Delicious in Dungeon: Episode 1 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

I have never dealt with a food-focused anime, but anime food always looks great, so how can we go wrong?! I love how we’re thrown in the deep end and the world-building just explodes onto the screen (quite literally). And YES, I’m instantly on the Falin and Marcille ship, too! I don’t know how Falin views Marcille at ALL yet, so it’s too early for me to know if it’s one-sided or not…we’ll see what the show gives us. I do find Marcille relatable too and I would be right there with her apprehension in the face of Laios just being instantly down for monster-eating. And hmmmm…well…we may have to see about that Shibari kink, but I have a feeling enemies may have difficulty making Laois crack under pressure. ;) I love Senshi, too! And I cannot unsee Chilchuck as David Tennant, now. It’s the hair and the ears and the dark eyes in coordination with each other! And Laois is so sweet! I love his genuine self on display already; Bokuto vibes FOR SURE! Now we just need an Akaashi for him! *sips tea* I know from enough Great British Baking Show episodes that there was NO way I could make a tart from scratch and it be edible hahaha! I would have to do the ready-made pastry for that, too! Seriously, though, Senshi makes ALL of this look EASY! Thank you for the kind words about the hot pot so far! I have had to make room for the hot pot and shuffle things around! That makes sense about the red miso, though! I wish our grocery stores had a more robust mushroom variety, haha! Also, thank you - my brother is such a troll and definitely likes to give me a hard time because truth be told, he’s a much better cook! And YES, I try my hardest not to oversalt! Marcille is a name I know from some people with it here in the US, but Falin may be one my brain has to adjust to. NAME THAT POKEMON! Laois would love that game! The dark humor does work for me and poor Laois for being kink-shamed! At least Senshi is on board with some of it! ;) Thank you for the comment and kind words! Sorry it took me longer to get to this one, but I’m so excited to hear everyone’s thoughts about the future episodes!

Romaniablack

Ooohhhhh, that is crazy with pig's feed! That sounds so interesting and unique, though! I can't imagine the prep work but will be excited to hear how it turns out and the fact that it's for mother-daughter bonding is so awesome! <3

Romaniablack

Ahhhh, I am already so fond of this show, so I can't wait to see where it takes me...and my mediocre cooking skills! :P ;) Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

That is really neat about the name and I’m down with that theory as well! I’ll probably end up going back and forth between Delicious in Dungeon and Dungeon Meshi because both roll off the tongue so well! Thank you for the comments!

Romaniablack

Oohhhhh, that's such a good observation and I love that! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

You are so welcome!! :D

Romaniablack

Thanks for the recipe !

The name "Dungeon Meshi" can be directly translated as "Dungeon Meal". It is bit of a pun on “-meshi” (yakimeshi, taimeshi, etc) and is localized as ‘dungeonbap’ in korean (bibimbap, gimbap, etc) I think they choose "Delicious in Dungeon" in English because it can be abbreviated to "DnD", refering to the role playing game Dungeon and Dragon

Pancake

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! Yessss, the world building is so fun! And yes, I fully believe SQQ would be ALL IN on these monsters! I love Senshi and Laios's immediate bonding over their passions and loves - it's so cute! Thank you for the compliments as well - I am NOT a cook, so I will have a lot of battles, but they should be fun challenges with this show, haha!! Oooooh, the cracked chicken is so good! This is the link to a very similar recipe - my mom has used sour cream on hers or yogurt. LINK: https://www.restlesschipotle.com/chicken-casserole/ It's so good! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

Glad you may try the hot pot recipe above! Remember, you can use whatever you want to put into it! Talk about soup, I’m in charge of the menudo this year! 😅 In case you are unfamiliar with menudo, I’ll be using pigs feet, two types of tripe, tendon, chilis, and hominy. There is a lot of prep work involved. I hope it comes out well because it’s going to be split between three families! 😭 The pressure is on and my mom is going to be watching me! Well, I’m doing this more for my mom. It’s going to be a mother / daughter bonding day. Can’t wait for it. Yes, I’m putting husband to work prepping! So, I guess you can say, that’s the Mexican version of a hot pot! Kinda of…. Not really! ☺️

Moominkomet

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! Knowing this would come out right after Thanksgiving was a fun stroke of coincidence with the timing! I hope your Thanksgiving was great, too! Laios is SUCH a card already! I really am excited to see what we’re going to get with his character if this is the first episode! But yeah, I’m a bit particular, so I would for sure be like Marcille! And thank you! I really have been enjoying these cooking ventures, even if they do acknowledge how…much of an amateur I am at cooking! And Hahaha, I’ve only see Brian David Gilbert try to rank the Breath of the Wild recipes in a video he did, but I definitely should draw inspiration from him! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Romaniablack

Thank you for the comment and kind words! I've really been looking forward to this series and I'm happy to finally be diving in! Also, yes, Laois is such a character! I love him so far!

