh... didn't we just have a point about how if you don't tell your true feelings people will never know like half an hour ago FROM VIOLET HERSELF ? Yeah, i guess it's better in person, but she was about to leave for good. "Well maybe she didn't want to burden him ?" Right, thank you, strawman, because the kid about to die is not gonna burden his friend by writing that letter at all *eyeroll*. Sorry, it directly contradicts itself and it frustrates me... Now that all out of the way, i'm happy with what they did for Dietfried. He's my favorite character in the show, because i love tracking his story on a rewatch. The fact that his cruelty for Violet stems from him thinking that she is not grieving at all, because she is expressionless is just heartbreaking imo. For a second, i feared they would reveal that he knew all along, which would have been terrible, since that would remove the whole grieving part from him, that i find so compelling. Also, some people REALLY hate him, guess i have to root for the underdog :) Close second is Roland though, i just love that guy. Violet is out of ranking as she is the protagonist and without being invested in her one wouldn't watch the series to the end i think. Needless to say, i felt like Hodgins too many times during the series, haha. Oh well, i could ramble about all kinds of things. Glad you enjoyed the series. It truly is one of the finest imo. For a "love-story" this ranks extremely high for me, but i guess i like my romance with a twist (read: more than the whole 'will they, won't they ?' thing) and this kinda counts :) Looking forward to the livestream, if i can't be there, i'll be sure to watch the VOD 100%. PS: Cattleya's last name is Baudelaire, not Bouganvillea. Also remember that she was inquiring about the Majors last name, as in if he is nobility, which would be odd if she knew him in person, let alone be related to him. But ofc i know that it is a short scene that you've probably seen once like 3 months ago ? It's just one of the scenes my whole head canon theory thing stems from :)

Some of my thoughts, in a tremendously disjointed way: If you want to pinpoint the precise moment I hissed "You MONSTERS" at the screen, it came when they finally pulled the trigger on Chekhov's Sickly Child. When Yuris was first introduced I immediately thought "Well, KyoAni is going to make me watch this child die, so there's something to look forward to," but oh! OH, the timing! There I was, wallowing in the wreckage of my emotions after Gilbert turned Violet away, having *completely* forgotten about the poor boy, thinking I couldn't be more miserable, and oh, what's this? A telegram? I looooost it. A real coup de grâce to the last of my ability to keep it together, lol. So many little moments in this broke me, just cracked me like an egg, haha. Like, not getting to hear Violet's hymn to sea until Gilbert did? Great, thanks, let me just grab another tissue. Violet and Dietfried's cautious... friendship, almost, built around their love for Gilbert? That's the good shit, hit me again. The reveal of the STAMP??? If I hadn't been pinned to the couch by my cats I would have been rolling around on the floor, unable to contain myself. Speaking of Dietfried, his character development since the series was (1)so great and (2)apparently all it took for my hindbrain to decide that I love him now, actually. He's right in that "still *kind* of a bastard, but trying not to be" sweet spot that's like catnip to me. XD

Crying hours are here! I'm going to thread some notes I made when I originally watched the movie; I may have more again after I watch the reaction. (Thank god I don't have any zoom meetings today!)
