Romania Black - BERSERK: Manga Guidebook Reaction!

*PUBLISHED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I thought this was just going to be a normal random fan book about the series, but there was a lot of intriguing information, a fun quiz, and also -- one section that is just -- WHAT THE EFF worthy! Miura...you approved this?!

I can't believe we're caught up with Berserk next week! It's been...a journey.

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Romania Black - BERSERK: Manga Guidebook Reaction!

Oohhhh, I am INSTANTLY adding this to my read list! Thank you!!

I just wanted to add another good reading recommendation. Like I said, I love medical history and the book, The Ghost Map by Steven Johnson was a fantastic read for me. It is about the Broad Street Cholera outbreak of 1854. It was fascinating to read about the birth of tracking an epidemic and figuring out how it was transmitted and who was affected. Kinda relevant for our modern times. And yes, you can visit the Broad Street Pump in Soho London! https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/broad-street-cholera-pump just thought I’d share. This is absolutely a tangent and in no way Berserk related! ☺️

Holy cow – I can’t believe 171 flying eyeballs; thank you for tallying all of those! 😛I honestly thought there would be more, too, now that you mention it! Ah, that makes sense about the Falconia comment - thank you for clearing that up! AN APOSTLE THUNDER DOME! Rickert’s not a Mad Max fan, though. Or is he? 😛And yes, I agree 100% that Griffith is gathering everyone there to sacrifice to move onto the next world if needed. Gross. *meme voice* “He can’t keep getting away with it!” I will keep my hopes for Nina, though you provide the obvious answe with that…maybe her and Joachim are chilling somewhere off at sea? We could only wish! Haha! Hahaha, I’m a forever optimist with that, but you have all the realistic answers, there! ^^ BLESS. THANK YOU. That moment of her “catch phrase” just made my skin crawl. How dare they! Yes, the cat WAS cute, but I’m with you - Miura had to have AT LEAST said it was “okay,” which…yikes. I think the saddest part is I am going to be SCOURING for interviews (I’m already collecting what I can) and like you said, the LACK of interviews is really sad, especially for a series this massive. I appreciate you looking out for me and spoilers but yeah, that’s insane about it all being in his head, but I have so many stories just sitting around in MY head, so I also…totally get it. I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about with those kids and the large eyes and I agree! Margaret Keane - YES! It’s “creepy cute” and was a new medium he was learning – I remember watching Big Eye and loving it, so maybe that’s what I was trying to link it to! I’m actually REALLY excited about the Volume 42 reaction, so there’s that! It’s probably one of my favorites, so I can’t wait for you all to see it…you know…despite all that’s going on in it. 😛Anyway, thank you so much for all your kindness and comments on my Berserk journey! And it’s not over yet!

Thank you so much for the comment and the kind words! Also, thank you for the support and following alongside my struggle! I totally understand - patrons never have to tell me when they end their subscription (and you can always check me out on YouTube if that’s the case) – but I really appreciate that information about the EvaGeeks equivalent! Thank you - I didn’t know about that, so that’s good to know! Honestly, with Volume 42, I am fine with Mori’s take so far, but I totally realize I’m viewing it form a logistics/production angle and also as someone that dove into this series a year or so ago, and not someone that’s been reading for a LONG time, so that definitely makes a difference! I really appreciate this info and it’s going to be helpful in my next journey with Berserk (while I wait on Volume 43, bwahaha) – thank you so much for all the luck and support and I hope you’re able to watch and comment on videos in the future if you want and enjoy them! 😀

Thank you for your service counting all 171 eyeballs, I've enjoyed reading your thoughts as well!

Thank you so much for the comment and the kind words - feel free to forward that to Dark Horse for Deluxe Volume 15, hahaha!! It's so true, though!

Thank you! I really do like that translation and quotation! Thanks for the comment!