Romaniablack

That is so awesome about being Hispanic and married into a Chinese family! That is really neat to know there is overlap and with hot pot as well! And I really appreciate your hot pot recipe! I’m going to save that for my brother and I to try (my parents are not as “adventurous” with cuisine, haha!) – ahhh, I would have to REALLY be adventurous for the Blood Curd, hahaha! But it still sounds like a good recipe! Honestly, as you’ll see in Episode 2, I did not get the lobster right in this hot pot…but at least it was edible and tasted good! 😛 Thank you so much for the information on the Bulls Head BBQ Sauce (will be checking that out) and all the kind words and comment! I’m glad you like the cooking segment!

Romaniablack

Ahhhh, that's so awesome! I'm so excited to dive into this series, thank you!!

Romaniablack

Laios has the most basic design of a human fighter ever but he is the weirdest one of the group. I think that must be intentional

Pancake

Ohhh, I agree; I am so glad that the mangaka made Marcella wear something practical for their dungeon crawling! It could have so been a fan service moment and I'm glad that wasn't the case; and the world building through their natural conversations and what we see in the show? WIN WIN! Thank you so much for the comment!

Romaniablack

Thank you so much for the kind words and the comment and information on the VA’s! I really am loving this show so far and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here!

Romaniablack

I'll keep this short because there's so many great comments posted already, but this series has really grown on me, and I can't wait to watch your journey with it! Loved the discussion and cooking!

L Freya

So excited to see you start this series! I love how it works in the world building, and it goes in some really cool and interesting directions! Both with its plot and the monster designs. It’s very fitting you mention SQQ here because I do think he would like the monsters in this series a lot! I will always be amused by Senshi instantly adopting this group upon seeing them try to cook monsters. As well as Marcille’s persistent, if unfounded, belief that she is the only sane member of this party XD The cooking segment is really cool! I look forward to seeing how it turns out. And that dish you mentioned as a favorite, cracked chicken? That sounds REALLY good and fairly simple to make. Would you mind giving a more exact recipe sometime? I’d love to try it out at home! Thanks so much for the video! I’m looking forward to next week!

