The Apothecary Diaries: Episode 19 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Hey! No worries! I totally understand and get behind on seeing comments, too, so you are good! Hope all is well! This episode is SO GOOD! The moment with MaoMao and Jinshi using the medicine to get each other motivated is so hilarious and the levity we NEEDED considering the latter part of the episode! I love the mystery and how all the pieces come together in this one, too. But yes, despite trying to be the methodical, clinical Sherlock, she DOES have a heart and compassion. I wanted Jinshi to movie faster as well but I like your way of justifying it! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I’m SO EXCITED for the rest of this season! Have a great rest of the weekend as well!

Hey Romania! I meant to comment sooner on this episode but my life got a little topsy-turvy. It is one of my favorite episodes of the series and cemented its spot as one of my favorites. I loved the humor early in this episode when Jinshi mentioned the rare medicine and Mao Mao's reaction, and then Jinshi's subsequent reaction to what she does. The humor does not last really long as the episode begins to get serious fairly quickly. I do enjoy a good who done it and I was much like you were watching this episode as Mao Mao piece things together and piecing them together with her. I love how the story gives you enough information that you can try to piece things together yourself but not too much where the connection is too easy and obvious. Mao Mao, despite all she says, is a courageous person with a big heart when "push comes to shove. She shows that clearly in this episode both outside and inside the ceremonial building. As far as how slow he carries Mao Mao at the end, I was wanting him to move faster. The logical side of me after it ended said "Well, she was struck in the head as well" and jostling around someone with a head injury as you would trying to run would be bad. Not to mention, what if you stumbled while hurrying? So as much as we may have wanted to see him hurry as he carried her, he was choosing to carry her with extreme care. From a scene setting standpoint, it did make a very dramatic scene as he walked slowly past Lakin and all the bowing attendants. I will be looking forward to re-watching the final five episodes as you watch them. Have a great week!

So. Many. Emotions! Ahahaha, I love that your daughter is like, “You okay?” I’d be like, “Let me have this!” XD Your shade is seen, it is valid, and I’m 100% with you on it! ;) Gaoshun is going to have to calm Jinshi down after this WHOLE episode for months. Bless him and give him a pay raise! I love how MaoMoa is like, “Okay, moment of unrestrained manic-ness gone. Back to normal.” Meanwhile, Jinshi spirals for WEEKS. But yes, it just shows the BALANCE they have with one another! I love when little moments come together to reveal a big one and this was no exception! THE MYSTERY - we love to see it! And yes, MaoMao puts up the wall of indifference, but she has a huge heart deep down. And yes, MaoMao gets her chilling gaze from her dad, unfortunately. The CINEMA of the second half was just *chef’s kiss* I really love this episode so much! And always feel free to ramble - you all see me with these episodes, right? ;) Thank you so much for the comment and kind words!! I cannot WAIT for the rest of the season!

Also (missed the last paragraph about the cattle) that is interesting! We have veal processed here, but I just can't bring myself to eat baby calves, hahaha! It's weird, but just not my thing! I probably wouldn't be able to tell if a hamburger was from a dairy cow or beef cow, but the steaks, I think are the easiest to tell with! :D

I really felt sad for Sun Yaoting as well! It really is SUCH a beautiful story of these eunuchs coming together to support and be there for one another, especially when they have a life experience that only they can truly understand amongst each other. MaoMao holding Luomen’s teachings sacred is so beautiful! I love it, too! Definitely a nice contrast to how she feels about Lakan. Ahem. And yes, because Jinshi’s involved, she feels it’s only fair to share that. Which, thank GOODNESS she makes that call! Gaoshun DEFINITELY was being a parent in that moment to MaoMao when she was literally about to be on top of Jinshi - he knows how this will mean to Jinshi later hahaha! Yessss, that’s such a crushing blow that it took the “power” of a man she despises to let her go after Jinshi. Oof. I will TAKE Jinshi’s bridal carry of MaoMao, but man it came at a price! I also wanted Jinshi to hurry out of there – maybe you just can’t run in the palace. Also, the magic of the Jinshi tiny bun! Hahaha, maybe his hair is just…fine. 😛 Okay, you’re comment about Jinshi’s exit answers someone else’s comment so that helps! Thank you! And I can’t help but do the Brother/Son bits! Hahaha!! And thank you for the bit about the metal; I’ll have to bring that up in the future! MaoMao and Lihaku’s friendship is so good; I really like where it’s developed as this season as gone on! Thank you so much for the kind words and comment - I am SO excited for the rest of this season!!!

