The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 10 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Thank you for the comments! I try to avoid any hints or clues of what's to come, but I can say I'm excited to see the next several episodes!

Hahaha, the plot thickening like honey, indeed! 😛 Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! This book is just insane and it’s been a fun read alongside watching this show! I’m excited to see how it will continue to tie into the series!

Empress Dowager Cixi was *terrifying* from what we learn in the book, but very savvy! I tried to do the math on the exchange rate but basically, she was raking in the dough every month! And yeah, she made sure that no one upstaged her! I really love Ah-Duo and how she’s shown to be such a strong and vivacious woman! The androgyny with her beauty is probably any bisexual’s dream, haha! That’s really interesting about the pomegranates, though, and their symbolism! Nice! And yesss, Xiaolan can be relied upon to spill the tea for MaoMao, who is NOT someone that seeks gossip! And how she dealt with the honey to spare Lishu was smart, I agree! Gaoshun is both my hero and MaoMao’s worst nightmare! He is like, “Please just tolerate this fool of a man, XiaoMao!” XD Poor Jinshi, though, thinking that he’s so suave! But yes, he trusts MaoMao can “handle” this fool’s antics! Luckily for MaoMao, Gyokuyou is not going to let Jinshi off the hook without giving him a hard time! Lishu showing her expressions makes so much sense with her age and innocence as well! And that she’s grown up in the palace where she’s been “mostly” protected compared to those like MaoMao who know the dangers of the outside world. And yes, what a twist! It definitely left me wanting more intel! But yes, MaoMao definitely is so pragmatic, she is NOT a romantic to say the least! And AHAHAHA - I will say nothing to spoil your assumptions of Haruichi in Daiya! 😛 I feel MaoMao and Jinshi would fit so well into an MXTX novel, though! Also good to know about the Wolfsbane connection; I *thought* that sounded familiar, but didn’t want to make an assumption! And the information about the foster siblings line makes sense as well! So the possibility that Ah-Duo and the Emperor were “nursed” by the same woman is REALLY interesting! Thank you for the comment and Voice Actor information as always! The fact that Qi Rong and Bug Eyes have the same Japanese VA is ASTOUNDING to me, hahaha! I cannot wait for the next episode!

Seriously bitting my tongue about Lishu. The next episode had me going and buying all the light novels.

LoreleiS

This is not a spoiler, please remember we are only seeing a part of the rear place.

LoreleiS

I am so anxious for next episode cause your reaction is going to be wild.

The plot thickens! Just like the honey everyone talked about this episode :P Loved the discussion, and the fun facts! I really enjoy getting to hear more about the book you’re reading, and the fact that you look stuff up like with the aconite syrup. I never get around to do that when I watch stuff in my own. Thanks so much for the video!