Anime mixed with food the part that can go wrong, for me at least, is that it can leave you hungry or craving a specific meal, especially with how good food looks in anime 🤣 Entering into this anime with a king disappearing into dust, a dragon fight, and Laios' sister Falin getting eaten by the dragon...definitely the definition of being thrown in at the deep end 😂 But the start, especially with the animation/art style, gives such a story-telling vibe to properly set the story about to be told. All aboard the Falin and Marcille ship!!! 🥳 They were cemented as my ship the moment I saw Marcille wanting to save Falin because she loves her (she used the term "daisuki" which can mean liking very much, loving (something or someone), adoring, or being very fond of, and is the term most frequently translated to English as "I love you" for the love words/phrases in Japanese). Though, with only having Marcille's words (and blushing face) to go off of I can also accept considering it a one-sided crush rather than a full-blown ship😁 I find Marcille so relatable with her reactions to Laios' love for monsters and eating them 😆 Though her little toddler tantrum when Laios talks about eating the mushroom never fails to make me giggle. Also yes, I reckon Laios and Shen Qingqiu could really get along with their knowledge and love of monsters. Well done for pointing out Laios had a kink before we got to his daydreamy rant about being wrapped in the flower's vines. Definitely gave me the idea he's into shibari (the Japanese rope-tying method to hold a person down) 👀 Senshi with the slime is really like from cooking shows with "And here's one I prepared earlier..." 🤣 I feel like it would be better for Marcille if she just *didn't* ask what each thing is in the hot pot. Would definitely make it harder to be willing to try and eat the stuff, in my opinion. Mind over matter with the idea of eating monsters. I laughed so hard at the Chilchuck/David Tennant comparison! He kinda does 🤣 It is Bump of Chicken at the end! Such an apt group name for this anime 😂 I just knew you'd like Laios as a character. Such a golden Labrador in human form! 🥰 Honestly from this episode he gave me such Bokuto vibes. Like Bokuto is fantastic at volleyball and noticing things (at times), but a lot of the time he can be an idiot or a volleyball baka 😂 In the same way, Laios is an amazing font of knowledge on the dungeon and monsters within but he can be a bit of a monster baka 😂 But yeah like you said certain behaviours of Laios' this episode did make me wonder if he might be neurodivergent but can't definitively say based on this one episode. Hot pot is definitely easier than getting a tart right for someone not too confident in their cooking skills. Though I will say if I'm making a tart I don't make my pastry from scratch and just buy ready-rolled pastry from the grocery store 😅 Just have to lift it out of the fridge 20 minutes before cooking, lay it out flat, and then gently stretch it to fit your flan tray. But you'll have likely seen from Great British Bake Off that it is tricky getting a flan/tart/pie base to cook just right so as it's not overbaked and too dark, or underbaked and too light, or has a soggy bottom 😂 Senshi makes it look way too easy! New series with some slightly tricky names. You got Senshi, Chilchuck and Laios right (I have seen quite a few reactors stumble over the pronunciation of Laios). The Japanese pronunciation of Falin is more like Fah-lyn, and Marcille is pronounced Mar-see-elle, but I have seen multiple reactors pronounce both names in a variety of ways. Dark humour is definitely a big plus for me too! The plant reminding you of the Victory Bell did make me think of the Pokemon segment: Name that Pokemon! 😆 I also love how Chilchuck and Marcille don't look down on Laios...with the exception of when he gets a little too into describing monsters in his fanatic way. Then they do both judge/kink shame him hard 😆 Definitely agree that it's cool how they integrate realistic things (like how the plants are fertilised) within the fantasy setting. As you said natural fertilisers can be kinda gross to think about, but they're one of the best and healthiest resources for growing lush vegetation. We used to use cow dung from my great aunt's farm for fertilising the soil, and giving our flowers and vegetables the nutrients they need. Now she rents out her land to some other relatives who are horse farmers, we use horse manure. But, like Senshi and Laios briefly mentioned it's just the dungeon's ecosystem and not anything to be grossed out by. For the cooking, that hot pot looks awesome! I sadly don't have space for a proper hot pot like that so just have to stick with an ordinary saucepan when making hot pot. White miso is the typical miso to use for soups and stocks, but especially with flavours like chicken, vegetables, and white fish. Red miso is richer and so better off for marinades or paired with red meats. Personally I find portobella mushrooms to have a very similar taste and texture to king oyster mushrooms. I am fortunate that my local grocery store has finally expanded their fresh mushroom options so I can get king oyster, shiitake, and oyster cluster mushrooms alongside the normal British ones (chestnut, and white closed cup button). But if I want shimeji, enoki, or kinoko mushrooms I do have to order them online from a fancy Asian supermarket place based in London. I am an over-cutter too! 🤣 Especially when it comes to hot pot, as usually I'm adding thin strips of beef, and I don't want to have to stand around whilst my harder veggies cook so smaller pieces means less cooking time 🤷‍♀😂 Seemed like your brother was having fun zooming in on your cutting and teasing you over your cooking. But I definitely agree with you Romania on it all going in the same place. Presentation is definitely not in my skillset when it comes to cooking. Yay! Someone after my own heart when it comes to salt 🎉 My family are awful when it comes to salting things. I use salt, soy sauce, or miso sparingly because I'm really not good with salt. Only times I do like a little bit of salt is on a boiled egg; chips from the fish and chip shop; and when boiling carrots. I prefer to use soy sauce if I can to add a salty taste to things, but like you I'll always use the low sodium option. Five tablespoons of miso definitely sounds like a lot to me too. I definitely tweak recipes like that to make them more suitable for my palate too. Looking forward to Episode 2, and to seeing how your hot pot turned out!

Anime Annie

I;m so happy youre watching this. Dungeon meshi is a series that means a lot to me and I've been a fan of the manga for a long time. Laois is such a fun character I love him.

