Januayaoi just gets better and better...and spicier, as we delve into this 3-part, feature length OVA series about two star-crossed lovers from feuding clans who try and wrestle with a changing world around them and the desire to kindle their forbidden love for one another...sound familiar?
This series was definitely explicit in its romance, but also very thought-provoking, touching, and beautiful. Now, hand me the tissues before we go onto the next entry!

And the reference to The Last Samurai is helpful! I actually got that vibe watching, so it's funny you said that! I may have to read the Embracing Love manga and do the OVA before the next Januyaoi because I really liked this story! And it would make sense if they were switching! Also, Kusaka's VA! @.@ Amazing!! Mmmmm...2010's is stretching it....it "barely" qualifies, so I may have cheated just a little bit, but the next installment is bonkers...so...it's going to be fun to listen to my sanity unravel, hopefully. >.<

You'd have to read a lot of Embracing Love to get to this part but it's worth it (looks like it's included in Vol. 3 of the official translations I see on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PWPNLS2?searchxofy=true&binding=kindle_edition&qid=1641873398&sr=1-1). It's been a while but I don't recall the manga version being very detailed about their story. The Boshin War was in 1868-1869, just to lock in the time period for you. This is about the same time as The Last Samurai movie with Tom Cruise. I think you'll like Embracing Love once you decide to watch the OVAs/read the manga. It features the first vers couple in yaoi (they don't switch often but they do switch). They are actors and at some point, they are in a drama - the drama made for the in-universe novel "Winter Cicada". The same VAs play the roles. Remember the creepy reporter guy from No.6? He's the voice of Kusaka (he was also Gide in BSD, the one who killed Odasaku) and the voice of Akizuki is the VA who plays Edgar Allen Poe in BSD and Blanca in BF :) Gosh, what the heck are you going to watch next? LOL - Hybrid Child (sad again) or Yarichin Bitch Bu (insane and very graphic)? I can't think of other yaoi OVAs from the 2010s. Oh, maybe Ai no Kusabi (2012)? Hitorijime My Hero is within the time range but it's a whole 12 episode series, so is Dakaichi. Ooh, there's the Kono Danshi series of OVAs - they're tame with interesting art styles. Hehe, I can't wait for next Sunday :) Japan has a long-standing tradition of choosing suicide over dishonor, so Akizuki's choice wasn't unreasonable for him, especially since he's been born and raised in a very old-fashioned, traditional family full of tales of honor. Not only was he denied his honorable death, but he's continuing to live dishonorably as nothing but a burden (from his POV) and endangering Kusaka just by existing in his care. Kusaka doesn't care about any of that but...ugh. He still has hope because he sees the world *is* changing but Aikawa's discovery of them...took away any hope that they could keep Akizuki hidden long enough.

I was sent the manga link for the two Winter Cicada chapters last night and gobbled them up...so....may not be able to wait until next JanuYaoi to read/watch the rest of Embracing Love! You can see they get together and living happy life in that series…😭✨They are also rivals in modern times. I promise you can feel their souls on Kudo and Iwaki!💓

It's something I'm starting to notice from my recent anime binge sessions and seems to span across all genres and time periods. I'm from England myself so I'm not complaining but it always catches me by surprise and I'm like 'huh, why is England somehow involved in the story for another one?'