So, now that we are at the end of the Miura chapters and into the guide book, I tallied up all the flying eyeballs. There are approximately 171 FEBs! Honestly, I thought there would be more. Further clarification on my citizens of Falconia comment. I only had the battle with Ganishka in mind. They did see these apostles transform so they know they are monsters. Do they know about Pandemonium and what goes on there? I’m with you on this one. I don’t think they know. Locus said that even the soldiers stay away from it. He was also behaving like he was showing Rickert a secret thing, an apostle thunder dome! To me, the citizens of Falconia are being set up as sacrifices for Griffith’s next leap forward. (This is based on his past behaviors with doing just that) Oh Nina. I do hope she is alive! You made a good point with “ historical “ vs “fantasy.” She could have met another witch and maybe they gave her a medicine that cured her. Maybe she, despite her maladies, lived her better life with Joachim. Who knows? I’m a medical person so, well, that’s where my brain goes. I see castles and plate armor, I’m going to assume they don’t have a cure for what she has. So here is a bit of history on these possible ailments! ☺️ Syphilis https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3956094/ Tuberculosis: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26653188/. For my job, I actually need proof of not being exposed to TB. I also need a battery of other vaccines to be licensed. (I love medical history) So forgive me for my saying “historically.” Point taken, and long live Nina and Joachim! Now for the guid book. I haven’t read this in years. When I got it, I got to Casca’s catch phrase of,” Aaaauuuuu…” I shut the book and was like, this is a lot of hogwash! I hated that! Why did they do her dirty! This is when I was like, this book is crap. So, I don’t really take what they say about the characters seriously. I wonder who wrote this book? Really I haven’t looked into it too hard. Regardless, Miura must have signed off on it. 🤦‍♀️ really, “Cuties Collection?” I’ll give them that the cat was cute. I had read that interview a while ago, and when I was listening to you read it, bits of it were coming back to me. Other bits were like,” he said that?” Hahahaha! Miura had a reputation for not giving a lot of interviews. Maybe that is why it was a safe interview? We will never know. I was always under the impression that Miura didn’t write the story down but it was in his head. I believe there is an interview with Mori that happened after his death that goes into more of what he has to work with as far as how the rest of the story goes. I’ll try to find that interview. Well, saw some videos on YouTube. I won’t post a link as to not have you click on any Berserk info until Volume 42 has posted. I know you have read it, but still. The digital coloring on the posters, I’m with you! I’m not a fan of them. The eyes are sooooooo large and round. It’s a bit odd. It kinda reminds me of the paintings of large eyed children that haunted my childhood. (In a good way, very nostalgic for me) Margaret Keane is the artist who painted them and I actually like her paintings. To me it’s a mixture of creepy cute. They do have more “life” in their faces than Miura’s depiction of the digital posters. Well, it’s was a new medium he was learning so, I’ll cut him some slack. About the “Big Eye” painting and Margaret Keane: https://youtu.be/OMKnuhNe3Pc?si=pEdE2Lfqyoq_Uk7Y Well, I’ve now read chapter 377 and all caught up! I am awaiting your reaction for Volume 42 as I’m sure there are gallons of spilt tea all over the floor! ☕️ The Mori years will be different. I’m not sure how I feel about it. Thanks for your thoughts and insights into this manga, looking forward to the craziness that is the next volume.

I had never really delved into the Guidebook despite having it for the longest time so this was a great opportunity to read it along with you Romania! It was fun but indeed very safe and sanitized (for obvious reasons I imagine, there's a publisher and public media interest behind it at the end of the day so it doesn't surprise me). Following your Berserk journey has been very insightful so I want to thank you for taking the series on in the first place and struggling through all the pain and BS whilst sharing your experience with it! Regrettably I must end my subscription for a while (I'm in a financially rough patch atm). However, I do want to leave you with something that might be of help with the video you're putting together (which I will look forward to in the future!) Similar to what "Evageeks" is to the Evangelion fandom, there's one for Berserk where you can find an immense amount of information, sources, translated obscure interviews, speculation threads, news, etc. The site is (https://www.skullknight.net/forum/index.php). Perhaps you already know of it, but in the case that you don't, I wanted to bring it to your attention just in case. (This last paragraph might need mod approval just in case Rom still hasn't read vol. 42) I would suggest paying attention to the conversations/discussions in the "Berserk Continuation" sub-thread because the response you'll find in there towards Mori's new chapters is vastly different from the one you'll find in other places I feel. Perhaps it's a consequence of people who have breathed Berserk for a long time vs the casual fans of the internet. I'm myself not a fan of what Mori and Studio Gaga have done with the story and the characters but I won't dive into that out of respect. Anyway, that's what I wanted to share! Wishing you all the best and I'll look forward to future videos Rom, much love! Keep up the good work 💪🏻🔥

Some of the translations are more formal/informal depending on the scans. I'm sure you'll continue re-reading through your deluxe versions, as you should. I do prefer some of the alternate versions, one that sticks out is when Guts is on the cliffs of elf island and says "The hell do I do now" calcium-chan visits and replies “You bear witness to the end of your journey. It is not always a happy thing”.