Romaniablack

This episode is soooooo good! I agree; all of those emotions are here! “Primal Medicinal Desires” hahahaha!! Jinshi was NOT READY! This was definitely that gum-stealing scene - I’m not sure about him developing the taste for poison, haha! I don’t want him to steal MaoMao’s thing, and it’s good for her to have a balance to help keep her grounded! ;) I felt for MaoMao this episode and if y’all drink every time I say, “oh my god,” you’ll need a trip to the ER for alcohol poisoning, I’m sure! Unless you’re MaoMao and immune to that sort of thing. XD The tension was great, though! Ooh, I may have to watch more of the dub while I wait for season 2! The mods have been great with this series, so I’m really excited to see what happens with the rest of season 1 and then folks can point out what I missed before we dive into Season 2! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! <3

Romaniablack

Lihaku deserves all the ear scratches and head pats after this episode! ;) Yeah, I cannot imagine trying to write with those sleeves! The animation was lovely for it! Jinshi would so rock a messy bun; I need the fan art now! Hahaha! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Romaniablack

I looooove this episode so much! Lakan’s so hard to read and I love the complexity we’re getting with him as a villain/antagonist! And yes, I think the “gender role swap” they do makes them so much fun to watch and YESSSS, I can SO see the Haruhi x Tamaki comparison! Maybe that’s another reason I love them so much! Jinshi having to put on a stone cold face as he carries MaoMao out, and for MaoMao to be willing to risk her life for a stranger? LOVE. Thank you so much for the kind words and comment!!

Romaniablack

Yeah, that guard has been...."demoted," I'm sure! Gaoshun for SURE needs a pay raise for how Jinshi is going to be following this and Lihaku at least needs some scratches behind the ears! ;) That's very interesting about Lakan; I'll have to note that for a future discussion! Thank you for the comment!!

Excellent episode, with a whole range of emotions going from humor , excitement to thrill and horror!! This episode is maybe the one that made me laugh out loud the most and have had side eyes from my 12 yrs old daughter like : are you doing ok there?? 🤣🤣 Seeing Jinshi overtaken by the green monster of jealousy to the extent he became dark (and contrary to some other ML, yeah he is jealous, and yeah he wants her focus on him but he won’t ask her to not be with others 😏😈 end of my shade 🤣🤣) And seeing MaoMao that is generally soo detached lose completely her sense of composure when face with the possibility of a rare medicine to almost jump on Jinishi’s lap?!! That was HILARIOUS!! Poor Gaoshun having to deal with theirs antics And then .. she regain composure, brush off dust on her skirt and pretended that nothing happened.. but Jinshi wasn’t over it as fast as she did 😂😂 That just shows you how made for each other they are!! The timeline , the way every case MaoMao went in this season come together to reveal a bigger scheme to harm a royal member was awesome 1st killing Master Kounen who was responsible for the tools 2nd poison the other official with seeweed who was also responsible for the tools 3rd the warehouse explosion happen to distract and the culprits could temper with the suspicious tools Finally the metal worker died (I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but i m more thinking it wasn’t) so no new tools are fabricated and as Annie mentioned, the technique to melt the metal used in the epoxy with the 3 brothers is the same used here to make the banner fall !! This is all so mysterious and i m digging it Glad that MaoMao could save the person targeted (unbeknownst to her it was Jinshi) which shows that behind those walls of indifference she deeply care for human life I wanted to beat the shit out of the brute guard, and Man , the look of Lakan there when he said she is hurt, it’s the same as the look on MaoMao when Jinshi mentioned Lakan previously : Chilling . Jinshi’s sad face when he saw that she is hurt, that dramatic descent of the steps with Lakan being on opposite sides, the blood dripping , it was cinematic honestly!! As i told you before this is in my top 2 ep of the shows 💖 God I rambled enough, but ep like these i can’t not share my toughts about them 😁 Loved the theorizing and your reaction was as thrilling to watch as this ep!!

