These first two sets of chapters for RWTW are already a different vibe, tone, and much more intimate in its....relationship dynamics with Haiji and Kakeru, and the other 8 runners of the Chikusei-sou as THIS chapter, Haiji lays out his idea for running the Hakone Ekiden, but the way the team is persuaded is a BIT different than how the anime went down!

Kakeru and Haru definitely have a lot of similarities! I would say there’s maybe sommmme similarities between Makoto and Haiji, though! ;) I do like that the novel lets the events of this series “breathe” a little more visibly and it’s not as fast-paced; it makes it more realistic, I feel. It’s always neat how you notice things taking walks, etc. than when driving by – I wondered if the bins in Japan were hard to find, so that’s interesting to know! Kakeru is so much more soft in this novel! I can definitely see either the spectrum or social anxiety conversation with Kakeru! It’s a very different experience getting to see what Kakeru is thinking of in this novel vs. not getting a lot of internal monologues with him in the anime. But yes, the party moment! He is a precious introvert - I relate to not wanting to be the first to arrive sometimes! Also HOW DARE the show not give us Haiji and Kakeru next to one another; I guess they DID give us other shipper moments, though! Prince is such a hoot in the novel! And Musa and Shindo’s immediate friendship and trust? LOVE. And ooooohhhh yeah, the gambling addiction does add a lot to Kakeru ending up joining in on the gamble, but in a healthy way this time around! I love getting Kakeru’s thoughts in this novel! And seeing how we was more on board with Haiji’s plan from the start than the anime would lead on! Thank you so much for the comment!

2025-02-25 16:59:25 +0000 UTCKakeru's desire for running is exactly like Haru's desire for swimming 🤣 Though Haru gets a brown-haired Labrador man in the form of Makoto, Kakeru gets the oni/demon brown-haired man that is Haiji 😂 Completely understand the novel giving Kakeru a few days to settle whereas the anime almost immediately throws you into them having a welcoming party and getting all the names and faces fired at you at once. I can definitely appreciate the pacing for both and think that each works for their specific medium. I don't jog but I do notice those kinds of things when I take Tara out for her walks. Especially since the storm back at the end of January I've been noticing how many people had fences blow down and which houses have repaired or replaced them. Nira having the poop bag tied to his collar reminds me of the hard time you can have trying to find a bin in a lot of areas in Japan 🤣 The description of Kakeru wanting to be close to Haiji makes me so soft. Poor boy does not know how to make friends 🥺 His relating the idea of conversing with someone to fish does give me the feeling that he could be slightly on the spectrum, or potentially has social anxiety (the latter potentially being worsened by how he was isolated in his previous team both before and after punching their coach). Both would also explain why he immediately becomes derisive of his attempt internally, before Haiji even has a chance to respond or decide how he feels about the question posed to him about running for his health. Kakeru not wanting to show up early to his own party so as to not seem over eager really is adorable. Our precious young introvert 🥺 Awww we missed out on Kakeru and Haiji sitting next to each other during the welcome party?? 😢 In the anime Kakeru and Haiji are kind of on either end of the mismatched tables they had put together; though if I put my shipping goggles on I can refer to them being in those positions as the Mum and Dad of our Aotake group 😂 I do adore that Prince sees it as a brag that he's never run in his entire life 😆 Do love how much we get from the start of Musa and Shindo being together and Musa's absolute trust in Shindo leading to him to want to try for the Ekiden too 🥺 Such an interesting choice of words for Kakeru to tell Haiji that wanting to turn them into a team for the ekiden is a "stupid gamble" given Kakeru's own potential addiction to gambling. It is definitely a nice change from the anime that we're getting it so much from Kakeru's perspective and learning his thoughts. But it's definitely intriguing how he's so willing to let Haiji in and seems a lot more comfortable with him than how he was at this same point in the anime.
