DORORO: Episode 1 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Exactly, suck it, Bezos! You’re not taking my money! But thank you! It’s wild that this is mappa’s Old Logo, but yes, I will also always be salty over YoI….boooo….. Yes, we are thrown into the mix, but I love that, as it helps with the mystery! But yes, the mother breaks my heart - she loved her son and that reveal! It felt VERY Hunchback of Notre Dame to the extreme, with Daigo literally like Frollo in this episode! Oohhh, that’s a great point about the clothing quality with that moment! But the mom – I feel so much for her! And yeah, I cannot with Daigo’s eyebrows, either. Only Kagami can pull those off! And the poor other brother looking like Daigo…yikes. And the midwife being eaten, it’s already getting crazy! And yes, definitely giving Moses vibes…and somewhat Luo Binghe. 😛 The blind man is so good already and I want to see what he can do if he comes back into the story! I love that they have a disability but make it work for them - that’s awesome about the info with the Biwa, too! I also feel like Dororo will be like Puck in Berserk - a MUCH needed breath of fresh air in this series! And the fight choreography was so well done! And yes, allll the questions with how this will work with our swordsman! AND YES, I will talk about this I think later, but no previews is such a good thing! I have since episode 1 checked out the end cards, which are so cool! I agree - maybe adopting a child, but it’s such a hard process, and I feel I’d need a partner to help take care of a baby properly, at least for me. So for now, fur babies it is! And that contrast of the two monks with the temples, interesting! Thank you for the VA information and the kind words and comment! I am LOVING this show so far!

Oh wow! TEZUKA DID DORORO - WAIT A MINUTE! THE TEZUKA!? Same as Unico?! OHHHHHH What a full circle moment this is, especially after my dig into Unico over the summer! Now I’m even MORE invested! Oh my gosh, that intro is an earworm, but also, the moment I saw Hyakkimaru, I could tell it was Tezuka’s style! LOVE! Thank you for that and the info on the Biwa as well! Nice! The sword arms are wild and yes, Edward Elric and Guts is a nice callback to those – hmmm, maybe he just made the trait popular! But more ties to Berserk! Yay! Well, at least THAT is a welcome connection to Berserk, unlike Daigo *sips tea* That is interesting about Dororo and what his name means and the tie to Tezuka’s memory - what a scamp indeed! Thank you for the comment and kind words! I’m really excited for this series!

I would love to see Bocchi the Rock one of these days, but yeah, I can already see why Dororo is replacing Berserk! I'm really enjoying this so far, so it's going to be a fun ride! Thank you for the comment!

