BERSERK: Manga Volume 37 Reaction!

*SIRENS BLARING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

We get to the melodic climax of this battle against a literal sea god, as Guts is pushed to his limits, but if anything is to embody how he's no longer alone...this is the battle! Everyone is involved and it's a brawl to the finish!

Meanwhile, we not ONLY get a flashback that offers up some VERY exciting possibilities...but one of my favorite characters is BACK!? Miura...don't...don't mess this up for me, sir!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Ohhhh, okay! I didn't remember that part about her being that type of spirit, so I was confused for a moment! That makes more sense - I didn't connect that her not "moving from her flower" meant she was different than them, since Miura hasn't really explained elf lore much more than what we know from Ivalera and Puck. A lot of it is just audience guess work, haha! That's awesome your husband makes a good Shepard's Pie! There's a restaurant where I went to college at that makes a meannnn one and I was lucky enough to get some when I went back to visit there this summer. And OH, Shepard's PURSE - gotcha - hahaha! That makes sense, too! :P That is good to know! Thanks for the added info there!

I’m basing my ideas on Chitch from what she said. Heck, tbh, I have no idea if she is in the guid book! I opened it up, did a cursory read and slammed it shut! Hahahahahaha! I’m a compleationist as well so I know about having to at least look at it! I was just noticing that she says she is a spirit and she can’t move fare from her flower. That is a lot different than Puck or Ivalera. Shepards pie! Well, that is delicious! Husband makes a very good one in fact. I was talking about the flower, herb, weed, Shepards Purse. I hope it didn’t auto correct to Shepards pie! 😂 that would be a bit confusing! Now, apparently, you can cook with Shepards Purse and make a tea from it, it is also medicinal and will help stop bleeding by coagulation of the blood. Pretty handy!

Guts being the “struggler” is definitely something that has thematically been one of the most consistent and best things about the series! And Griffith as the foil for being the “brains” to challenge Guts’ “brawn.” And of course, yes, Griffith was drawn to Guts because of his resilience and recklessness and that he’d be a “tool” for him but then things of course got complicated - I can’t say if we can say that Griffith “never” struggled before his imprisonment - I guess it would depend on what that struggle would be…but he seemingly did not face the same struggles or to the extent of Guts, at least to me, so I’m with you. But yes, that plan vs. no plan angle during the Golden Age arc was definitely there. Guts has changed a lot since then, and we’ve seen how he’s developed plans in more recent arcs, which marks his growth. But he’s still flawed and makes mistakes, unlike Griffith, who makes sure he’s calculated to the point where he doesn’t suffer any “injuries.” But yes, right there with you with their dynamics being in play throughout the series and how they’re constantly at odds with each others’ characters, like you said, even when not on the page together. Thanks for the comment and pointing all that out! 😀

You are so right about Guts having suffered more than Griffith. First of all Guts is the struggler, according to Skull Knight. Guts has been struggling since his birth, when he was crawling around on the ground covered in blood and guts, and picked up by a gang of bandits to fight and steal for survival. This lifestyle lead Guts to having a rough and abrasive demeanor but also being a hardened fighter. Griffith on the other hand was never a fighter, he was a strategist. His skill was manipulation, and tactic. He was able to get one over on Guts that one time because he took an intellectual advantage while Guts was caught in the heat of the moment. That is strategy. Griffith's lifestyle has made him a formidable leader who can use other people's desires to achieve his goals, a cunning and manipulating strategist. NOW, remember the main reason why Griffith was so fascinated by Guts in the first place was due to his recklessness, as this resilient disregard for physical injury Guts possessed made him a formidable opponent. Griffith saw that he could take advantage of this trait of Guts, which is why he "befriended" Guts in the first place and took him under his "wing" (lol). Griffith never had to struggle before in his life, EVER. And the ONE time he suffered while he was being tortured for that 1 year was enough to break him physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, completely. because at that point was the one time he wasn't prepared, and didn't have a plan. it crushed him. it broke him. Guts on the other hand practically never has a plan, and it's just normal to him. He is a fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants kind of guy and he takes things as they come. He is like the polar opposite of Griffith. He doesn't care if he has a plan or not because he'll just crush whatever is in his way, all while suffering countless injuries. but with Griffith you can barely see a single scratch, because that's how careful he is. I find the dynamic between Guts and Griffith to be fascinating, and even though they barely interact anymore, you can still see the juxtaposition of their characters play out almost in-sync with one another as the story plays, out which i find really remarkable.

Yeah, I was instantly thinking about that comparison with Guts and Chich in the manga as well. And HA! Guts and Nanami could most certainly not be any more different! 😛Love that contrast! I agree, too, at some point - putting all these people in here SOUNDS like a great idea - but I’m going to definitely go into more detail next week about how it’s not a sustainable system at all. But I’m not a godhand, what do I know! ;) Thanks for the comment!

That is a good question with Guts vs. Chich and if “destroying themselves” to help another is foolish or noble. I think it definitely involves a loooooot of factors and isn’t an easy question to answer, haha! But, these are all good questions to ask to us the audience, I agree! Nothing is an “easy” answer in this series. And yes, that all makes sense with Falconia - Griffith/Femto is making his perfect paradise and making it to where no one has any other choice but to stay with him or risk the “horrifying hellscape” outside. And your example isn’t lost on me at all! Haha, thank you for the comment!

