This is the longest discussion of the season so far, and it is WARRANTED.
We call back to three years in the past, when Yelena and Onyonkopon first met the Scouts and how the seeds were planted with many things -- from the plan against Marley with Zeke and Eren but also with the possibility of peace...sadly, there is much doubt cast over whether this peace is even still attainable (though we see there's still the remnants of hope remaining; Daddy Blouse, you beautiful man! And Nicolo!).
There is so much to discuss with this episode! Suspicion! Symbolism! SHIPS! Both literal and romantic! I can't wait to talk with you all about it!

WAIT WHAT?!?! Erwin and Levi's VA's have a radio show?! OMG! Uhm, YES PLEASE -- I'm staying away from YT in general because of the risk of spoilers now, but once I'm caught up ABSOLUTELY! I would love that! nd the fact that Eren and Connie have a radio show as well...wow....I would love that!

I don't know if you know this, but Levi and Erwin's VAs have their own radio show together, and there are TONS of subtitled clips (some about AoT and some about other shows they're in together) on YouTube. Maybe after you're done with the series I can send you links for a couple of gems. Eren and Connie's VAs also have THEIR own radio show together called AoT radio, and a bunch of clips from those shows are on YT as well. They even bring on guests like Jean and Mikasa's VAs. They had Gabi's and Falco's on there too. It's some serious conversations but also a lot of hilarious banter and shenanigans. Seemed like something you would enjoy.

The Japanese VA for adult Levi actually voiced the short lines for starving kid Levi as well. Male characters in anime almost always get a different VA (sometimes a female) for the child version of the character, but this was an exception. The director wanted him to do it, and he said that it made him very nervous, because it's practically unheard of in the industry. You can tell it's him, even though the lines are simply, "Levi. Just Levi." I think he killed it.

2022-02-15 19:24:39 +0000 UTCI don't know if you made this connection because I still haven't watched your earlier reactions, but I personally believe Levi's obsession with cleanliness (to the point of showing what seem to be actual OCD symptoms) came about as a result of the trauma of sitting in the same room as his dead and decomposing mother for who knows how long as a child, not to mention being raised in a brothel up until that point anyway. I always hoped she at least found somewhere else to put Levi when she was with her clients. Really dark stuff.

2022-02-15 17:39:04 +0000 UTCThank you for taking the time to rewrite this! :) And yesss, the swords are clearly Levi's style! :) I love that they make him the unique fighter that he is, with how he holds them too; you're right, the thunder spears just wouldn't have the same technique with them. And YES, I think Levi is very sentimental and carries things with him for a long time. The Scouts cape, holding the teacups the special way he does, his cleaning habits. He knows what works for him and doesn't want to change too much too soon...and he's a big softie on the inside...he's just incredibly good at hiding it. And that's a good point -- he has attacked humans with those blades, that's fair to say! :) But I agree too, he came to Paradis with the intention that if it did fight, it wouldn't be against a civilian. It was supposed to go on whichever video you were talking about Levi bringing blades to fight titans, not people: I think Levi was using the blades because they're an integral part of why his technique is so precise and uniquely deadly. Remember that he even holds them differently than everyone else. You can't get that level of finesse from thunder spears. I also believe another reason (maybe even a bigger reason) is because deep down he's incredibly sentimental and he misses the Erwin days. Same reason he refused to ditch the Scouts cape. He was the only one wearing it. I imagine Hanji even tried to talk him out of it, because it would detract from the nighttime stealth effect of their new black uniforms (which he was also wearing). A lot of people don't realize how big of a softie Levi is. It took me a few watches of the show to realize just how sentimental he is, how he took Petra's patch to remember her and then gave it away to bring solace to somebody else, and other moments like that. I agree with you that he isn't there to kill civilians, I just don't think him choosing the blades had much if anything to do with that. Levi has killed plenty of humans with his blades, not just titans.