Love Empress Dowager Cixi looking to get that cash! 🤣 Can just think of it as compensation from her time spent as a concubine. My pondering mind wondered how much that would be equivalent to in nowadays money. Back then a tael would have equalled around 40g of silver; 1g of silver is roughly CN¥7 today, so one tael would be CN¥280. So Empress Dowager Cixi would have earned CN¥44,800,000 a month. With current exchange rates that roughly works out at £4,776,527 or $6,325,899. Poor Emperor Guangxu really got given a post-humous name declaring him to have been a puppet emperor throughout his reign. The glimpses of Ah-Duo on the wall drinking and riding a horse immediately made me intrigued by her character. Its great that we also get an androgynously beautiful Consort added to the mix 😍🥰 I gotta say I love the use of the pomegranate when Maomao is thinking about how concubines in the Imperial Palace are seen as useless if they can't bear fruit. Pomegranate in some cultures is believed to help in cases of infertility. Pomegranate trees also grow two types of flowers: vase-shaped flowers and bell-shaped flowers. The former are sterile and so won't produce fruit, whilst the latter will. Also Xiaolan spilling all the gossip always makes me smile. She's still in the position of a laundry servant, and in different eras and countries it was common for gossip to be told whilst doing the washing. The stereotypical look of the gossiping washerwomen in my country tend to be more middle-aged women with children at their feet, so it's interesting to see it also reflected here just between two young girls in the midst of a (somewhat stifling) palace. I think the way Maomao dealt with the honey drink was quite sweet. She did her proper routine of tasting, and signalled that it wasn't okay, so as to not put Consort Lishu into the position of either forcing herself to drink something that might be harmful to her, or refusing to drink something served to her by a fellow Consort. I don't believe it was actually poisoned/had anything wrong with it. To me it read more as Maomao giving both Consort Gyokuyou and Consort Lishu an easy way out of any awkwardness over the original drink. With that hair flip, and his sparkles, and then the whole honey scene, it's no wonder Maomao has a certain view of Jinshi 😂 Gaoshun's countenance in that scene is one of my favourite moments of him. He is Zen and at peace. There is nothing going on around him. The sky is incredibly distracting from the nothingness that is occurring in that room 🤣 I do love that they animate Consort Lishu's expressions so well. The other Consorts' expressions are all mostly veiled, but Consort Lishu's face really shows her feelings. I feel it's another great way to show her naivety, and just how young she is. She lacks the experience the others have of hiding their true feelings and opinions behind a mask. I really like the short little glimpse into Gaoshun's mind and his own thoughts on Maomao. It definitely helps make me feel a little more forgiving towards him for leaving Maomao to deal with Jinshi's honey-covered fingers 😂 And you now know that Maomao's Dad once worked as a doctor in the Imperial Palace. Definitely quite a big piece of information to drop on your lap just before the end of the episode. It somewhat changes the usual layout of all the other episodes with leaving you with a flash of the next case, but it's still a jaw-dropping moment that makes you want to learn more about Maomao's Dad and his past. I do think this story is great at giving you these characters and making you focus on a specific one as needed in regards to the storyline, like you mention with the focus being on Consort Lishu during the garden party, but now there being more focus on Consort Ah-Duo. New addition to things I didn't think I'd hear Romania say: "Love isn't just about your genitals" 🤣 But in all seriousness I do agree that Maomao's approach to romantic relationships is very business-minded. She doesn't have her head in the clouds imagining a fairy tale-like romance. For her such relationships are more of a transaction, because feelings don't always last. And I agree that I feel like her upbringing in a brothel would skew her opinion to this, over believing in love and being with one person for an eternity. Romania: Usually the ones that seem really sweet are the ones you have to watch out for in a fictional series My thoughts exactly, hence my continuing to side-eye Haruichi in Daiya 😆 Yes Maomao saying she likes spicy foods made me think of Wei Wuxian too. And she likes to drink too! I think they'd get along so well together. But I'm unsure how Lan Wangji would do with Jinshi's peacock-ness 😆 Aconite honey is made from the nectar of the aconite flower. Like so many poisonous flowers they are quite pretty looking. Unless prepared carefully, like the fish fugu, it can be a deadly poison. More common terms for aconite are wolf's bane or monkshood. So it is commonly used in fantasy series that have werewolves. The term used in Japanese to describe Consort Ah-Duo and the Emperor as foster siblings I believe you can also translate it to milk siblings within the context of this anime. This part of the word 兄弟 (kyoudai) basically translates to siblings, whilst 乳 (chichi) translates to milk or breast. In those days it wouldn't have been uncommon for a prince to be fed by a wetnurse, who usually had her own child still breastfeeding or slowly being weaned. In many cases these children would have been raised closely, and be almost like siblings. I haven't mentioned voice actors in a while and with a couple more new characters introduced I think this episode would be good to mention them. Some others might have already mentioned: The Emperor is voiced by Endou Daichi, and is the voice actor for Bubaigawara Jin from Boku no Hero, Shinkyou's coach (Papa's team) from Kuroko no Basuke, Mikasa's father and Dimo Reeves from Shingeki no Kyojin, and Nikaido's uncle from Tsurune. Consort Lihua is voiced by Ishikawa Yui, and is the voice actor for Sahara from Koe no Katachi, Yukimi from Owari no Seraph, Mikasa from Shingeki no Kyojin, and Violet from Violet Evergarden. Basen is voiced by Tachibana Tatsumaru, who has also voiced Qi Rong in the Japanese dub of Tian Guan Ci Fu, Mimi Mama from Stranger by the Shore, and Bug-Eyes from Vinland Saga. Lihaku is voiced by Akabane Keiji, who is also the seiyuu for Mitamura from Bungou Stray Dogs, and Jin Zixuan in the Japanese dub of Mo Dao Zu Shi. Meimei is voiced by Han Megumi, who also voiced Gon from HunterXHunter, Kurenai from Naruto: Shippuden, and Kurume from Skip and Loafer. Consort Lishu is voiced by Kino Hina, who also voiced Miri from Buddy Daddies. Lishu's lady-in-waiting/food taster is voiced by Shouji Umeka, who is also the seiyuu for Nadia from Banana Fish, Kurihara from Given, Shima's mother from Skip and Loafer, Camilla from Spy x Family, and Michelle Burton from Yuukoku no Moriarty. Consort Ah-Duo is voiced by Kaida Yuuko, and is the voice actor for Sylvia Sherwood from Spy x Family, and Xuan Ji in the Japanese dub of Tian Guan Ci Fu. Fengming is voiced by Hidaka Noriko, who is also the seiyuu for Nate River from Death Note, Tsukumo Yuki from Jujutsu Kaisen, and the Dominator voice from Psycho-Pass.
