The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 16 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Sorry for getting to this comment late! I feel since she was a nurse’s daughter (if I’m remembering correctly) that Ah-Duo might not be noble? But I’m not sure, either. I’m not as familiar with east Asian history, so the book definitely has made me research a few things, which is fun! Still, though, poor Sun Yaoting! I definitely think that the cultural differences could have contributed as well, more than Sun Yaoting was willing to admit, too. I love that MaoMao is like, “Thanks for being here, Basen,” but then ignores and does her thing! Poor Basen! And even when she compares Basen to Gaoshun, it’s almost a backhanded compliment, haha! The family dynamics were really interesting in this episode! I agree with a lot of what you said in that comment paragraph on them in the discussion. And that makes sense about the drawer sizes; thank you for explaining that in this! 😀 Poor Jinshi with Lakan, though - I feel for him! Lakan LOVES to tease and manipulate people to where he’s in a place of control - and for Jinshi, who is not used to that, I’m sure it’s frustrating! I am excited to see what MaoMao has in store for Jinshi! 😛And YES, this series really gets my love of genealogy going hahaha! And add in the element of Sherlock into it, and I’m really on board! And yes, him calling her Apothecary - that’s what she WANTS to be known for, so it’s definitely a complement of high caliber in my book! And ooohh, the VA’s! Interesting! Him playing the rat yokai from Natsume makes me chuckle (with Lakan). Thank you for the comment and kind words and all the voice actor information! I’m soooo ready for the next couple of episodes! ;)

It was said in Episode 10 that Ah-Duo was the current emperor's only concubine at the time she gave birth to her baby, so the baby would have been considered a legitimate heir for the then-prince. I believe the only exception would be if at the time she was brought in as a low-ranking concubine, in which case the baby would be illegitimate. However, considering her ranking prior to her having to leave the Imperial Palace, I do believe Ah-Duo wasn't a low-ranking concubine. I knew that Japan, when it was an empire, absorbed several countries that then became territories of Japan. But I'm not completely au fait with the exact areas the Empire of Japan took control of, though (thanks to historical manhwa and Kdramas) I do know that Korea was under Japanese rule for thirty years. Poor Sun Yaoting. The Manchuko palace definitely doesn't sound the most welcoming or pleasant place to be. I wonder if the rigidness at that palace in comparison to the Forbidden Palace is down to cultural differences, not just between the Manchuko people but also the controlling power of the Japanese at the time. Basen, once again, tells Maomao that she's his follower on this investigation...and Maomao, once again, just wanders around the room she's investigating and does things of her own accord 🤣 But I do love her getting momentarily side-tracked when she figures out who Basen reminds her of. It adds a nice touch to her character that feels so relatable to me. Also gotta laugh that her realisation comes from her being bent down a little and looking further up at Basen seeing as (judging by where Maomao reaches them when standing) I believe Gaoshun is a good bit taller than Basen [approximately, Maomao reaches to the base of Basen's neck, whereas she doesn't even reach Gaoshun's shoulders]. She needed that little bit of height perspective to twig he looks a little like Gaoshun 😂 I feel like the younger son is very reminiscent about the past, whilst the older two (due to feeling like they weren't properly recognised by their father when he was alive) simply wanted to focus on the future. I love though that it ended with them realising they each had areas within the business that they excelled at, and their father knew this. Definitely feel like the three brothers relationship though is one of the more accurate portrayals of siblings in anime, even with the happy ending 😂 The puzzle the father left behind as their inheritance though is such a clever idea. Also physically shows that all three had to work together/co-operate in order to safely gain all the items they were left. Jinshi's heavy sigh and dropping his head on his desk after dealing with Lakan is definitely a relatable reaction. Especially after Lakan teases you with maybe he's gonna talk more about the courtesan, only to suggest you ask someone else. He's definitely an unnerving and frustrating man. What better way to get you intrigued for the next episode than the idea of Jinshi in make-up 🤣 I'm glad you're having a fun time with the potential family trees. I really love how this show explores the idea of family and all the forms it takes, such as the emperor and his concubines in comparison to Maomao's family in the form of the Three Princesses and Luomen. Both are families, but they differ in terms of power dynamics and bonds between all members of the family. Maomao being happy to get out to solve a case really brings Sherlock to mind. In particular I can picture Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock whining in the flat about being bored because of the menial jobs he's only gotten 🤣 For Maomao's comment about the size of the drawers I took to mean for mixing the ores together to create the metal or alloy, the different sizes basically correlate to how much you use of each ore. For example, one part tin to seven parts copper I believe can create bronze (based off of my memory of my brother describing it to me when he was creating different kinds of jewellery through metal casting as a hobby, so amounts may not be correct). Just like in cooking, when creating metals you need a certain ratio of each ore in order for it to bind correctly and produce the required finish. The translation is right for Jinshi calling Maomao "the apothecary girl", but your pointing it out made me realise that I don't think Jinshi has called Maomao by name once. Instead he refers to her as "Kusuriya" or "Apothecary". I kind of like that about him because it does acknowledge her skill as an apothecary and, to me, shows the respect he has for Maomao's abilities in said field. Forgot to mention some seiyuu information for previous episodes: Lakan is voiced by Kirimoto Takuya and also voiced Morello Tierry from Death Note, Torri's uncle from Psycho-Pass, and Isozuki Nezumi from Natsume's Book of Friends. In episode 14, the guy who was looking for Lakan (when he was looking around in the warehouse after the explosion) was voiced by Uchiyama Kouki, who has also voiced Tsukishima from Haikyuu!!, Inumaki from Jujutsu Kaisen, Rei from Buddy Daddies, Benedict from Violet Evergarden, Kirishima from Free!, Shindou from KazeTsuyo, and Yurio from Yuri!!! On Ice. From this episode: Chang's seiyuu (the oldest son) is Shinichiro Kamio, who has also voiced Rukawa from the Slam Dunk movie, and Leonardo Luna from Blue Lock. Tzu's voice actor (the middle son) is Kosuke Goto, but I don't believe you know any of the other roles he's voiced. And the youngest son is voiced by Kobayashi Daiki, and has voiced Sture from Vinland Saga, Hanzawa's younger brother from SasaMiya, and Mitsuba from Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. The mother's seiyuu is Tsunematsu Ayumi, who has also voiced Edamura's mother from Great Pretender, and Rem from Death Note live-action.