He's so wonderful; Isayama is plain CRUEL for giving us such a wonderful ship with Niccolo and Sasha...only to have it already sunk. :( The scene with Niccolo and Sasha was everything I needed in this episode! And seriously...Gabi is literally Eren from Season 1....I don't get the hate from people that like Eren. But, who knows, eh? Thank you for the kind words and have a wonderful day, too!

But I have to say I have a crush on her. She's just too pretty. XD The scene with Onyankopon was so good. Sasha and Nicolo are my second favourite ship. Just from the few moments we saw you could see how much Nicolo cared for her. And the scene between him and Sasha's father? Just amazing. A lot of these big haters of Gabi I've seen are hating her but are on board with Eren. They probably only hate her because she killed Sasha. Wish you a wonderful day!!

That does at least give me HOPE that Isayama has things planned with Eren and we're going to find things out...melancholy and sadness is definitely how I feel with his character now and it's so frustrating to not have the full picture...which is Isayama's intent and I loathe/love him for it. :P

I can only say how I felt at this time in the story … and a lot of how I felt was melancholy and sadness for what seemed to be the loss of the passionate boy that ‘appears’ to be missing. Eren is incredibly emotional character and his experience has warped him into what ‘seems to be’ a twisted version of himself. If before the timeskip the biggest mystery was how this world came to be than biggest one for after the skip is most definitely Eren. Isayama definitely designed it that way. Although .. I’ll have more to say on this for ep 10 Looking forward to future manga discussions! It’s where Isayama shines. Not to say the anime is bad by any stretch but you’ll see 😊

2022-02-07 17:17:53 +0000 UTCOoohhh, yeah, definitely have been putting "no spoiler" warnings for Zeke in these upcoming episodes, because I want to experience the surprise as his character unfolds, because I just KNOW that there will be a lot on him later given to us. I do agree that pre-time skip, we get a lot with Eren -- maybe not during the Utgard parts or in the early fourth of Season 3, but otherwise...it's so frustrating because after the timeskip, it's like the narrative distances itself from Eren and we "SEE" Eren, but we don't get things as much from his perspective or get what he's thinking -- I'm sure that's intentional, but it's so frustrating for me as the viewer, haha! And yessss, that's why I'm so excited for the manga after I've finished season 4, to go back and re-experience the series with a new pair of eyes. :)

You know this kinda reminds me of when you went through RWTW way back when and you were soo desperate for Haiji crumbs 😄 Bit more existential dread with this one but similar vibe It’s interesting that you say that Eren has a lack of voice in the narrative. I think the exact opposite. Particularly pre time skip. I think there’s plenty of examples of his care for his people ie Paradis island, for his 104th comrades and most importantly Mikasa and Armin. It may be because it’s your first watch through…but hey I have had almost a decade with this series (started the anime in 2013 and picked up the manga during season 2) but that is the beauty of AOT. You could theoretically rewatch the entire series after every new episode and get something different each time

