BERSERK: Manga Volume 39 Reaction!

*DREAMLIKE HEADHPONE WARNINGS*

We FINALLY have made it to Elf Helm and it seems our crew may get not only a reprieve from the gruesome journey to get there, but Casca is hopefully going to "get her mind back!" But, it's not going to be easy...as Schierke and Farnese discover firsthand!

I feel for Guts having to sit on the sidelines for this one, but as usual, Miura delivers in the art style and the symbolism!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Hahaha, it's not the best handprint makeup but I'm glad it shows up! :D Oohhhhh, I can SO see the "Woodcut Print" detail/comparison! I definitely agree there's a more "cutesy" look/vibe to the designs but for Elfhelm it does make sense and work for the story, so no complaints here! Puck and Ivalera I think get passes for being silly and light-hearted throughout the series because they are elves and it makes sense for their species, especially when we see them all in full force in this volume! It is interesting how he's known about all this information but never said anything...especially when the crew was...actively looking and asking questions, but I'm sure he had his reasons! :P The Brownies are ridiculously cute! And YES! Fraggle Rock comparisons work so well, here! The imagery of Guts pulling the coffin with Casca in it is SO GOOD. Ahhh, I could see the Devilman series using the broken doll imagery, though I've really only seen Devilman Crybaby. And yesss, now they know the truth about Guts and Casca! It's hard to believe it's been THAT long in real time since the Golden Age arc. And as for digesting...yeah...that's currently where I'm at, but we shall see! TALLY HO and thank you for the comment and kind words!

Wow! That handprint looks like it smarted! The art is super clean in this volume. It’s all digital at this point. To me, some of the panels look like wood cut prints, but that is probably just me. In the Fantasia arc, and especially when we get to Elfhelm, all the characters look younger. Cuter? Even Guts gets a slight makeover. It is a bit jarring that the cute is contrasted with the gore of previous volumes. Yeah, Puck doesn’t talk much about his home or who lives there. He is a bit silly in this arc though. Many people do point out that he is almost a different character than he was when we first met him. He is just around for comic relief instead of being a real character like he used to be. I love Puck in all his incarnations, so it’s fine with me that he is a silly head. Throughout the series, he has not talked about his home but only about the people he met in Midland. The first time we even hear him talk about his home is when they meet Schierke. Still, he is short on details even then. I love all the creatures in this volume! Especially the Brownies! So what are they? They are goblins! They love to clean though so can be very helpful. I think they are adorable! Kinda reminds me of characters from Fraggle Rock. We finally get to the corridor of dreams. Guts pulls a coffin with Casca in it. It reminds me of few things I’ve read in the past and a big influence that has permeated the series. Go Nagai, the mangaka who authored Devilman, influences the dream in the visuals of a shattered doll. That is from one of his manga called Susanoou. Farnese and Schierke then get a crash course of who Guts and Casca are through Casca’s memory fragments. I just get a bit misty eyed when reading these chapters. It’s a bittersweet memory for the readers as we relive the Golden Age from soooooo many years ago. Now they know. Well, we are nearing the end of the Miura chapters soon. It is a strange feeling how these chapters play out as you will see. I still haven’t fully digested them. 🤷‍♀️ Tally Ho to volume 40! 👁️👁️👁️FEB Spoilers⬇️👁️👁️👁️ Guts’s drip dry sword…. Volume 39: 0! That’s two 0’s in a row! Elfhelm is very peaceful!