I love lihaku I want only the best things for him! Long sleeves and wet ink is a bad combo. Jingshi looks so elegant pulling back his sleeve the animation is very good. Maomao is adorable! I love the chibis! Poor librarian dude talked back once but hey I’d love his job surrounded by books with few people. No for this part of the opening with Jingshi in his beautiful ceremonial garb. F those soldiers I get they’re doing their job but the brutality was unnecessary. I hope they get reprimanded Imagine Jingshi with a Pinterest messy bun This episode is so good!!! It’s what I’ve been waiting for!

I’ve been so eager for this episode to come up! It’s definitely my favorite of the season! It draws you in right away and keeps you on the edge of your seat for an impressive amount of time. Lakan sure is a mysterious character! His look and demeanor make him seem rather like a mustache twirling villain at first, but then all this happens and it has us questioning all his motives 🧐 I enjoyed your theories on just how involved he really is in all this and what that means for MaoMao and Jinshi Was also intrigued about the gender role swap you pointed out for our main couple here. Switching that up a bit might be part of why we find these two so uniquely compelling. It’s a little bit like Haruhi and Tamaki from OHSHC now that I think about it, lol I also think this shows just how caring MaoMao really is. She acts cool and distant and a lot of the time, but not everyone would be willing to go through what she did to save the life of someone she thought was a stranger to her. Thanks so much for the video!

I really do want to know who got to the guard 1st Goushin on behalf of Jinshi or Larkin. Cause you know the guard was dead the minute he hurt MaoMao. Also. Jinishi will have dreams about MaoMao on his desk starry eyed. Goushin needs a pay raise. Lihaku needs to be told he is a good boy. Also, it is a big deal that Larkin does not cover his face . Jinishi is royalty and you must bow.

What a captivating episode and great reaction/discussion! This episode hits levels of perfection very few others reach for me, it may be my favorite single episode from any show this year! Shock, tenderness, intrigue, love, friendship, heartfelt concern, stubbornness and pride - all the feelings in this episode, yes please! Yes, it's so funny to see Jinshi in terror early on, and soon afterwards MaoMao losing all control to her primal medicinal desires (now there's three words you've probably never seen put together) over the Ox Bezoar, perched up on Jinshi's desk. Jinshi was definitely not being prepared at all! You know how in some shows someone in a blossoming romance will be edgy and push the boundaries by taking candy or gum in a kiss from their love interest's mouth without telling them? That's something poor Jinshi will never get to experience unless pigs fly and he develops a taste for poison haha. I agree in thinking MaoMao mostly didn't know who was in danger in the temple, and oh my god, her poor swollen face and cut leg. Also, we nearly got a drinking game, for the "Oh my god"s this episode! So much tension with MaoMao racing against time to save Jinshi! As you pointed out MaoMao's question to Jinshi "Are you going to give me that?" on the desk and very easily being able to interpret the phrase differently... it reminds me I've been waiting to mention when I was deciding months ago if this show would be a fun watch with my daughter, I got an even worse line interpreted differently - you should revisit episode 4 now - at around 7:15 when Jinshi leans to whisper in MaoMao's ear offering his help by accompanying MaoMao into Concubine Lihua's room - subbed he says "Let's go inside, for now." Dubbed, well you can listen yourself, but taken out of context with that line delivery... it strangely feels even more Jinshi to me now! And the dub is just so wonderful for this show. Rewatching your reactions with the dub playing, this episode's performances are amazing, the English VAs do such a great job. The sound of Jinshi's voice filled with sadness seeing MaoMao in pain at the end, and all the main characters are so perfect. If you ever give the dub a chance in a rewatch I'm sure you'd end up loving it. Enjoying all your theorizing and puzzling everything out! It's so fun to see how much you're enjoying it, all while knowing what happens myself. To see what clues you put together - much sooner than I did! I feel like others are probably going to give you a lot of spoiler-based corrections (which I hope the wonderful mods screen out), so I won't say anything but keep theorizing, I'm loving it! Can't wait for the rest of the season's videos and any more agricultural facts we may have bestowed upon us!