Zachiel

First of all, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, this is kind of the perfect show to get back to isn't it? Laios is indeed something... the fact he already had a well worn monster recipe book makes the loss of his sister more of an excuse than a reason to finally indulge into something he already really wanted to do anyway. In a world where resurrection magic is a thing he's the kind of guy to wonder aloud whether it would work after somebody's been pooped out... do we need to know more about him a this point? I've always been a picky eater, so I empathize with Marcille. Trying to eat things out of your comfort zone is hard. I love the idea of making real life versions of the show's recipes, it's the kind of extra mile thing you don't have to do but it's kind of cool to see, reminds of when people were doing real life versions of Breath of the Wild recepies.

Alex Kornejo

This series is incredible. I have been a huge fan of the author for ages and am very glad she got a great adaptation!

Generation Wumbo

I adore the character design in this. Especially for the Female characters another mangaka would’ve given the mages something very impractical. I adore that Marcella wears pants. When she was hanging upside down I have watched to many anime that use that for fan service. I never noticed she blushed when talking about falin. Oh I the world building they established through conversation and not through exposition dumps.

Icy

Additionally, the english VA for Laios is a youtuber named Damien Haas. It's really weird hearing the voice of someone I normally visually recognize.

Zeekutar The Immortal

So, I’m going to talk about food. I’m Hispanic and married into a Chinese family. It’s surprising how much overlap there is in the cuisine that I grew up with and the cuisine that I learned over the past 25 yrs. Hot pot is something that we do as an extended meal experience with the in-laws or on a smaller scale with just us two. The thing about hot pot is that you almost can’t go wrong with it! The recipe you followed is more Japanese centric and what we usually fix at the moomin home is more Chinese centric. Both are fantastic! It’s not that different really. What we do, since it’s just two of us, we just use a big pot. For the soup, we just use a simple chicken broth. Yeah the sodium is like, really high! Really the soup is there to just cook the ingredients in. What we put in the hot pot: Crown Daisies, or spinach Broccoli Ti-hoah-koe, a blood rice cake. (I love this ingredient a lot!) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ti-hoeh-ko%C3%A9 Any mushroom you like! Thin slices of any cut of meat you like! Rice cake! Pigs blood cake (I know I’m going to loose you here, but it’s really good!) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_blood_curd Jujubes! ( I put those in lots of soups, very sweet and delicious) Qual eggs! And of course tofu. We just get anything we like and cook it in that simple broth. That is usually enough to flavor the broth for later when you can add noodles to it. The way we eat it is when the ingredients are cooked to our preferences, we dip it in a “BBQ “ sauce. It’s very different from western sauces in that it is made with fish. But it tastes sooooooo good! The brand I use is Bulls Head Chinese BBQ in the silver can. You can dip in chili crisp, or make some other dip up, salt, pepper and sesame oil is another nice one (more Korean in style) really, you can add what ever to it. We don’t usually put shrimp in ours because husband doesn’t like shrimp and no lobster either because he loves Leon the Lobster. He is a big fan so lobster is off the menu! 😅 Looking forward to next week when you try your hot pot! Loved your reaction and your cooking! I love that idea! So glad you started this, Dungeon meshi is my favorite anime of 2024 ( and that comes from someone who watch almost all the animes that comes out each season ) it was also one of my best discovery of the year if i count everything i've watch in general, i became obsessed. Adapted by Studio Trigger ( promare from what you've watch ) amazing studio that did amazing works and have always delivered quality mostly with mecha animes but they already did fantasy anime and other genres. For the voice actor : Laios is voiced by Kentarou Kumagai, you didn't heard him in any major roles he mainly did some minor character in Haikyuu and Stranger by the sea from what you've watch Marcille is voiced by Sayaka Senbongi, she did a lot of really cool roles but you did'nt heard her a lot in what you've wach ( Olivia Webster from Violet Evergarden and Nifa from Attack on titans ect. ) Chilchuck is voiced by Asuna Tomari ( Kyo as a kid from Fruit Basket the remake / Shin as a Kid from 86 / Cyclops from 86 ect.) Falin is voiced by Saori Hayami one of the most popular voice actress this last years ( Yor from Spy family / Anju from 86 / Shinoa from Seraph of the end / Shinobu from Demon slayer and a lot of iconic roles that i hope you'll experience someday ) Senshi is voiced by Hiroshi Naka ( Grandpa Ukai from Haikyuu / Haruki Shirogane from Psycho pass ect. ) Opening is sung by one of my favorites japanese group i already talked about in the comments for Sangatsu, Bump of Chicken ( Opening 1 and ending 1 of 3-gatsu / Opening 2 of Spy family ect. ) love there work so much each time. And i think that's all for now !
