PAPRIKA: Movie Reaction! PATREON EXCLUSIVE!

Comments

Hahaha, I know there is the camps of how you frame Die Hard, but I make it a Christmas movie, too! And yessss, I'm excited for Tokyo Godfathers, then! :D

Romaniablack

I can definitely see why you love this movie! I am kind of OBSESSED with it! The animation is GORGEOUS and the story is just so intriguing but yesss, I can totally see the theme of escapism in this! Yesss, that final Parade was pure chaos but so many moments of symbolism throughout! And yes, wondering how they do with their own lives versus their dreams and ambition. And yes, the disturbing sexual thoughts of the men with the young women - it’s enough to make you shudder. 🙁 Oohhhhh, that’s so interesting with the bit about the Daruma doll! The idea of the politician promising too many things I could so see! And the idea that the promise wasn’t fulfilled - definitely conversations on politicians and religion in this one as well, but it never feels “preachy” which I like! And to connect to something that so many in Japan can connect with as well. “Parade” is SUCH a good song and carries the entire film - thank you for the link to the song; will definitely be giving it a watch! And as a movie lover, the idea of the dreams as movies works so well – and I cannot WAIT to rewatch this movie! Oohhhh – that’s so sad that Kon was not able to finish that movie at the end - it honestly feels VERY meta in that sense! I definitely cannot wait to take on more of his movies! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

What are you talking about! Die Hard is a Christmas movie! 🤣 yes, I think Tokyo Godfathers would be great for December!

Moominkomet

Yes! I will message you the reaction on here!

Romaniablack

Ohhhhh, the sound of Berserk you say?! That’s so cool! I love that there’s that connection! That’s SO sad he died so young. 🙁 I feel Inception is different *enough* that it’s not a rip off, and is fine, but you can definitely see the inspiration on the screen! I have debated watching Tokyo Godfathers for December because the poster for it seemed…Christmas themed? Like Die Hard is a Christmas movie? 😛So that may happen! But oohhh, Millennium Actress having a Berserk song?! What! That definitely has me intrigued to eventually watch it – thank you for the links and the kind words and comment! 😀

Romaniablack

Have you seen Perfect Blue before? Where can I see the reaction?

Pedro Hernández

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I was obsessed and in love with this movie - it was all of those things you mentioned! I can't wait to get into Kon's other works!!

Romaniablack

Thank you so much! It's now one of my FAVORITES! I just adore it! I can't wait to see more of their movies in the future!

Romaniablack

I can't wait to see their other movies, now, especially because of their style and how good both Perfect Blue and this was! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

All I can say is, Satoshi Kon does it again lmao. Just can't miss

Paprika is a movie that I hold very dear to my heart. It's a beautifully animated piece and the story is interesting. But what really stuck with me on a personal level was the theme of escapism, escaping from reality into a dream. Paprika explores the ideas between reality and subconsciousness and what happens when those start fusing together. It's something that hits very closely due to some of my own experiences. The Villains want to merge reality with dreams so they can permanently escape to their dreams. At the same time, Paprika and other main characters try to stop it, because they understand that a dream must eventually end. The final "parade moment" has many heartbreaking, but interesting moments. (Assumedly overworked) salarymen jump off the roof, some other workers (assumedly some Office workers based on their formal clothes) turn into instruments while saying "The dream I had yesterday and today. The happy and mundane world will vent their anger" maybe they dreamed of being artists instead of whatever they ended up doing with their lives? Schoolgirls with cellphone face saying "It's most valuable while it's still a bud.".... It's horrifying, but unfortunately lot of people think that way, especially with the men with camera faces saying they will preserve that memory of the girls. Then there was a politician with a Daruma doll: "If you're unhappy, please put a vote in this eyeball" which is a bit more complicated to explain if you don't know much about Daruma Dolls, but basically: If someone gets a daruma doll, they decide a goal and the recipient of the doll fills in one eye upon setting the goal, then the other upon fulfilling it. In this way, every time they see the one-eyed Daruma, they recall the goal. I don't know why the politician Daruma doll has four eyes though (maybe he was promising too many things?), but he lacks one of his eyes Still, probably symbolising how he never fulfilled his original promise/ambition. Then there were other politicians trying to fight for the top spot and the one on top, struggling to keep his place. Religious statues saying how they will change religion And in general, that single scene encompasses so many things that both Japan and the rest of the world tend to struggle with from Japan's high suicide rate, mixing religious totems with toys and souvenirs, parents' viewing children increasingly as possible money makers, Japan's issue with Voyeurs and girls being told to "not make issues.", the issue with the homeless population, Japan's issue with Non-functional members of society or Hikkikomori, Japan (But honestly everywhere) issue with so many government officials making half-baked promises and many times never reaching promised goals after so many years in office... and so so so much more. Susumu Hiasaa's song "Parade" aka one of the OST songs in this movie is one of my favourite OST songs of all time. I really recommend checking out the lyrics to it they add only more intrigue and thoughts. If you're interested, you can check the lyrics from https://youtu.be/Mr86_f-kLSQ?si=8HLgns-x4zH0-xR_ (just put them on the YouTube subtitles) I also love how the dreams were portrayed as movies in a way. And the cop's side story was intriguing to follow. How he killed "himself", his past self or how he blames himself for killing his friend, the "other him". Paprika is just one of those movies that gets better with every rewatch. The movie that the cop goes to watch at the end "Dreaming Kids" is a reference to his unfinished movie "Dreaming Machine", but regretfully it was never finished due to Satoshi Kon passing away. He was a talented man and he won't be forgotten for a long time, as the works he created are going to be topics worth discussion for years to come.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Fantastic movie, brilliantly disturbing, chaotically entertaining.

Ah yes! Directed by the great Satoshi Kon! Soundtrack by Susumu Hirasawa, the sound of Berserk! He is associated with Miura and Kon. Satoshi Kon is one of the great directors who unfortunately died before their time to pancreatic cancer. He was 46 when he died. Another director, Darren Aronosfsky, has taken a lot of inspiration from Kon and incorporated whole scenes into his own movies, along with the plot sometimes! Specifically Kon’s Perfect Blue. https://youtu.be/K6BGxikCRT4?si=tAZPcBqdt5rxXCgp. I absolutely adore both directors so, I’m not mad! In this movie, it’s Inception directed by Christopher Nolan. I don’t know how much is inspired and how much is coincidence. Some people don’t like that though and there has been a debate about such homages. Underrated Satoshi Kon movies imho are Tokyo Godfathers and Millennial Actresses. Incidentally, Millennial Actresses has a recycled song from Hirasawa that is from Berserk! I was watching it and I was like, is that the song Murder? !? It was! Yeah, he did that soundtrack as well. https://youtu.be/UKLV3GpToSA?si=9nBKXuXK4l0snm9P The entire song: https://youtu.be/_iqmsSsaZxU?si=aNqVAwQXYIhAUHXq I do love this version