Loved your own rendition of Moonlight Densetsu 😂 Also agree with you on the passing for ad-free Amazon...we're already paying for Prime, quite trying to make *more* money off of us Bezos! Those engines made me think I was watching the wrong show at first because the one bit I knew before going into it was that it's meant to be a historical anime not an anime about bikers 🤣 But yeah it's Mappa's old (and really cool) logo. But yeah we won't be salty about Mappa remaking this one instead of Yuri!!! On Ice, even though the latter came three years before this first aired... I love the way we're thrown straight into this world with no background or backstory of these characters. I think it helps make you more on edge for how you feel about characters before learning more about them. And you know it's gonna be a doozy of a first episode when the beginning has a Hall of Hell, talk of famines etc., and a complete loss of faith in the gods 😂 The mother breaks my heart so much. Everyone else is in disgust at the baby, but in her eyes he's her son who she just birthed (likely without pain medication!) 🥺 But I take my hats off to the animators for that reveal. You definitely feel nervous/worried about/for the baby (due to the reactions of the midwives), but the little bundle is squirming in his mother's arms, and it's only after we see Daigo recoil that we get the glimpse of this poor baby who is the victim of his father's scheme 💔 First time I saw Daigo sleeve rip from the mother gripping it so hard, as she begged to not be parted from her child, my first thought was danmei and "cutsleeve" 😂 Then I realised that it's a cool little storytelling point to show that the clothes he was wearing either weren't very fine/high quality, or that they're old enough now that they've lost some integrity in the fabric or stitches. In that respect at least he wasn't decked out in riches whilst the people on his land died from famine and illness. Romania (on first meeting Daigo): I mean, he's handsome in a hardened way... Romania (after Daigo sends the baby away from his mother and tells her to forget him): ASSHOLE! Yup! And, in this case, I feel the latter sentiment negates any kind of physical appeal he might have to some people (for me I just can't with his eyebrows 😂) I was going to say when Dororo won that there's one little part of the Opening that could constitute as a spoiler for Episode 1, minus seeing some characters that appear in the anime. Said part is simply the boy having swords in place of his arms, so I would say the Opening is safe to watch from Episode 2 onwards. For the midwife getting eaten...yeah beginning of Episode 1 does not give you any time to rest and not freak out over what's happening 😆 Baby in a boat with reeds along the river side will never fail to make me think of Moses. At least the baby's journey doesn't involve the crocodiles, hippos, and bigger boats from Dreamwork's Prince of Egypt 😅 The blind man being able to take out the demon like that is so good. It is a pity he couldn't have done that before the midwife got ate, but I'll take what I can 😆 I feel like between him and the baby/sixteen year old boy, this episode does a great job at portraying various physical disabilities, and how they work around said disabilities to still be badass! Also the specific instrument he carries is called a biwa. It's a type of Japanese lute that originates I believe from China. But it is a cool addition to his design to have his sword be part of the instrument. Re-watching with you it almost feels like a hint towards the boy also having hidden swords within his fake arms. Dororo's first appearance is truly so at odds with the vibe of the rest of the episode. You can't help but smile at Dororo trying to sell the ill-begotten wares 😆 Also love that the titular character doesn't show up until so late into the episode, nor get a brief backstory like we see with Daigo's past 😂 But sadly we can't have nice things in this first episode, and the scene of sweet Dororo and the puppy quickly changes to one that makes your blood boil. Seeing those grown ass men hurt the dog and beat Dororo up like that makes me want to throw hands so badly! The choreography of the fight against the demon with the wooden bridge is so good too, and such a great way to show off the sixteen year old boy's skills, and how he doesn't let his impairments hold him back (both from killing the demon, but also in saving Dororo and the random villager kid who almost fell down the hill when walking). I do think the colouring of his skin does make it a little hard to tell what happened, so although it was a bit of slight body horror I like how they showed the mask falling off and how his face looked beneath it, before his skin spread out. Definitely a moment to leave you intrigued and wanting answers/coming up with theories about what exactly happened and why. Just want to point out that a good thing about this series is that there are no previews at the end. Instead each episode has an End Card with a traditional-style ink drawing of something from that specific episode. For this episode it was a drawing of the mud monster/demon that ate the three assholes who hurt Dororo, and threatened to hurt the dog. Yeah considering his mother's looks it is unfortunate Tahomaru took more after Daigo in the looks department 😅 One hundred percent agree on the idea of giving birth. I used to want children, but since getting sick I knew I couldn't manage pregnancy on top of my current issues, nevermind trying to deliver said baby, and then caring for it afterwards. No give me my niece I see every so often and can return to her parents when she doesn't want me, and my four-legged fur baby who has decided to have the Zoomies whilst I'm trying to watch this 🤣 Well done for recognising the priest in the Hall of Hell is wearing a gojogesa, just like Geto from Jujutsu Kaisen! It's a formal ceremonial robe for Buddhist monks. But again, like the contrast with the Hall of Hell and the temple, this priest guarding the demons is draped in such finery when Daigo passed by a monk (who looked to be dead) barely clothed, and you could even see parts of his ribs sticking out he was that starved. Love the Daigo/Frollo comparison. The reaction was definitely like Frollo's with Quasimodo...and both of their immediate reaction was to have the child die. I did not think I'd ever give Frollo a point for planning to drown Quasimodo in the well, but in comparison to Daigo at least he was willing to get his own hands dirty instead of silently passing the baby off to a midwife to "take care of" 🤷‍♀ Japanese name meanings for characters are always fun, especially so if they're on point for certain characteristics of that particular person. With a new series we've got a whole host of new seiyuu. In this episode: Daigo is voiced by Uchida Naoya and has also voiced Light's father from Death Note; Jack Renfield from YuuMori; Dr. Geitel from Monster; and Askeladd from Vinland Saga. The mother's seiyuu is Nakamura Chie and was also the voice actor for Kyouka's mother from Bungo Stray Dogs; Kamo Noritoshi's mother from Jujutsu Kaisen; Sakura from Naruto; and Vera Zaharias from Psycho-Pass. The priest in the Hall of Hell is voiced by Sasaki Yoshihito and has also voiced Kobori from Kuroko no Basuke, Dieter from Shingeki no Kyojin; Kenzou from Chainsaw Man; and Yamanaka Satoshi from Seraph of the End. Jukai is voiced by Ootsuka Akio and is also the voice actor for Fujimoto Raido from March Comes In Like A Lion; The Skull Knight from Berserk; Kyouraku from Bleach; All For One from Boku no Hero; Fukuchi Ouchi from Bungo Stray Dogs; Whitney from Cowboy Bebop; Thorkell from Vinland Saga; Ekubo from Mob Psycho; Kolasch from Monster; Todoroki Tenma from Psycho-Pass; and Rai-Dei from the 1998 Trigun. Dororo is voiced by a female seiyuu, Suzuki Rio, but as you know this doesn't tell you what gender Dororo is considering how many female seiyuu voice both young girls and young boys. She hasn't voiced any other characters you would know. Tahomaru's seiyuu is Chiba Shouya and has also voiced Su Rin from Banana Fish; Imamura from Blue Lock; Sigma from Bungo Stray Dogs; Nouzen Shinei from 86; Tanaka Takeru from Hoshiai no Sora; and Yuuji from Seraph of the End.