Thank you for not spoiling the manga – for better or worse, I am looking forward to what was left out of the anime that I’ll experience in the manga! That should be fun and exciting to see! Although, that is sad those moments weren’t animated for whatever reason. I’m glad to at least see here her emotions with Sasha and her connection (despite the terror of it) between her and Eren! I remember everyone saying they shipped Armin and Annie back in Season 1 and I got it from their interactions in Smile, but I didn’t realize how it would carry over to this season…and I can’t wait to see the reveal in the manga! 😊 And Ooooooohhh, yeah, if Annie is indeed conscious and can hear Armin….hmmmmm…..interesting! 😊 I just love the fact that he confides in her. And yeah, Annie’s kind of reciprocated the kindness back to Armin…sooo….I’m definitely a fan of this ship, to say the least! 😊 And yeah, I joke about Bertholdt’s memories influencing Armin, but it was all there before, so this is just a bonus. Now…I’m glad that there is the previous relationship developed between Armin and Annie, because like you said…not wanting to think about Eren having any romantic feelings for Carla. Nope. No thanks. I’ll stick to maybe this being Armin to Annie like Historia is to Ymir, perhaps? That would be nicer. And yessss, Armiiiiiiiin! <3 AND SERIOUSLY! I’ve wanted romance in this series, but not like this! UGH….and the ties to the roses and the theory of Niku being his name….yes, THANKS ISAYAMA. I’m sure he’s just leaning back in his chair and chuckling at us all losing our minds. Thank you for reminding about them being from “conquered nations” and not Marleyan. It’s sad that Armin knows Eren best, but is still unsure about him. That says a lot. ☹ And yesssss, I’m so curious about damn Zeke and his past…I know we’ll get things eventually…it’s just such a carrot on a stick, you know? Isayama….. Yes, I feel like we as the audience (and maybe the manga gives us more) have seen Eren be vocally supportive of Armin and Mikasa…just not as vocal as say the other cadets are amongst each other. The lack of Eren’s “voice” in general I think is noticeable for me – Most of Season 2 is without Eren until halfway through and even for the latter half, he’s knocked out. And then in Season 3, Eren isn’t given much room to speak until around “Wish” and afterwards in Part 1 and then he gets more in Part 2 (where we see him REALLY vocalize his care for his friends, specifically Armin), but also YESSSSS, FUNNY THAT Eren isn’t in “Trust.” I just watched Episode 11, and for “Deceiver,” He’s not there, either. Hm. Thank you so much for the kind words and comment! I want to draw Floch with a Burger King crown so badly…one of these days! I love Brienne, too! And seriously, Yelena and Onyonkopon just showed up like, “Here we are, to steal the scene!” 😊 And yeah, it’s so sad, Erwin would have probably have had so many questions for them as well…ugh…. That is crazy that Mikasa was recanting the words from Ep 6 in S1! I didn’t realize that! @_@ It’s so sad that Isayama gave us a ship with Niccolo and Sasha…only to have it already dead on arrival. How dare he. And Connie saying half of him is gone? T_T Also, the fact that Eren has joined the Glow Up Club with Jean and Reiner is…concerning. More on that next episode. @_@ And yeah, Eren’s attitude and the way the story frames around him…he just has a tragic figure vibe to him, and with the world (at the time) being so against the titans and Eren able to BECOME one, I wondered if he’d become an antagonist in this story…I had no IDEA just how Isayama would complicate this story and this world like he has, though. I’m SO GLAD y’all didn’t spoil me way back then and still haven’t now! Thank you!! It’s really made this all the better watching!! ^^ And we’re only halfway through the final season (part ONE)….*nervous laugh*

He didn't sign up for this. And that's a cool note about the dad being Isayama telling us that Annie wasn't dead. I love that. You know what else I love (despite my tears)? That point about Niku....damn...hadn't even considered that. Welp...time to cry some more, but seriously, Nicoolo was hooked after Sasha slayed Dat Lobsta. Yeah, Yelena and Onyonkopon must have decided to make some instructional pamphlets for the Paradis' people about firearm safety after watching Hange be so reckless with the pistol. :) And I love Onyon so far, but yeah....I'm sad he's the only one representing for the series. Still, he's great.

It's crazy what perspective can do in this story. It's why I always come back to it. Can't wait to check out the manga after the show is over. Isayama you cruel yet lovely soul. He manages to rip you apart & feel kindness at the same time while keeping you guessing as to WHAT IS HAPPENING?!😂

2022-02-05 22:30:02 +0000 UTCAlso in dedication to Sasha & Mikasa's friendship my favorite memories of them is back in Season 1 when Sasha asks for Mikasa's potato & Mikasa eats it with Sasha's look of disappointment😂😂😂😂& when Mikasa blames Sasha for the loud noises to Keith & Sasha is already traumatized from all the running last time lol then Mikasa feeds her the potato. It's the simple loving moments that I love so much with those two. For the Chaotic trio there's so many moments!! I can't get to them all but I do love the scene of them ambushing, riding & screaming together back in Season 3 I believe. It encapsulates there personalities as a trio so well. Love them.

