Yona's courage is put to the (Senjuso) test, as Jae-ha questions whether his growing closeness to Yona is purely the blood talking, or possibly himself. Speaking of growing closer, Hak has his own struggles as duty vs. desire starts to rear its head; blame it on all these hot dragons running about in the crew! Jae-ha's teasing doesn't help either!
And we've established our pseudo-antagonist for the remainder of this arc -- the stage is set, and we have a battle next episode! This was a great episode, and I can't wait for the next!

Yes! This show doesn't "overkill" anything, but isn't afraid to deal with darker themes in a genuine manner. And oooh, that's really cool comparing Yona to Haru! I would have never thought of that, but I agree -- their character growth so far has been similar; they're still the characters we know from the start of the show, but are simultaneously quite different! Nice! Thanks! I love the similarities and differences we're seeing with each of the dragons and their past and how it's shaped their personalities -- and I agree, I think the "come back" was not quitttte Jae-ha himself speaking... I wish I had Hak's fortitude! I can see that two people he'd care about being happy together would be fine with him...but that still leaves Hak alone, without being able to express his love of Yona and that's...kind of sad in its own way. But I get why that scenario at least seemed acceptable for Hak...until Soo-won killed King Il. Ah.... Thank you for the comment and have a wonderful day, too! :D

2022-02-11 16:07:39 +0000 UTCI also really like about Akayona that it doesn't shy away from giving us darker themes like children getting killed and human trafficing. Yona's character growth reminds me a lot of Haru's from free. They were both really natural. They also both didn't just became someone different. They're still the same person. I like that you pointed out that every dragon village resembles a different kind of prison. I didn't really thought about that. The "come back" scene definitely feels like it was the dragon blood. I do think they were bonding there but most of it is probably because of the blood. Yona's and Yun's friendship is so adorable. Their relationship has come so far already. The thing is Hak loves/loved both Yona and Soo-won that if they would have got together the pain of not being able to be in a romantic relationship with Yona probably wouldn't be as strong as the happiness of seeing the two people he cares about the most being happy together. So I can kinda see why Hak wouldn't had a problem with that, especially since he had years knowing that this may happen. Wish you a wonderful day!!

2022-02-11 12:11:12 +0000 UTCRight?! This series is so good at building tension! And yeah, Hak’s position and feelings are SO complex…and I feeling that’s not going to change anytime soon, is it? I still feel bad for him. Yeah, Hak’s basically a rugged saint. *swoons* He probably trusted Soo-won enough at the time that he felt he could be satisfied with him being with Yona…ugh. Hahaha! In any case, when he cares for someone, he cares immensely. Yeah, Soo-won’s betrayal to them rocked them to their core. @_@ And yeah, now he realizes that there is a POSSIBILITY of another option with Yona and it’s terrifying him! Yes, such characterization and it all coming to a head with the honey…I absolutely love Hak and how he’s SO much more than just a “meat-headed protector.” And yes, he’s JUST as traumatized as Yona, just in different ways and isn’t expressing it the same. And then, yessss, Jae-ha walks in to makes things even more complicated! I love the possibilities of the conversations and topics of discussion our green dragon is going to bring up, especially with Hak. 😊 Thank you so much for the kind words and comment! If I loved someone like he seems to love Yona, the prospects that I would watch her be with someone else (even someone I trusted and loved like Soo-won) would just be so lonely, because Hak would never be able to confess to her (for fear of ruining the good thing that she'd have with Soo-won) and would just keep those feelings bottled up inside. I can definitely see your point that he'd be happy and for Hak's character, be satisfied knowing she was safe and loved...I definitely do not have the fortitude or saintliness of our boy, Hak! Hahahaha! But yeah, Jae-Ha is seriously so good! The hype is real with him and he's probably my favorite dragon so far, although Kija grows and grows on me and Sihna is just a cinnamon roll. 2022-02-04 20:30:39 +0000 UTCI'm always surprised how this episode keeps me on the edge of my seat despite it being Yona's journey around a ledge for three-fourths of it. It's really well done when it comes to how it builds tension! I agree with you that it must have been hard for Hak to have been Yona's bodyguard knowing that she was in love with Soo-won. Like someone has pointed out, though; it's not as if he wasn't satisfied with his position and where he stood next to Yona and Soo-won. That's the complex part of all this. In the first episode, he not only urges Soo-won to convince Il about their marriage but also says something along the lines of, "As long as those two can be happy then I can be too." And in Soo-won's flashback, he once again is seen telling him to marry her, that he's the only one he wants to serve when Yona gets married. Not only did Hak care about Yona immensely. He also had a strong relationship with Soo-won. Arguably, he loved them the same, albeit in different ways. To him, these were his two cherished people, his best friend, and his crush. To have the honor of guarding them, a naturally protective person such as himself, I think he was incredibly satisfied and happy with that idealization. Even at the loss of his love and the reality of suppressing his feelings. So the fact that what drove them apart was one of those two precious people was incomprehensible to him. It wasn't conceivable and something he never expected. And this leads to his feelings for Yona in this episode. He had just spent too much time with the mindset that he'd be guarding them for life, that he was satisfied, okay, and happy with doing that and suppressing his feelings for her. So even after some time away from Soo-won, he hasn't completely acknowledged that doesn't have to be the case anymore with Yona. But then Jae-ha walks into his life, incredibly perceptive Jae-ha. He points out their distance and this causes him to begin to process that this reality that he wanted for the three of them can't happen anymore. It muddles up his feelings about where his place is now in Yona and his dynamic and... the honey scene happens. It's just great characterization! Hak is one of my favorite characters. He's very complex and multifaceted when it comes to his reaction to the trauma he experienced, even if it's less noticeable than Yona's, it's still eating away at him. I'm glad we're finally started to see some exploration of that within himself. If anyone needs it, it's him (as we saw) 😅 Anyways, there's a lot to talk about this episode, and I could go on, but this setup to some very fun episodes next. Can't wait to see your reaction! 2022-02-04 19:47:52 +0000 UTCI didn't have much to say about the episode in general, (but JAEHA!!! <3<3<3) Yet in your discussion you pointed out that "it would be the worst job" when you talked about Hak wanting to just protect Yona while she would be married to So-woon. I get why it would be a very awful job, BUT as a self-proclaimed expert of unrequited love, I'd say it's a very valid dream. like it would be sad, but at the same time, Hak would get to see her being happy with a man that she loves and Hak cares (cared) about. Because Hak loves them both and there isn't really a better place than a front-row to witness the people you love being happy, even if you have to deal with the certain jealousy of not being included in it. It's very complicated, but I think that the sole reason why it kinda goes from a depressing job to a job he would want, is the fact that he knows So-woon would not only make her happy, but he's a man he can trust and a man he loves(platonically) as well. (this all being Before king Il's death) If it makes any sense. I'm bad at explaining, but when it's about one-sided feeling, I gotta open my mouth in one way or another. nice discussion as always (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧
