DORORO: Episode 3 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 *REPENTING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I've wanted to know more about Jukai and his connection to Hyakkimaru since the start of this series, but MAN, I was not ready for the brutality and the humanity of this episode!

We're all human and this episode was both touching and has me so curious about where the roads will take Jukai, Hyakkimaru, and Dororo on their journey!

DORORO: Episode 3 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Yessss, I appreciate that the gore doesn’t quite go to Berserk levels of excess, but also is there for pure illustration and to set the story for us. And yes, I feel so much for Jukai and how he’s trying to live with his guilt and regrets. The suckling of the baby in that scene with him and Hyakkimaru was ADORABLE despite how creepy it was! Yes, Mappa did good on that scene! Hyakkimaru grows a lot in this episode! Yes! I love that small passages of times and how we see that in the entire environment in the show. I love the Pinocchio references in this show! Does that make Dororo Jiminy Cricket? 😛 I really need Jukai to eventually meet Hyakkimaru again, so he can see how much he’s grown and isn’t just “a killer.” That goodbye hug, though? STOP, SHOW. My heart. But yes, Hyakkimaru has his nerves back! I do love the themes of these shows and the way the storytelling has been so far! But yes, it can be subtle and not too preachy, which I love as well. And the characters, even when we don’t get to know them a lot yet, are fleshed out enough and feel more three-dimensional as well. I love the contrast with the two “fathers” in this story so far! That’s also a really nice point about the differences in the births between the two sons! I’ll have to bring that up in the future! And the tree-splitting symbolism is wonderful, too! This show definitely feels like the appropriate replacement for Berserk! And yeah, we think the story is one thing at the start, but oh no….Dororo has more sadness in store for us than that! ;) Thank you for the comment and kind words!

What a way to open Episode 3, huh? 😅 The gore is not there just to be horrific but as a great way to immerse the viewer in what such a time was like to live in (for the rebels, the soldiers, Jukai, and everyday uninvolved people). Definitely an impactful beginning to delving into Jukai's past. With Jukai wanting to create the arm for the little boy and then Kaname can do whatever he pleases with him honestly made me think that it was a great way to show Jukai still has all this unresolved trauma, pain and guilt from his past actions. Just because "Fate" saved him and he didn't die in his previous attempt, doesn't mean a magic wand was waved and his suicidal ideations are gone. To me his work with creating the prosthetics, he's slogging through life trying to find reason for his continued existence when so many lost their lives to his hands. He knows his previous "work" can never be absolved, and that is a hard thing to accept and continue to push through day by day. Definitely agree with you that even though baby Hyakkimaru is high up on the creepy side, the little suckling motion is cute. Hats off to Mappa for being to pull that off so well 😆 I love how we see the progression of Hyakkimaru in this episode. Not just in terms of his own abilities (with living day-to-day but also fighting), but also the improvements Jukai makes on all the prosthesis he makes for Hyakkimaru. It's this things I think are a great reminder that time is passing, but also such a subtle way to show how a child who has a prosthesis fitted will need new ones as they grow. Also, with the Pinocchio reference you made, the better quality/more realistic prosthesis Jukai makes (such as Hyakkimaru's face) is like a slow progression of Hyakkimaru becoming a "real boy" until he gets one of his actual missing limbs back. Jukai questioning his decision on if it was the right thing to do was to teach Hyakkimaru how to fight I think is a great one. One, it shows how he still feels guilt and pain over his past. But two, it also is a bit of a reminder to the audience that Jukai doesn't know what we know: that Hyakkimaru can differentiate between good and evil thanks to his way of "seeing". Hyakkimaru, to Jukai, likely seems like a very emotionless killer in those moments, and he can't be sure that now he's got a taste for blood as it were that Hyakkimaru won't stop at just killing demons. This show isn't just good for giving us the painful emotional moments, but also soft emotional moments like the goodbye between Hyakkimaru and Jukai 🥺 I wanted to wait until there was full confirmation about what Hyakkimaru got back in Episode 2 to mention this. I feel it's safe to say the imagery they used for Hyakkimaru getting his nerves back honestly feels like an accurate portrayal of nerve or touch sensitivity. Especially with how it's all lit up like a fire coursing through Hyakkimaru's body. I knew you'd enjoy the thematic elements of this show! I also enjoy the subtle storytelling aspect of how they depict characters and war. Like you say, war is just a cycle that is difficult to break. It's not preachy or shoving anti-war rhetoric down your throat. It just lays out the bare facts of the causality of war and the causality of kindness and leaves it as a comparison for the viewer to make and understand. The show also does a great job on making the characters three-dimensional, including Daigo, but it's the mirroring effect of showing one character like Daigo and then showing Jukai that really helps you make comparisons about where their choices and lives have taken them. Though there isn't just a contrast mirroring of Jukai and Daigo in this episode, but also a contrast between Daigo's wife after the birth of Hyakkimaru and in this episode how she is after the birth of Tahomaru. With Hyakkimaru, when the land wasn't as well-off, she was sitting up and holding him in her arms. With Tahomaru she's lying down, completely covered, gaze glancing over to the headless totem as she clearly remembers the previous labour she went through. And it's the midwife who hands Tahomaru to Daigo in this instance. The symbolism of that tree being split like that is just perfect! Not just for showing that both sides fighting this meaningless war are human, but also (with all the mirroring done in this episode) showing that both Daigo and Jukai are human but their individual paths and choices have taken them in very different directions. Yes, from what I know of Berserk, this episode definitely highlights how fitting Dororo is to be Berserk's replacement. But yes, Jukai's character choices this episode seem based a lot more on realistic choices than a dire set of choices with no good options for a character to take. Love your AU plotline you created for Jukai in thinking Kaname was a younger Jukai. It also sounds like a very plausible background story. But yeah, no Dororo went with inflicting a little more pain in Jukai's life before he finds and meets Hyakkimaru 🥺