Yes all 3 of them are separated in these scenes & I loved seeing what each of them are going through & how they are dealing with the aftermath of not only Sasha's death but Armin acknowledging the peace diminishing & that they've started war with Marley & the world. This whole thing with Armin telling the story to Annie is just so powerful like it was so unexpected to me, I thought he was alone lol Omg Not Floch with a Burger King Crown!!😂😂😂😂I'm crying lol Also Brienne of Tarth is Queen!! Yelena & Onyonkopon man what a way to introduce them into the story. This really changed the game for Hange & the crew. Erwin would've loved to have seen this😭 I can see Hange being excited, Erwin trying to keep his cool but is so excited & intrigued while Levi is doing Levi things lol *Silent Judgement*😂 Mikasa saying Fight or Die, Win & Live is basically her reciting Eren's words to her back in Season 1 E6 If you lose, you die. If you don't fight, you can't win!” It's like giving her comfort & drive to keep pushing on even at this devastating state she's in, similar to the scene of Eren saying fight/ TATAKAE in the mirror. Her curling up with her scarf grieving Sasha at the graveyard😭 Yes Nicolo we love him. I'm glad Sasha got to taste his amazing food too. Seeing that flashback gave me a little peace with Sasha's death. Still so heartbreaking having to see our gang go through it. King Jean blaming himself for Sasha's death I can't. It's not his fault. It was just a terrible situation & everything happened so fast. Connie saying him & Sasha were twins & half of him is gone😭PAIN. It's so sad seeing them grow up & becoming these soldiers that can stand on there own but at what cost. Sasha is that cost. Ruining the potential for peace was the cost. I agree with Armin but it's just hard to wrap my mind around peace when Marley & the eldians over there has been brainwashed to see them as nothing more then devil's. It's in the history books & everything. Not everyone will make peace but some do & we see that with Sasha's Dad & Nicolo. It's complicated. Omg Levi being a whole dad with Eren fr😂He's lowkey Eren's uncle now that I think about it. Giving me Dad/uncle vibes lol Also IKR WHY DO WE SEE EREN BEING HOT BUT NOTHING WITH KING JEAN & REINER lol even tho they pull it off just by being in a scene tbh lol not complaining tho Eren is adorable too even with his dark vibe lol I can just here Hange & Levi saying "It's another phase"😂Btw I've always been so baffled with you predicting Eren being in an antagonist back in Season 1. I was like HOW?! But it's always been there. That drive. Seeing how far he's come & what's driven him to be who he is. What it takes to continue to fight. It's alot & it's been there since the beginning. Crazy. I never expected seeing Eren this way so it was cool to see you call it from the start. 2022-02-05 21:44:40 +0000 UTCCan I just sing Mappa praises for a second because we are finally glimpsing manga Mikasa with their adaptation. You may have had people mention this before but I will give my opinion that WIT did a piss poor job with Mikasa’s character. There’s soo many beautiful moments that were either changed or cut completely during season 1 to 3 (Don’t get me started on S3 Pt1 in particular) and it still aggravates me. I’m not going to go into details obviously because I know you want to discover it for yourself as you mentioned in the intro She’s a wonderful introverted character with a real quiet strength and cares for her close found family deeply. When this came out and soo many reactions were like “Wow I didn’t know Mikasa cared about Sasha” I just died inside every time. I’m sure others will comment this but I love the moment where Mikasa and Eren at the end are both thinking of the moment that they had in 1x6 together as they are repeating Eren’s speech in that episode in unison *chefs kiss* I’ll start by saying that I have been shipping Armin and Annie since season 1. So you can imagine how I lost my shit when the reveal of Armin talking to Annie crystal came up in the manga. Armin visited Annie knowing that she more than likely wouldn’t respond but still wanted to update her and confide in her 🥺And now we know that Lara Tybur was conscious in her crystal … well you can extrapolate from that what is happening on Annie’s end. Isayama very clearly establishes a bond between these two very early on. The whole Female Titan arc gave hints to Annie favouring Armin and caring for him than any one else. She spared him soo many times. And Annie is smart. She would know that it’s best to kill him as he is far too smart to be kept alive. And she was in