I feel for Sun Yaoting longing for such companionship as his fellow eunuch and palace maid were able to have 🥺 But his job as a consultant sounds like a good chance for him. It definitely is nice to know that the eunuchs created their own little support group, and looked after each other like that. Especially after Emperor Puyi was expelled from the palace. All it takes is our Labrador Lihaku to line up all the events to see how many of the cases Maomao has been involved in are potentially connected. I love though that Maomao holds so dear to the teaching from her Dad that she shouldn't speak on conjecture only. Also Maomao's not one for spreading information or rumours. I do believe if Jinshi hadn't been involved with some of the things Lihaku mentioned, Maomao would have just left it as they were having a private conversation. But because there is some crossover with Jinshi, then she feels it's only right to let him know the potential connection Lihaku has uncovered. I just adore the way Maomao brushes off her skirt and regains her composure; acting like she wasn't just on top of the table and about to climb onto Jinshi's lap in her excitement 😂 But I do have to say Gaoshun's reaction is my favourite part of that whole scene. The chiding "Xiaomao" and grabbing of her clothes feels kinda parental, either for with a kid or a fur baby (both fit Maomao considering her age and cat-like nature 😆) All the talk of Maomao "knowing her place" in regards to the hierarchal structure of their society led to this moment where, as a woman and a mere servant, she has no power to stop things or to even go into certain areas. The cases she's investigated she's done so with Jinshi's power behind her (even throwing him under the bus, like that time she questioned Consort Lishu about the honey and her ladies-in-waiting questioned Maomao's right to question their Lady). And in this scenario, even with her willingness to be physically hurt, it's only by Lakan's words, and power, does Maomao get the chance to enter the Hall and save Jinshi. Jinshi's pained face at seeing the mess Maomao is, physically, it definitely hits hard in the feelings. And yay, my ship gets a bridal carry...but I didn't want it like this 🥺😢 Also with her blood dripping I was kinda silently screaming at my screen for Jinshi to run to get her help, but after-the-fact I can understand that 1) it makes it a bit more romantic, especially with the insert song; and 2) there may be strict rules in the imperial palace regarding running through the palace. I did laugh at you saying the unrealistic part was how Jinshi got all his hair into that tiny bun 🤣 From watching multiple historical Kdramas and Cdramas I can say that it is possible for so much hair to be tightly wrapped into a small bun. But how they manage to do it (both for filming nowadays, but also back in those time periods) I'm definitely putting down to hairstylist magic 😆 The fangirling is real with this episode 🤣 Yeah the screams at the start of your discussion are definitely warranted for this episode. I would like to point out that upon Jinshi exiting the building (with Maomao in his arms) the men gathered for the ceremony outside were shown with their heads bowed and either their arms covering their faces or their eyes closed. As such the only one that may have actually seen Jinshi fully/close-up (and without the mianguan [the Chinese term for the headwear he had on]) was Lakan. The ones gathered by the door quickly lowered their heads as he came out the door so there's a chance they saw him. But with the difference in lighting inside the building where the ceremony took place and outside, there is the possibility that they didn't see him clearly enough to know it was Jinshi. Loved all the brother/son bits with the microphone 🤣 Maomao and Lihaku's friendship is definitely one I didn't see coming with how their first interaction was, but I love it so much. I really like the way Lihaku trusts Maomao's investigative brain now, but also just the general way he interacts with her. Also gotta love how he rules her out as a suspect because of her height...the one time a short stature comes in handy I guess 🤣 The ceremonial tool is the part that caused the banners to fall; there was a close-up of the metal melting and breaking away. It does go by fairly fast so understandable to miss it, but it is the metal that gives way not the wiring snapping. As Maomao worked out, they'd remake the tools that were stolen. But the issue with that is that the case Maomao worked on with Basen to help the three brothers made her aware of a new type of alloy which melted from the heat of the sun reflected through the window and glass fish bowl. With the candles etc. burning during the ceremony, the heat inside that building could be hot enough to melt the new ceremonial tools if they were made with a different alloy from how they were originally created. The librarian said that the pillar is lowered every time they carry out a ceremony, as such the tools used to connect the banner are not permanently fixed there. That's an interesting thing about beef in the US. Here in Northern Ireland we have beef cattle and dairy cattle, with some of the calves from dairy farms being sold to beef farms to fatten. We kill young bulls, steers, and heifers for our beef, though I believe steers make up a bigger percentage of abattoir kills, but I'm not entirely sure on that. A small number of calves are also slaughtered for veal here, and can be from any gender or breed of cow. I'm glad you really enjoyed this episode. It's definitely one of my favourites.
