Land of the Lustrous: Episode 1 Reaction!

 *BEJEWELED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I start this series COMPLETELY blind and I am already shipping, speculating, bewildered, and SO intrigued into this "bedazzled" and "bejeweled" fantasy world!

Phos is sweet and all, but my nostalgic heart is instantly drawn to the angsty Cinnabar and the shipping and theorizing is already commencing! This should be a fun series to get wrapped up in!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Land of the Lustrous: Episode 1 Reaction!

Comments

Yeah, this show is really making me realize how much I take pronouns for granted daily, which is a good thing.

Romaniablack

The subs I watched had "they/them' as the pronouns, but I did notice they use pronouns that we usually associate with male, but in Japanese culture it is more ambiguous than we realize. I still sometimes refer to them as she/her even though I know that isn't right. It's just how I perceive them. But will try to correct myself whenever possible

I shouldn’t be surprised you have an affinity for crystals and stones! 😀And yes, I had a friend growing up that was very much into collecting gems and minerals as well. That’s awesome! So I can only imagine this series is up your alley as well! I cannot imagine where this series will go but I’m really excited about it! You saw the Hope Diamond!? That’s so cool! Nice! I’ve always loved mine is Emerald. :3 Yes, some folks on Discord talked about it and that makes much more sense! I had already recorded episode 2 by the time that happened, so I’ll make note for episode 3! And oh wow, thank you for that information on the Inclusions! Hahaha, I’m so ready for all the googling! Thank you for the comment and kind words! And yay for not bad CGI! 😀

Romaniablack

Oohhh, that is really cool to see that connection! Thank you for noting that! And yes, the Master with the Buddhis Monk outfit and the Lunarians and that's interesting to note about the Lotus roots - will make note of that for a future reaction! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

No, not yet! It's been on the polls before, but it's one I'm still awaiting to see! :D

Romaniablack

Thank you for the comment! Someone on the Discord noted the nonbinary/genderless nature of the gems - so I'll talk about that in Episode 3 (since I already had episode 2 recorded). I appreciate it! Thank you for the comment!

I just realized this show and Dororo both have heavy Buddhist influence, just a fun observation since you react to them on the same day. Dororo is easy to see since they mention and worship Buddha as the big religous figure right in episode 1. This show has the Master wearing a Buddhist monk outfit. The Lunarians look a lot like the iconography of significant entities in the Buddhist canon. And their head when cut open look like lotus roots, lotus is a symbol of enlightenment in Buddhism

The gems are explicitly meant to be genderless. IIRC, the author said her approach was to draw their top halves as vaguely male and bottom halves as vaguely female. Many translations use masculine terms because they do use basically male pronouns (boku, kare for I and he) and familiar terms (nii-san, onii-sama, aniki, otouto all for brother). But especially in fiction, the gendering of language is much weaker in Japanese than in English. So basically, conceptually, you'd think we'd be using they/them for them. In terms of how the characters speak in Japanese, he/him would be somewhat more linguistically accurate.

I have been a rock hound my whole life. When I was a kid, my folks used to have a friend that encouraged my love for gems and minerals. I used to have a small collection of rocks I had found and I only just have a few left. It has been augmented by my fossil collection which are still rocks! Hahahaha! So this series is right up my alley! I am on the last chapters of this manga series and I haven’t read it online for like over a year… because I don’t want it to end? I’m also waiting for the last volume to be published… it’s been a while! 😭 It’s funny watching this first episode. That is all I’ll say on that! I’d say these “gems” are nonbinary. I think the “he, his” is more like the translation of it. Think of it as they are rocks basically. If you have a book on gems, dust it off, you will learn so much about them! I absolutely love to see an exhibition of minerals and gems. The best exhibition I have seen was at the Smithsonian. Yes, I saw the Hope Diamond! So my birth gemstone is an Opal! I can’t remember if we have that in this story. But I do have a pair of alexandrite earrings. I love them to pieces. No diamonds though….. Inclusions in minerals are like materials that are trapped in the gem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inclusion_(mineral) Yeah, you will be googling all the gems as well! Wonderful reaction as always! And this is one series where CGI actually works.