full get the mission done mode at the time sooo why didn’t she? “I never expected you to push me this far. Why didn’t I kill you then?” - 1x23 “I’m hurt. When did you start looking at me that way … Armin?” - 1x23 With my best boy Armin for a WHOLE MONTH had suspicions about her real identity and didn’t say anything to anyone. He wanted to give Annie a chance to talk things out with him. Yes, he definitely constructed a plan (with Erwin) to trap her underground but he wanted to understand her too. There’s also a lot of subtle things that Isayama puts into his panels for them. And all this happened BEFORE Armin becomes the colossal titan. So yes, the meme of Bert having a crush on Annie and then Armin gaining his memories can be funny. But it’s no different then if Bert and Armin sat down and were having a conversation about her and Bert talks about his romantic feelings and memories with Armin. I’ve been in those situations were I have a friend and all takes is an anecdote from someone for me to see them in a different light. And now that Armin is maturing and finally has time to actually think about his emotions, it’s no stretch that his already fond feelings of Annie would grow into something more romantic. Anyway it gets into gross territory if they were influenced by the memories and 9 titans throughout history would be all kinds of fucked up. I don’t see Eren suddenly having romantic feelings for Carla. Or Galliard suddenly having feelings for Historia. Also on a silly Aruani fangirl note - the way they say each other’s names sends me! Seriously you two stop being soo cute 🥰 As for another ship… Isayama, you broke our hearts with Sasha’s death so you can’t make it any worse right? Right?! Well she was most likely in love with a marleyan who clearly worshipped her and cooked for her and their love proved that the two sides could put aside their difference and connect and you revealed this AFTER she died … THANKS ISAYAMA. I don’t know if someone already commented but the bouquet of white roses that Niccolo put there symbolises eternal love. Again THANKS ISAYAMA. And one more for the pain train, it’s just a fan theory that because Sasha’s last word was niku (meat) it sounds an awful lot like an attempt at his name or a nickname. Again THANKS ISAYAMA Few things Onyankopon and Yelena are established to be from conquered nations so they aren’t marleyan. All Yelena said is that Hange was wrong about them being ‘secret agents’. I’ll actually say that Armin absolutely does know Eren the best out of all of the cast. Yes I’ll agree that there are things that Armin is unsure of and misunderstood about Eren but he 100% knows him the best out of everyone. Reiner I think would be 2nd. Of course Zeke wouldn’t tell Marley that he is royal blood. Kruger points out that Dina would have been forced to bear children for them. And god knows what else. Now that we know that Zeke did know that he had royal blood child he wouldn’t disclose information like that. Otherwise ‘bad things’ will happen to him. It’s hard to talk about Zeke at this point in this story but you have to remember that we don’t know the context from Zeke’s perspective. Not just as an adult but more importantly as a child too. 1:21:20 - hard disagree about this. Eren has always vocally cared for Mikasa and Armin and the others. I know you were probably just jesting but just thought I note this It’s funny you connect this episode to episode 3x4 ‘Trust’ as that was the only episode Eren did not appear in at that point of the anime 😄 IRONY Long comment is long again but excellent analysis again! It’s such a joy to see you be this involved with the comments and other people’s perspectives and be soo passionate about this story. It’s rare to see on this reaction platform ✨

Eren: "Armin have you seen Bertholdt's memories?" *Armin sees memories of Bertholdt pleasuring himself off to Annie* Armin (awkward tone): "Huh.... yeah, but nothing that seems ... helpful." 😳 When Mr. Leonhart in Ep 4 was telling Ms. Braun, "Annie isn't dead". I think that's essentially Isayama speaking to us, through him. Nice mechanic. Something I think was deliberate in naming. Sasha's last word was "Niku", which stands for Meat. Her bf's name? Niccolo. So her last word could mean more than just one meaning. But I am truly happy Niccolo was able to introduce the world's cooking to her, she devastated Dat Lobsta! This episode does show how Paradis acquires repeating firearms, bolt-action rifles and semi-automatic Mauser pistols. They've been using old flintlock muskets this entire time, a side effect of the Secret Police cracking down on new tech.
