I was dreading the aftermath from Utena and Touga's battle last episode, but the last person I expected to be MVP was Wakaba! BEST. GIRL.
This episode took the uncomfortable aftermath, as Utena struggles to find "her normal," and combined it with heart and a glorious lead up to the "final act" as Kiryuu Touga believes...but I think we're just getting started, y'all!

And yes, we do have to be curious as to how “tied” to her “role” Anthy is – we’ll see where the show takes that, won’t we? As well as her trying to gain her independence! I want Anthy to be her own person! But yes, Wakaba is a true friend and I love her! “Sapphics gotta stick together” is such a great tag line for them - I loved Juri in that moment of handing her the sword so much! Thank you for the comment! I can’t wait to see what happens in this show next!

It seems that despite her efforts to remain in her role she actually likes utena quite a lot. enough to daydream about her and hope that she does not suffer during the duel. She tells Touga that she can wait outside while the student council meets, which while it fits with the script of her role is also, Anthy trying to create an oppurtunity to leave touga under the guise of being polite. Its the first time we've really seen her try to fight for any independance without Utena around. It's nice to get a peek behind the curtain and makes Anthy start to feel like more of a person. Wakaba is a true friend looking out for Utena. The little forehead kiss between them is so sweet. Also props to Juri for lending her sword. Sapphics gotta stick together.

Very happy they pushed through the potential "sad arc" I don't think I could take an Evangelion length sad arc! I feel bad - I had my money on Kiryuu for this episode's duel, but Utena did not let Anthy down, I should never have doubted her! Kiryuu cutting off Utena's clothes in the fight seems like such a trashy way to fight, same with kissing the sword, that felt very intentional. Loving the show! Now let's ask ourselves - Kiryuu, husbando dark horse? Maybe - let's test! The categories: Round 1 - Faithfulness / Loyalty: First thing after getting engaged? He cheats on Anthy while asking Anthy's only friend if she'd go out on a date without Anthy in front of her. 0 points. Round 2 - Humility / Humbleness: Flaunts his body at every chance, thinks he's god's gift to women, and can't stand anyone being more important than him - he incinerates his childhood friend's exchange diary the second he gets entrusted with it. 0 points. Tie Breaker Bonus Round - Affinity with Dios: Despite his fiancé's claim "Utena can't possibly win this match" he loses his first duel even after combining the power of Dios with his Sith training. 0 points. It's definitely going to be a long shot for Kiryuu this year!
