Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 10 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 *BROTHERLY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Kiryuu -- you complicated, frustrating, interesting man! I am SO intrigued by Touga Kiryuu and his antics in this series, and THIS episode, he puts a lot of things into motion through manipulation!

Just like last week, there are a lot of things to discuss, theorize about, and wonder about for the future, but for now -- Kiryuu is becoming a formidable "Antagonist" already!

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 10 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

John Wick be damned! XD And yeah, I agree that Nanami seems to immediately regret her decision, so me teasing her about being a “cat killer” (because y’all know I’m going to do it from now on) is mainly in jest - if I was seriously mad at her, I’d let y’all know - but it’s more a joke now, because she has learned (somewhat) from it. But HAHAHAHA - Thank GOD Nanami hasn’t reached the level of Knives yet! Can you imagine!? But oooooh, so true; we have roses in this series…so who’s to say someone WON’T go that route? 😛I could say more, but y’all will have to get to my theories for a certain episode first. ;)

Haha, yes, I didn't think about it until I saw your reaction bring it up - but payback's a bitch! I'll have to mention that, she'll enjoy hearing the animals are all plotting Nanami's demise now! John Wick be damned! I also thought about bringing up the serial killer connections - killing animals at a young age particularly feeling nothing for the animals. I still give Nanami some credit for appearing to immediately regret her action and running to save the kitten after pushing it in the water, but being unable to change things. So I don't think we have a Knives situation with Nanami just yet! But if anyone ends up being a plant - or even a rose on this show, would I even be surprised?! I can't wait for more BONKERS episodes!

This show is BONKERS but it's soooo good! Oh noooo, that sucks that your daughter had to witness that -- just tell her that Nanami is paying forever now that all the animals hate her for her crimes! XD I really wasn't prepared for Touga to IMMEDIATELY burn the diary! I'm very curious to see where the story goes, but I agree 100% that Nanami needs to get away from her brother and make some friends outside, maybe Utena and Anthy! We shall seeeee! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words!

Still, she knew that it would die. Her looking at it as it floated towards its death was pretty indicative, for me anyway. She's paying for her sins, though, now that all animals hate her, so I guess that evens it out. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the comment! I'm a little scared to read all of this because I'm still so early in the series and I'm avoiding any spoilers - whenever we get to the episode where it's safe to put all this out there for Touga's character, please feel free to re-post this and I'll be happy to read it! Thanks!

I've finally caught up (in episodes), just finished watching episode 10 - with my daughter! We've been loving the show, it's absolutely crazy! The poor cat oh no, Nanami is on my daughter's shit list now, "I hope she dies a horrible death" ahaha. I had to convince her cats can swim and the box was open, but I really don't think she bought it, and her favorite animal in the world is by a long shot, cats. There's some hope still, so I choose to believe the cat is alive still. And they better not ever prove me wrong in a future episode! If nothing else, I suppose we can count this one as a win for the poor horses in other anime. I'm super curious where the show goes with the plot. Did not expect to see them burn the exchange diary either. I haven't watched your reaction just yet (I absolutely will be of course when I get a chance), so you may have covered some things in more detail, just felt like dropping the quick comment! And Nanami really lost some ground for her likeability this episode I feel, it was a little painful to see her jealousy flare up time and time again. Poor girl needs to make some friends!

L Freya

In Nanami's defense, she didn't kill the kitten with a hammer, she put it in a box and sent it off, which a little kid might believe wouldn't kill it. It still makes me wish the Kangaroo had knocked her out.

Wow this is such a great analysis!

This could be entirely my own interpretation from what we have seen until now, but I believe that Touga is fulfilling the role of a toxic male to preserve the patriarchal gender roles. Everything he has done till now has been to protect his own role as the dominant man. He has this persona as a noble prince or a knight who always protects the ladies, but then he is a womanizer who sleeps with as many women as he can without showing a glimpse of true care for them afterward. It kind of seems like he never cares for others, only for what others can give him. Every time he shows care, it is because it benefits him. Even as a child, he acted as this distinguished prince who cared for his sister because he would be praised for it, and it would keep his sister on his side. He showed love for Nanami in front of others and then ignored her to be with the cat. Nanami kind of internalized this as love is finite. If her brother loves anything else, he won’t have enough love for her, so she gets rid of the cat. That is why she is so jealous of every woman he seems to chase. She is not jealous of the women he sleeps as far as we have seen, probably because she knows he does not care for them. Touga is constantly feeding into her delusion because it is convenient for him. He does not kiss her tears away but caresses her face affectionately. He gets rid of Saionji while pretending to be his friend because he is the closest to a rival he has, so he needs to get him out of the way. I kind of see him as playing his part in a play. He is taking advantage of the patriarchy to elevate himself. He pretends to care for women to take advantage of them, including his own sister. He also pretends to care for men, using his friendship with Saionji to keep him beneath him and get rid of him when he gets in his way. He is the protagonist prince that all ladies want, and he has to keep his position without breaking his facade. Right now, the one that seems to threaten this is Utena. In his eyes, Utena is probably a maiden dressed up as a prince going off script to threaten his high position. He constantly puts himself as “her” prince to force her back in her place. I am not saying he is completely evil or does not care for anyone. But everything he has shown is learned behavior that some men have shown for years, pretending to support others for their own benefit. And I find this so interesting in his character. They could have made him outright evil or misogynistic, but instead, they made a manipulative male character that supports the pretty facade of patriarchy because it is convenient to him. Sorry for the rant.
