This episode was soooo good! I agree; I still don’t understand all the rules, but still, the game is FASCINATING and I love watching them play and get lost in it! SAME! I love the dynamic that Rei and Souya have! They really tap into this “other world” that I feel Shimada gets close to or has been to before, and I want to see more with them! And this shows Rei’s growth so much!! I love it! But also, the CONFIRMATION WITH SOUYA! YES! How vulnerable he looks and lost, but then Rei helping him! I love that and for Souya to show Rei how he manages to get around. And Ooooh, I hadn’t thought about how Akari would be proud of Rei in the convenience store, but that’s so true! And for Rei to want to help people, of course he strives to make Souya comfortable; I just love them! And ahhh, I agree, I’m obsessed with the dynamic of Souya and Shimada now too - all of them caring for one another! I LOVE IT! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Oh, I agree, I loved everything about this episode. While I continue to not understand much of anything of Shogi *lol* This match between Rei and Souya was thrilling in the most unexpected of ways. Seeing Rei get so lost in it was something I thought I would never see. And, I truly mean that he seemed, Rei did, to have entered the zone; being so deep in concentration and lost to the rest of the world, feeling only the flow of the game. It was mesmerizing. Rei and Souya really are a very interesting pair because, while Rei says Souya is the only opponent he can't know what he's thinking about, they really seem to understand each other on a completely different level and I believe in the end they'll elevate each other's play. You're so right, Season 1 Rei would have gotten so depressed after losing for episodes on end; now, he is... fine. Sure, I'm sure he's sad and frustrated, but he is also discovering all this love he has for Shogi and I think that's quite beautiful. I CAN'T BELIEVE WE HAVE A CONFIRMATION ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON WITH SOUYA! Ugh, that scene tugged at my heart strings. Souya did, indeed, look so young and vulnerable, but he also looked so lost for a moment when Rei woke him up, and that just made my heart quiver for him. While he is obviously very capable and can take care of himself, I'm glad Rei stuck around to handle the social interactions and be his ears, but that Souya also showed Rei all the little tricks to navigate this situation that his age and experience have granted him. The one thought that was running through my head constantly while they were at the convenience store was *"Akari would be proud"*; because I truly believe that Rei buying all this food for one night is thanks to her influence and how much stock she places when relating food and health. While Souya, who doesn't have her in his life, bought lighter things. I mean, aside from the perspective you shared of Souya just being so calm about the whole thing and Rei panic buying XD I agree with you, I've known some people who are born deaf, and they haven't being capable of speech because they have never heard words and thus cannot replicate it, they have no idea how to. Souya being able to speak at will, even if he misreads the context, is a sign to me that he could hear at some point, probably past early childhood, and got comfortable with language and then lost completely or partially his hearing. What is it with Rei and surrounding himself, completely by accident and chance, sure, with people who have some health impediment in the Shogi world? Because, so far, three of his, current, closer friends and mentors are not in perfect health, unfortunately, and that is just... really something. On the other hand, considering how much Rei wants to be of service and likes helping others and taking care of them, this might actually work out amazingly for him. Now, I'm envisioning Akari meeting Souya and him getting the same treatment that Nikaido did. In retrospective, Souya telling Shimada to go ahead and rest, because his gastritis was acting up the day before their match, and that he would take care of everything was really, really kind, and now I'm kind of obsessed with it. P.S. Sorry for the rambling nature of this comment but this episode just has me in awe still.
