The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 17 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 *JAUNTING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This episode was 90% charm, humor, and just shipping good fun! I love our diva man Jinshi getting un-"dolled" up to go on a walkabout with MaoMao, as he learns some "street smarts!"

Of course, the last 10% had me gripped to my seat, as we get down to the nitty gritty, and just what Lakan was referring to by "devaluing" someone...

The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 17 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

I definitely feel this was a moment when Sun YaoTing really lost faith in the Emperor and maybe the view that he was “better” than others in his position, which is really sad. It’s definitely a “growing up” and peering through the Oz curtain moment. But yeah, Li Tuyi was really outdoing himself! HAHAHA and the Rock/Paper/Scissors joke is actually really funny! That may be the case! ;) There are definitely times when Huck’s barking (it’s all him, Ruby is normally quiet) is SO loud, I fear the mic picks it up, but then I’m editing and it’s not really even there, so nowadays, I just try to ignore them and they’ll eventually stop. But Tara’s snoring is ADORABLE! Also, I agree, I love MaoMao giving it her all, even if she can’t fully relate! And Suiren showing off her bougie side, haha! Jinshi has no idea how deadly he truly could be! But then again, neither does MaoMao, or at least in Jinshi’s eyes! ;) I love all the little details with his “makeover,” too! And MAOMAO HAVING HER SQQ moment! GIRL! I did want to *gently* shake her as well! Please let Gaoshun and Suirin continue to play matchmaker! I want more of them all interacting together, as well! And yes, for all his appearances, Jinshi can really look young with just a pout! I honestly love how this show depicts the darker elements through simple imagery. It still gets the point across and is powerful - no need for gratuitous excess or exploitation. And seriously, the moment Jinshi asks the question and MaoMao reacts? CHILLS. To her, this is a very serious topic and Jinshi just stepped into dark waters. Ahhhh, okay, that makes more sense with the woman that made Luomen a eunuch. Yes, COMPLICATED is a good word for it! Also, UMIKOCHAN HAS DRAWN JINSHI!? Saints be praised! She’s missing out on not drawing dad!bod Jinshi, though. Also, burger vans sound amazing! XD Thank you for the comment and kind words! SO ready for these next few weeks!

I do love how relatable they are and to see Jinshi get to see MaoMao’s world! I always love the narratives where the privileged part of the couple gets some humble introductions to their partner’s world and yes, I’m all for any episode where they are together, too! “Cozy” is a good word for it, I agree! But yes, THAT look from MaoMao - I wouldn’t want to be on her bad side, either! Maaaaayyyybe, that Jinshi is a private helper is one of the reasons why he’s dressed “different’” - that’s probably connected to it, I’m sure. Oohhhh, and that’s a great point about how the vendor’s don’t directly question her because they think that she’s upper class! Nice catch there! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Yes, I'm glad that Jinshi is starting to take notice of MaoMao and her possible connection with he-who-shall-not-be-named! And yessss, we all have been Basen at some point! <3 Thank you for the comment!

Yesss, I love that about her that she is so oblivious as frustrating as it is! And yes, I feel she isn't trying to stick in her mind on the thoughts of him and being attractive or being a eunuch because she knows it could get her in trouble. It's just trying to figure out the line of "what does she absolutely know" and "what does she not know" and "what is she turning a blind eye" to and I'm excited to see what the show gives us with that - thank you for the comment!

What a fun episode! I think most people probably can relate to MaoMao more than Jinshi - so it's very entertaining to see them trade places slightly, and see Jinshi get a taste of a different world, of MaoMao's world. The saying "Don't judge someone until you've walked in their shoes" almost never fails to make for entertaining media. It really feels like MaoMao and Jinshi are the two characters who move the plot forward the most in this show, so any episode where they spend a lot of time together is automatically a great one! And somehow this episode is also very cute, almost cozy to watch. I agree at the end, MaoMao does not appreciate answering to the question, and what a look! One does not want to get on her bad side, ever! Also - regarding Jinshi's clothes being that of the same style of the Emperor, and no one questioning it... yeah, that's very odd. I don't know if you could pretend that since he's employed directly as the Emperor's own private helper he'd be a special rank, but I don't think so! Kinda stinks they totally messed up there. And one other little detail I enjoyed was seeing is when MaoMao (dressed as upper class) is shopping the street vendor's stalls they don't dare look at her directly, but I don't know if she even notices!

