The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*CONTEMPLATIVE HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

MaoMao definitely knows her status in the "system" of the Imperial Palace and makes it abundantly clear to a slightly "crushing" Jinshi that while he may harbor feelings towards, their fate isn't completely in each other's hands!

Meanwhile, the set up of two deaths begs the question of if they are suicides or murders...and MaoMao realizes the wrong conclusion could cost her life.

The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Yeah, Sun Yaoting was definitely born in a better time than eunuchs prior! I’m SO SO SO glad that Jinshi got cleared up on that misunderstanding so quickly! Agreed about the perspective business! MaoMao is SO pragmatic (to her disadvantage…or maybe ours as the audience?) at times! And of course, Jinshi is taken aback by how serious and “practical” she is - Jinshi is DEFINITELY idealistic and a romantic and MaoMao is pragmatic and a realist - what a star-crossed match! Hahaha, I agree - I hate how people feel they should take their lives - MaoMao presents a very clear argument otherwise! But yeah, I’m not into poisons so much, either! 😛 And yes, MaoMao enjoying alcohol makes all the sense! I love the idea of him being a lightweight and her a heavyweight with her tolerance of poison! 😛 I also love how the show links things back from the beginning as well! Definitely agree that it felt closer to the end of a cour, when we still have some episodes to go! 😀 MaoMao and Jinshi…are we sure MXTX didn’t create them and give them to the author (because they’re a heterosexual couple? Because they DEFINITELY feel at times like they belong in one of her novels…maybe the author has read MXTX and we just don’t know it! And while Jinshi was silent…we all know he would if push came to shove take it on, because he loves her. *wrings head in hands* ANYWAY! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Thank you for the comment and kind words! It definitely makes sense why she wouldn’t want to choose Jinshi - it just wants to make me “gently” shake her because she has no idea how it broke Jinshi’s heart. Also, it’s insane because based on the book I’m reading, Eunuchs would have VERY much been all over the brothel (or many of them would) have and it shows MaoMao’s understanding of sex and pleasure might be a little…mistaken. Just because her dad’s a happy celibate doesn’t mean all of them are! #justiceforGaoshun But it does make sense that she wouldn’t want to get Jinshi caught up in this because it’s her boss…why must this be a workplace relationship!? NOOOOOOO – The poison scene was so beautiful! But also so sad - I don’t want bad things to happen to either of these people! Exactly - she knows he doesn’t want to kill her but would be just as powerless as she is…or is he?! UGh. And yes, Gaoshun - I pity that man to the fullest! Thank you for the comment!

Amazing reaction as always 😁 I just wanted to go back to why did MaoMao sought Luhaku and not Jinshi, because in my opinion her upbringing played a major role in how she is and feels. MaoMao was raised by her dad but also spent a lot of time in the brothels, she always saw the transactional nature of relationships there . It alsa gave her a very keen sense of independence, MaoMao doesn’t like to owe someone something or a favor, if you are going to do her a favor she will find a way to pay you. And that’s why Jindhi was out of question for her 1/ payments by pleasure : pragmatic as she is , she thinks eunuch = no pleasure 😭 2/ money ? Jinshi is the head eunuch so he is apparently not in need of money. Also Jinshi is literally her boss so he already has a power of life and death over her , as she said in that beautiful scene. So why give him more ammunition 🤣 *in MaoMao’s voice* I love the poison/death talk scene because it’s so artistic and the colors are beautifully used, talking about death in a sunset moment seems fitting!! But also MaoMao’s introspection and her giving her wish to Jinshi as how she wants to exits life if he ever had to sentence her. I also love the : ‘ it’s not a matter of would and wouldn’t but of can and can’t’ it ´s so brutally honest of MaiMao as per usual but with a microscopic dose of vulnerability because she is asking him for a ‘ favor’ Somewhere, she knows Jinshi won’t want to kill her, but if she ever did something death sentencing he won’t be able to stop it 😭😭 such a matter of fact view of life for a young girl 💔 I love how smart and able to read people she is but is a complete ignorant and oblivious of Jonshi’s affection for her! Our Poor Gaoshun in the middle is suffering 🤣

Be Happy

Sun Yaoting learning about what happened to some eunuchs with the previous reign sounds absolutely terrifying. Especially because there isn't the same period of time as we have in thinking back on how cruel and torturous punishments could be decades/centuries ago. I knew you'd appreciate the misunderstanding with Maomao's miscommunication with Jinshi quickly being sorted out 🤣 You definitely feel worse for Jinshi this episode when you see how he rushed through his work so as he could go see Maomao more quickly, and how much he was looking forward to seeing her only to learn she'd gone home. I love that this anime takes the time to backtrack certain events like this to show us another perspective. I love Maomao's pragmatism this episode. Both in regards to the death of Sir Kounen but also with her conversation with Jinshi about death and what method she would prefer if she's ever sentenced to death. It seems a very practical thought, but I can also see why Jinshi would be taken aback by that conversation with her. This moment I feel also shows the difference in their characters, just like when Jinshi was reminiscing about Sir Kounen. Maomao is pragmatic and a realist, Jinshi seems to be more prone to nostalgia and could be considered to be somewhat idealistic when he tells Maomao he wouldn't execute her. I relate a lot to Maomao's comment about never taking her own life because there are things in her life that make living worth it, though in Maomao's case those things are poisons and medical knowledge and mine are anime/donghua, books, and travelling 😂 It's fun getting to learn little tidbits of information about Maomao along the way, such as her love for alcohol. It's understandable considering alcohol can be as much a poison as many other things. But yes the banter between her and Jinshi in regards to the possibility of a legal drinking age being brought into place is hilarious and makes me love their camaraderie all the more. Also love that for once Jinshi got the upper hand with Maomao which had her chasing after him instead of trying to get away from him like she usually does 😆 I love that the wall protrusions link back to the case from Episode 3 of Concubine Fuyou. It's a nice way to connect Maomao's knowledge of the palace to how it's relevant to the current case. Also feel the call back, alongside all of Maomao's reminiscing of the deaths she's witnessed in the palace, makes this episode a great reminder for what Maomao's journey has included so far. Though in that regard it gave me vibes of the end of a season/cour in comparison to other anime I've watched, especially with the song playing over the memories and the choice in colour/lighting in that scene. *Definite* Mo Dao Zu Shi/The Untamed vibes with Maomao talking about Jinshi would likely be the one to have to pass the sentence if Maomao ever dies. Just no rain and umbrella scene in this moment to make our hearts break all the more 🥺 But it is a heavy burden to accept such a request from someone, especially someone you care about so I get why Jinshi was so silent after Maomao asked that.