No worries - it’s a busy time of year! I honestly have been so happy with this arc and all of the fish fun! Thank you for the video link - I have seen some lantern fish videos and they are indeed TERRIFYING - no need to embellish on the creepy elements! Ahh, honestly, the “completionist” in me would be remiss to not look at the guidebook, even if it was just casually going through it, but I’ll have a poll for y’all to decide if I should look at it before or after Vol 42. And yessss, the “ascension of Christ” comparisons with the mermaids helping Guts are so there! And yes, Guts being the opposite of Griffith - this symbolism is pretty effective! 😀 I’m glad someone else is with me on sharing the Roderick love! Haha! And yes, Schierke doesn’t know about the kid that they had yet…still…I don’t quite believe Schierke either, so all I can do is shrug and keep my magnifying glass handy, haha! I LOVE Spring Flowers; I’m a sucker for a flashback chapter in general, but this one was so well done! And YES, it was crazy as I went back through the series (as I’ll talk about in later videos) and to see how Miura’s art has developed and to see how Guts has grown? WILD. Chitch is definitely cute and the idea of Guts as an “elf magnet” is albeit pretty hilarious! I’m assuming you’re getting this info on her from the Guide Book, which I’ll eventually and hopefully get to, but that’s neat to know! I LOVE Shepard’s Pie, by the way, so fun! I’ve heard of Claymore too, so that’s neat to know they have a reverse Centaur as well! And HAHAHAHA…flipping out is…an understatement with Volume 38. But we shall see! TALLY HO! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Oh man! What a busy weekend! Just now getting to this video reaction! I’m so glad that you loved this volume! So the two new fish depicted in this volume are the viper fish and the lantern fish. I’ve seen flashlight /lantern fish in person and they are fantastic! And very small. https://youtu.be/2y-WluQHFIY?si=dec2xCy9orcBbXjP I’d just skip the guid book. 😅 The panel that shows the mermaids helping Guts to the surface always reminds me of the many depictions of the ascension of Christ. When it comes to Guts, there have always been very subtle visuals that point to Guts being the complete opposite of Griffith. Guts is the Christ like character and Griffith is, well, the devil. I just find it interesting. Well, we finally got some Rodrick bod! I’m with you on this one, we need a full page panel! And we did get a bit more information on the moonlight boy. Although, I don’t know if Schierke is right. I’m with you on this one, baby looks like both Casca and Guts! You also have to remember, Schierke doesn’t know anything about Guts and Casca having a child. Spring Flowers is one of my favorite Berserk flashbacks! It’s so strange to see Guts with two working eyes and so young! This is between his escape at age 11 and him finding the BotH at age 15. I’d say he is about 14 here. A few things, he gets his armor that we see in Golden Age from these people. Chitch! What can I say, she is adorable! I kinda joke that Guts is an elf magnet. Hahahah! Kinda makes you wonder. I think you got the main message from this story. As others have pointed out, Chitch’s sacrifice to heal Guts is very much like Guts’s bloodletting for Casca and the others. She is one of the types of “Guts” characters I was thinking about. I think A mere Almond sums up what’s going on very well. Chitch is a plant spirit, a creature that is a bit different than an elf. She is very similar to an elf but is anchored to her flower. Elves just travel where they want to. They are both beings from the astral world though. So what is her flower? She has a very specific design that reflects the look of her flower with those heart shaped petals. She is a Shepherds Purse spirit! https://www.bbg.org/article/weed_of_the_month_shepherds_purse You probably have some in your yard right now! Yes, it is medicinal. https://youtu.be/xqOJ8qfJcxQ?si=kL2wdNv7T0OYXrDa Irvine the reverse centaur! In the manga Claymore, there is also a depiction of another reverse centaur. Just thought I’d mention that. And we got Richert and Erica back! Yes, he is not drinking the kool aid! Let’s see how this shakes out! And by now, you know! 😎 I can’t wait to get to Volume 38! Tally Ho and let’s ride to ….. well, you know. 😉 can’t wait to see you flip out! Hahahaha! I’m assuming you did! 👁️👁️👁️FEB Spoilers⬇️👁️👁️👁️ Chickens are avian dinosaurs Volume 37: 4!

I second everything you said! 👍

I didn't think of that parallel between Guts and Chich, I was too distracted just thinking about how this is the origin story of why all these little magical beings have a fondness for Guts. Kind of the opposite of animals and Nanami from Utena after a certain cat situation. But you're right, Chich's ordeal really is a micro version of Guts' story so far. Is he going to find a way fulfill his purpose without wasting away? I assume he will but how is the question. I like the house on fire metaphor, except it's not even that he extinguished the fire, Rickert & Erica are now refugees precisely because the rest of the world is still burning so Griffith just got a pretty awesome live-in attic but set the rest of the house on fire, so how long is that going to last? I was about to go in a whole rant about your last paragraph, but my better judgement prevailed so I'll just second you and say: "yep."

Chich plucked all of her leaves to help Guts. Was it foolish or noble? Similarly, Guts is destroying himself to help Casca. So is Guts being a fool like Chich? Is Guts pushing himself too far for Casca? Is Guts plucking all of his "leaves" on this mission? Maybe Chich should have drawn a line where she no longer will pluck any more leaves? Should Guts draw a line somewhere? A line that he will not cross even if it means jeopardizing the mission to heal Casca? So far, it seems like Guts will get consumed by the Berserker armor, just like Skull Knight is warning Guts about. The Falconia paradise has 2 big costs that we are aware of. First off, anyone that dies is sent to hell by Griffith for who knows what reason. Second, the entire rest of the world has been destroyed. Griffith set fire to the house, then extinguished the fire to make himself the hero. Kind of like a billionaire who doesn't pay taxes, barely pays their workers, funds political campaigns, lobbies the government for laws that benefit their taxes and business, and gets lots of money and lives luxuriously. And then to fool the masses, they donate a small percentage and are labeled a "philanthropist".