Oohhh, Nice!! Texas Chinese BBQ?! SOLD! :D That sounds so good - thank you so much for this recipe -- I am adding it to my Recipe Keeper! <3

Romaniablack

Ooooo! I love a good BBQ being from Texas! So, here is a rub for Chinese BBQ. It’s from Xinjiang in Western China. It’s a favorite in our household because you can put it on anything! My favorite is on Chicken and any vegetable you can roast! It’s a rub so BBQ as you see fit! Here is the recipe: 5 tsp Cumin seeds 2.5 tsp toasted sesame seeds 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp MSG Grind all ingredients to a powder. For vegetables, add oil to veggies and sprinkle rub generously and roast! For meats, treat as a rub and cook to your preferences. Enjoy!

Thank you! I'm not sure what it is, but I will look forward to going back and reading the whole thing at some point! That's awesome about the turkey! My dad smoked bbq yesterday (none of us are turkey fans) and it was amazing too! Our family is like that too -- leftovers for DAYS, which fits in well with the Delicious in Dungeon life! ;) Thank you so much for the kind words and glad you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, too!

No worries! You can read my comments later. I thought I had avoided spoilers but, I guess the mods thought otherwise. I do want to update one comment I made above, husband made a fantastic turkey and everyone loved it! He brined it and then roasted it by spatchcocking it. It was beautiful! Thanksgiving has officially been taken over by the kids. My mom can just rest and enjoy! I did my mom’s cornbread stuffing and, it was fine, but I think I made way too much! Hahahaha! We will be eating that for quite a while! Hope your turkey day was restful and joyful! Talk about cooking, I can’t wait for Delicious in Dungeon!

Thank you for the comment! And for the link on Naussica! The mods said there were some spoilers so I couldn't read the full comment but I hope to get to a point where I can read it down the road when I've watched more in the series!

This episode makes me cry every time! Loved your analysis of this episode! Oh Jukai! He is one of my favorite characters in this series. His story is very relatable in the context of war. I’m with you on showing battle in anime and manga. To me it’s boring. The manga and anime, “Kingdom” falls into this trap for me. I’m just not into battle. Heck, my favorite war movie doesn’t even focus on the battlefield, but the effects on the people! ( that movie is Das Boot. https://youtu.be/x3HpQejqb0A?si=G_a1LWvIHWL-FbW6 you can cut the tension with a knife!) You know they are fighting, but, you don’t see it, you just see the effects! To me that is more impactful. Small note here: Wolfgang Petersen, the director of Das Boot is also the director of A Never Ending Story! Without Das Boot, we wouldn’t have Falcor! Hahahaha! I think that’s funny. He is one of the truly great directors in our lifetime. I want to point out that the demon Hyakimaru fights to gain his leg back is, the Predator! Nice little Easter egg there! https://youtu.be/Iro7wEJqFsQ?si=BBZpfGdxfPiR4SWX Hyakimaru’s hair growing as he ages is, interesting. Anime has to do certain things because of character design and a visual language to get a point across. That hair is one of those things. So, Tezuka was a doctor of medicine. I don’t think he actually practiced, but he had the knowledge! I checked the manga, and it looks like the hair may be a wig. One moment it’s not there, the next it is. I’m sure we have all learned this in biology at some point, hair, nails, teeth and skin are formed in the ectoderm layer. So realistically, when Hyakimaru got his skin back, his wig should have fallen off revealing hair growing. His nails and teeth should have formed as well, maybe he had dentures crafted by Jukai in which to eat with? Ok, I’m asking a lot, but I think that would have been so cool to see. It’s too much to animate though. Fun fact, because of how dentist restore teeth that have decay in them, it’s very similar to how people get their nails done! 💅 Well, husband is in charge of the turkey this year so I know it will be good! I hope to get some good manga reading in for Dororo on my holiday break, but I doubt it! The whole family is coming over! We are doing a potluck so the burden will be shared! Hope you have a wonderful turkey day with those you cherish and hope you have all your favorite foods! So this dropped this morning as well, it’s about Naussica! https://youtu.be/OIoO6Ho-CZY?si=09TjTPBiekYRfA-P