Thank you for the comment!

Yesss, y'all bringing all this up! Thank you for the comment and reminder! Still, what a good episode!

Romaniablack

It might just be the program! Sorry for that!

Romaniablack

Oohhh, I have someone else in mind for Moriarty, but hold off on that - Jinshi is definitely Watson or Lestrade for sure! But yes, WHAT CHAOS! Thank you for the comments!

Oh, thanks for the correction! :) ... I am the tinniest bit worried maybe I'm being too gullible, but I'm sure the wonderful mod would never trick anyone, right? Haha. It is a cool insight into MaoMao's mind. So thoughts on this episode for Romania, I agree there's perhaps the biggest suspension of disbelief with the timing around the beam of light perfectly lining up and melting down the tin into a key in seconds, but it's ok. All shows can earn some free passes if they can be great and entertaining, and Apothecary Diaries does that splendidly, and is also semi-educational too! Enjoyed you noticing all the "L" characters in the show (now there's my unintentional shout out!). There really are a lot of them! Can't wait for Jinshi's make-up session, and hopefully MaoMao doesn't charge him for it, I don't trust her anymore unless Suiren is there to check over the bill!

I think it was me not Annie 🥰

Be Happy

No it’s not just you, mine did it too! And then it was ok after a moment

Be Happy

The va for the older brother is Shinichiro Kamio a many of many roles unfortunately I have never seen anything else he’s been in. As for the gray- blue thing think about how Lakan either has gray or blue eys depending on the frame. There is only one thing I want to tell you about Basan… but it might qualify as a spoiler no it’s not about his relations. Yes why is Lakan doing this hmmmnnmn To be honest completely forgot about how long the season is 8 episodes left… that’s two months

Icy

More tomorrow most likely, once I get time to watch the reaction fully... but just wanted to mention the thoughtful point of MaoMao treating relationships transactionally was brought up by Anime Annie, I believe (for episode 10 comments), thanks for the mention either way! :)

L Freya

Lakhan is very much a Mycroft to MaoMao’s Sherlock. Jinishi is totally Watson.

LoreleiS

Jinshi in makeup…. What chaos is this.

LoreleiS

I am not sure if it just me, but the audio is lagging behind the video on the reaction part.