I cannot wait for next week. Jinshi is getting a lot of clues about Maomoa. Basen with the chicken skewers is my spirt animal. We don’t talk about Larkin.

I think Maomao isn't your typical rom-com MC that is oblivious to her feelings. She genuinely knows that Jinshi is attractive and she's got a feeling that he may not be a eunuch. But she just doesn't care as neither of those things make a difference to her.

It is nice of Emperor Puyi to scold the eunuchs for making Sun Yaoting go up to do the window cleaning, but I agree that the food tasting was incredibly wrong. Like Maomao did that job, but they were upfront in telling her that's what her duty was. Emperor Puyi's way of doing it was incredibly sly, and so it's no wonder it broke the trust Sun Yaoting was starting to feel in regards to their relationship. Li Tuyi did well to bag himself both emperor and empress! 😆 "The Eunuch who dispelled the Japanese soldiers with a piece of paper" is quite the title, but if not many of the people living there (if any) were literate then it really would be like being able to stop the Japanese soldiers with paper. Though it did make me think: does that make the Japanese soldiers rock, if paper defeated them? 🤣 I think the same for Tara being loud with her breathing/snoring, but any time I've recorded her I nearly need the mike to be right by her mouth to capture the sound, so I completely get you on thinking Huckleberry and Ruby are loud. Also it's really touch-and-go on what microphones pick up or don't. I love Maomao's ethos of giving 110% even if she doesn't understand why Jinshi wants to look like a commoner. Also I *adore* getting to see a new side of Suirin with her just panicking and being shocked by Maomao's plans to dress Jinshi in such low class items 😆 We got a glimpse of Jinshi a la Helen of Troy with that little bit of lipstick on him 🤣 Empires could crumble with his looks! You did think of Courtesan Jinshi last episode, at least this gives you a bit of a glimpse of how he could look as one. I gotta say though that I do like the detail the anime gives us with the animation of Maomao running her hands through Jinshi's hair and scrunching it, and then the close-up of his hand. Every time Maomao was talking about Jinshi's looks or how attractive he is this episode your reaction just made me think of all the times you want to shake Shen Qingqiu for when he was being completely oblivious about his feelings 🤣 Poor Maomao getting hit with the tag team that is Gaoshun and Suirin. The way they played off of each other made me imagine the night before they concocted such a scheme together to benefit Jinshi 😂 Definitely need more of them interacting together, especially with how much history there appears to be between them from both working to care for Jinshi over the years. Jinshi appears older to me with the make-up Maomao did on him, but that pouty face immediately made him look like a child. Like you said he was happy to be on the date witt Maomao, but Maomao unfortunately didn't get the memo to act like it was a date 😆 The imagery when Maomao was discussing how Verdrigis House works I thought was perfectly subtle. Nothing in your face, even when discussing the less pretty girls basically having to be sex workers from the get-go, but yet again it's just enough to get the point across. This anime really toes the line well of showing things or using other items (mostly flowers) to depict some darker topics without treading into the way of being explicit for the sake of being explicit. The change to Maomao's eyes and the background lighting being duller, alongside the general silence, when she talks about pregnancy heightens how heavy the topic is. Such a contrast to how pretty and soft she looked amongst the hustle and bustle of the lively day-time crowd going through the market. It is a little confusing with all the titles, it was the former emperor's mother who made Luomen a eunuch, not the current empress dowager. The one that ordered it would be the current emperor's grandmother (though we don't know if that's grandmother by blood, or just grandmother because she had the role as empress dowager). Royal family lineage is **complicated** and becomes even more so when you only refer to people by their role or title instead of their names. Definitely agree with the Aladdin comparison for Maomao and Jinshi's little date 😂 Umikochan's art style would be perfect for Jinshi's disguise! I think she's only drawn him once on her patreon, but it was how Jinshi looks normally, not dad!bod Jinshi. Definitely agree that give me those fancy dinners every so often, but sometimes the body just craves something from a burger van (my equivalent to yakitori stalls 😆). All the more so when the smell suddenly drifts and hits you as you're walking by 🤤
