DORORO: Episode 2 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*SLITHERING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Our sensory-deprived swordsman, Hyakkimaru, and innocent scamp Dororo have teamed up and are traveling the countryside and wonder into a village needing them to kill a monster! Perfect time for character building and intrigue! But of course, nothing is as it seems on the surface!

This cast of characters already has my heart! Let's talk about this episode!

DORORO: Episode 2 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

I am so excited that the blind man is with them! The drop of that OP, too! YES! I love when imagery makes things “jarring” and does so effectively. And of course, the show decides, “We’re going to be dark, just not how you expect us to be!” T-T And literally putting characters “in the dark,” though the ones they do in this case - minus Dororo - are not ones to be so affected by it. And yesssss, the idea of appearances being deceiving - that’s surely not going to come up in the future when Hyakkimaru (eventually I’m sure) gets his sight back. *nervously sips tea* AHAHAHAHAA – NO DRAWN OUT VILLAINOUS MONOLOGUE. That made me nearly spit my coffee; that’s so true and great. Good point! And yes, the demon designs are quite creepy! That is such a good note about the idea of “fixing” people with a disability - I’ll definitely be bringing your comment up later and will be talking about it as we go. But yes, the one yokai with the bell is just…haunting and eerie. Oooh, thank you for the voice actor information and the kind words and comment! Bandai being voiced by Eva’s VA is SO on point, isn’t it?

That is so wild! I may have to go find the first episode on YT from 1969 and watch it too before the episode I’m about to record! And ahhh, I hear you on binging this season – it’s so easy to want to do! 😀 But yeah, I have a feeling Hyakkimaru is going to keep me on the edge of my seat! Also, BANOFEE PIE! I haven’t had one in ages, but watching them make them, I want one really badly now! 😛Thank you for the kind words and comment!

I knew after Episode 1 you'd be glad about the return of our blind biwa player 😁 The Opening and Ending have both been on my anime playlist since watching Dororo, and I regularly listen to it. Both are such great songs, but I really love the drop with the Opening. Yeah the switch up in the warm ambience with Dororo and Hyakkimaru by the fire to the colder-looking place Jukai is walking through with all the dead...it's a little jarring, but a great reminder of the kind of era they're living in. Also made me all the more interested in how Dororo is able to be such a sweet little scamp with that big grin. Romania: Please let their way of making money not be child trafficking No, but it definitely isn't a kind and legitimate way either 🥺 I loved the introduction of the big headed youkai in contrast with the "pretty looking" chief. Such a great way to show that appearances can be deceiving for those that look with their eyes (i.e. Dororo), whereas those that look deeper and see the 'fire of the soul', like Hyakkimaru and the blind Priest, they see truths that are hidden. Also, I thought of Orochimaru from Naruto upon first seeing Bandai too 🤣 I have to laugh at how matter-of-factly the biwa player brushes off Dororo's concern about being unable to see in the dark 🤣 That little bit from him felt like the kind of depreciative humour I love. It's also a great way to show that the way the villagers have been feeding Lady Bandai is by putting the missing people in the dark, where they can't see and would become more anxious (just like Dororo does). But such a tactic isn't suitable for Hyakkimaru and the Priest because of how they sense evil. The demon designs go hard! The way the skin was on Bandai honestly reminded me of Gremlins 🤣 But yeah they are appropriately creepy looking. Also very reminiscent of how such monsters/creatures were drawn/painted during that era. Hyakkimaru, being unable to hear, also means we don't get the long drawn-out villainous monologuing 🤣 I find that the way Hyakkimaru's disability is portrayed is very different from other disability portrayals in anime because there is the chance for him to become more able-bodied. But like you said this can come with the downside of him being used to living with and fighting with his disabled body, and regaining parts taken by the demons could give him more of a struggle. To me it's a really interesting take on society's concept of "fixing" someone disabled, or the idea that being able-bodied is "better", less of a struggle, and will make a person less vulnerable. The lack of explanation for the youkai, and just having the presence of the large form appearing and ringing that bell is definitely hauntingly creepy. I think it helps you to understand why the villagers were desperate to be rid of the entity, and not just because the continued presence of the bell reminds them of what they did. It's also a great way of engaging the viewer into following Dororo's beliefs that the youkai is the monster that needs to be killed. Definitely very reminiscent of No-Face from Spirited Away. Forgot the Narrator last episode but he's voiced by Mugihito, who is also the seiyuu for Gakuganji from Jujutsu Kaisen, Homura's father from Psycho-Pass, Sverkel from Vinland Saga, and Kaseki from Dr. Stone. The creepy youkai's seiyuu is Kitazawa Riki, and has also voiced King from KazeTsuyo. Bandai's seiyuu is Koyama Mami. She's also voiced Eva Heinemann from Monster and Alberta from Violet Evergarden.

Anime Annie

So I watched the first episode from the 1969 on YouTube. It was very similar to the first episode in this series! Today I’ll crack open the manga and see what the difference is between the anime and the manga. I absolutely love the OP in this series. The animation is a bit of a blend of the modern character design and the Tezuka style. Dororo is depicted as the throwback design in some scenes. Hyakkimaru got his nervous system back. Now he can feel pain, as you point out, may not be a great thing. You gain a sense, you loose others. Loved your reaction and can’t wait for episode 3! This series is very easy to binge! Ps: I need to watch this week’s Great British Baking Show! Hmmm banofee pie…
