Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 11 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*GRACEFULLY RUTHLESS HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I knew that Kiryuu Touga was plotting and letting his manipulation lead to a moment like this, but DAMN - this was heartbreaking for our girl, Utena!

But, will Kiryuu's plan to shove Utena into a corner tear her down and make her submit or run away...or could this be that this is the push to make Utena grow and become her own person? We'll have to see for next week, but for now...let's talk about THIS episode!

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 11 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Yes! I remember someone telling me that during my watch of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it's good to be reminded! ;) Thank you for the comment!

Can’t remember if anyone mentioned this, but it’s been long rumored that Kowaru from Evangelion is based on Ikuhara, Utena’s director.

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I hate how Anthy is seen as helpless so often and yes, Utena being more like Kiryuu (albeit NOT nearly as douch-y) without realizing it in her trying to be too much like “the prince!” And YES - is it “really a good idea!” Nice; I’ve recorded somewhat ahead, but I’ll have to go back to that question in future discussions! Thanks!

Romaniablack

That's a really good point, too! Thank you so much for the comment and noting that!

YES! Okay, I thought it was William Tell, though I wasn’t incredibly familiar with the story except that he had to shoot an apple off of his child’s head. And that description makes a lot of sense in this episode! Thank you for the comment and info!

Yes! In addition to being about Utena and Anthy, I think it's also about the dueling system as a whole (saying that they've been doing this for thousands of times) and how its largely stopped being questioned (see the child asking questions about why they need to keep doing this and the father exclaiming "stop making me think for myself!")

Very glad you’ve caught on how Utena, in a rather nicer fashion, had adapted the same mentality as the rest of the student council. Projecting their wishes onto Anthy and not considering her capability in making decisions or saving herself. Utena sees Anthy as a helpless maiden who needs only her to be saved/or be a normal girl. That she’s the only one who can give her that life. It seems she may have adapted the prince persona a little too well :) Remember the question brought up at the beginning of some episodes of whether acting as a prince is “really a good idea?”

Shadow ladies are making a reference to the story of William Tell shooting an apple off his child's head. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_an_apple_off_one%27s_child%27s_head#William_Tell In this case, if the Tell's were forced to repeat the miraculous shot for an infinite number of times ("reduced to a target practice machine") then it's only a matter of time before the father misses and kills his son. This is referring to the fact that the staus quo with Utena and Anthy can't last forever. If Utena keeps having to fight, she's eventually going to lose, which is exactly what happens this episode.