Oh man... that 1969 intro is catchier than it has any right to be. Vibe reminds me of the Chika dance from a few years back. I was rooting for Bocchi the Rock for a change of pace, but I can totally see why the Berserk fans would push this one over the edge. Cursed Newborn, Lone warrior fighting demons using prostetic weapons, cute kid joining him in his quest... Bocchi had no chance of wining this one haha. I catched this first episode when it originally came out, and it was a great first episode but I sort of didn't follow up on it for some reason, so it will be great to get back to the rest of the show now.

I love love love Dororo! This story is older than I am! The great Osamu Tezuka started serialization of Dororo in 1967! It ended in 1969 and had a tv anime in 1969! This is the into to the 1969 anime series. No spoilers since you’ve seen this first episode and back then it a pretty basic intro. I do like the song, it’s quite the bop! https://youtu.be/WOGG7ujf5fY?si=MPyd05tdOLs61Kwx. The little dog in this first episode (2019) is an homage to this little dog in the 1969 intro. There are also several live action movies about Dororo. The instrument that the priest has with the sword is called a Biwa. https://youtu.be/_2iqRrBAfEs?si=kUDpWU39FXELxX1B it is very similar to a Chinese instrument called a pipa. https://youtu.be/kTVbd2W126o?si=zljGCpOh8cW8ftp8 I actually like the pipa a little bit better sound wise. Now I don’t know how much you know about Tezuka, I have slowly collected his manga over the years and I do have this manga. I have not read it. All I know is that it’s a bit different. I’ll be reading it soon as it’s been on the bookshelf for many years! Tezuka did study to be a doctor and of course loves robots! Examples of this interest is Black Jack and Astro Boy. I’ll just leave it at that. Yes, the sword arms of our main protagonists are pretty fantastic. Kinda reminds me of all the other characters in anime and manga that have prosthetic weapons…🤔 (Guts, Cobra, Edward Elric, those are just three off the top of my head. Did Tezuka invent this character trait? Maybe? Maybe not! He definitely was a very early adopter or that idea! Oh I’m with you about Lord Daigo! Loved the analysis on him and his meddling in the birth of his son. And the absolute mistreatment of his wife! Well, apparently not much changes…. Cough, cough! Dororo! What an adorable child! So Dororo means “Little Monster “ now the story goes that Tezuka had a memory of a friend pronouncing Dororbo ( thief) as Dororo. So in this story, Dororo is a little monster (thief) what a scamp! 😉 I just absolutely love Dororo! Hahaha, I never thought of looking up the other names! Glad we did that together! Wonderful reaction as always! Love the theories of course. Looking forward to episode 2!
