DORORO: Episode 4 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Thank you for the comment and voice actor information, as always! 😀The clothes and tiny details the show puts on are really well done! I remember a video talking about the symbolism of hands in Oliver Twist and how they represented social class, etc. and really impacting me, so yes, you can see that here as well! Hyakkimaru’s fighting style really is very raw and he uses his abilities and disabilities in ways to benefit him so much – it’s very engaging to watch! And yes, just fighting to survive! I loved that shot of Dororo running after him, too! But yeah, the realism in that moment is great! Ahh, Tanosuke; I felt so much for him! And the sister’s compassion for him even after all that has happened to him and he’s done. ANd yesss, I wondered about the hair and if she sold it to make a wig; that’s a great point. Thanks for the translation note as well! The mystery of what Hyakkimaru is thinking is also really well done! There’s a care there but also a wild rawness to him – very Guts in a way, from Berserk! Of course his first sounds…dang…definitely a powerful moment, and then you have the cranes…nope. Not misty-eyed, not me! XD Thanks for the information about the cranes as well! That’s a good point about Dororo and the sword as well, and how Tanosuke pushes Osushi away because of her being his sister, but also his own shame at what he’s done - it’s so sad how each of the siblings were trying to hide from each other things about themselves out of shame, when the reality is that neither cared; they just loved each other. Show, why you gotta do that!? Thank you for the comment and kind words! This show pulls no punches!

Definite props to the animators for adding the details of patched-up or roughhewn clothes, and rough hands that know physical work over that of someone who has never worked or works a much less physically-demanding job. I'm not one to believe in the art of palmistry but I do believe that, with enough training, you can learn a lot about a person by the condition of their hands. Dororo is so direct sometimes, and I love that about our little scamp! 🤣 I really enjoy Hyakkimaru's style of fighting, but especially like in this episode where he uses things like his prosthetic leg as an advantage when other people would probably consider it either a liability or a weakness. I think it fits so well with how he was as a baby, and his innate desire to survive. But I also adore Dororo just running after him with his empty arm sheathes. Adds that hint of realism that chucking them off in order to fight with his built-in blades means that either Hyakkimaru needs to go back to where he dropped them, or have a kind person like Dororo retrieve and bring them to him 😆 All it takes is to land wrong to die from a fall, so yeah I agree Tanosuke has nine lives for being able to survive that drop he did! If there's rain those bisexual hydrangeas gotta make an appearance 😂 The execution of the builder is definitely a gory scene. The lord deserved for Tanosuke to kill him. Especially because that sadist wanted to see either the builder or Tanosuke die by such a rusty weapon. Osushi grabbing at her hair when her hair covering comes off really makes me feel for her. In those times (in the West as well as the East) hair was seen as a symbol of status mostly for women but in some countries for men as well. Those that found themselves in dire straits would cut their hair and sell it to wig makers. Also the 'treatment' for some diseases (that were considered "pauper's diseases") involved cutting or shaving the head. With Osushi reaching up to her short hair being revealed to her brother it's like that final piece that really shows what hard times Osushi has fallen on. I also feel like her gesture is one of shame, because she doesn't want Tanosuke to see the physical proof of where she has found herself within society. Translation was wrong just before Dororo passed out. He did say "Thanks, Hyakkimaru" but the second part he said "aniki" which means "big brother" not the translated "Thanks" 🥺 I really do love that Hyakkimaru's thoughts and goals are hard to discern. To me it makes him much more of an intriguing main character, and definitely is a great way of ramping up some tension and worry on what actions he'll take in various situations. But then you get to see him be gentle with holding Dororo, and laying him at a place of relative safety, showing without words that Hyakkimaru cares for Dororo too 🥺 Hyakkimaru's first experience of sound as a hearing person being crying hurts my heart a little. The first sound to be pain, grief, and misery, alongside the thunderous rain, feels like yet another thing Daigo's choice took from Hyakkimaru. As a baby, without Daigo's deal with the demons, upon being born the first sounds he should have heard would likely have been his own cry and then the soft words of affection from his mother 🥺 Also love how the sound in the episode suddenly gets so amplified once Hyakkimaru gets his ears and hearing back, and then for there to be focus on just a single sound within all those sounds, and that's the sound of Osushi crying out her grief. The after-credits showing that Osushi left the two origami cranes almost like offerings at the temple she'd just prayed at for her brother...yeah totally okay with that 😭 Interesting predictions on Hyakkimaru and the woman the Opening keeps teasing you with and what sense he'll get back next 🤐 Right there with you on worrying that Osushi wouldn't survive this episode. Definitely could have gone that way, and there were several death flags raised for her. But I did breathe a sigh of relief that she managed to make it through this episode 😁 Yeah, those hard of hearing or Deaf might not hear like hearing people do, but a good majority of them have their own way of sensing sounds. I also thought Hyakkimaru was just enjoying the sensation of the rain falling on his skin, just like how he tested his nerves out at the end of Episode 3 by stomping his foot in the fire. I also loved the portrayal of Tanosuke as just a human living in difficult times, and showed the separation of man and sword/demon. Dororo not killing anyone whilst holding the sword is very true to 20th Century writing. I feel like Dororo being able to fight against the pull of Nihil, whereas Tanosuke gave into the will of it, may not just show their inner character but it could also be seen as a silent commentary on what pushes people to kill others. As a soldier Tanosuke likely already had blood on his hands before he was given the demon sword. Dororo is a kid in dark times but is unlikely to have spilled blood, or at least not to the same degree as Tanosuke. And Dororo is likely in a better mind frame and more emotional stable than Tanosuke was when he first held Nihiru. The origami cranes could also be a callback to their previous life. Origami cranes typically symbolise longevity and good fortune. Well they did both somewhat have longevity (considering Tanosuke's survival with that cliff, and Osushi finding a way to survive even when she was left alone), but they definitely lost their good fortune considering Osushi's fall from being a noble lady and Tanosuke a samurai, to Osushi being a peddler and Tanosuke a deserter/murderer. Definitely agree, with the way Tanosuke pushes Osushi away, that there could be a little bit of commentary on the effect of war on a soldier. His clinging to the sword felt like him clinging to the connection of war. Also potentially felt like Nihiru "understood" him better and accepted him for who he has become because of all he's faced. Whereas his sister is very much entrenched in their shared past before the fighting and all the death that Tanosuke has seen and contributed to. I know some veterans try to go on with their lives and pretend certain things didn't happen to them (or witnessed), and then there are others that push away any support family tries to give them and focus solely on "the glory days" because that's the only way they can cope and potentially live with themselves over actions they took or faced in such war conditions. Also, makes me question on if Tanosuke was so intent on getting Nihiru back over staying with his sister because he hoped somebody could put an end to his continued suffering. Osushi is voiced by Inoue Marina, who is also the seiyuu for Kouda Kyouka from March Comes In Like A Lion; Momo from Boku no Hero; young Denji from Chainsaw Man; Mai from Jujutsu Kaisen; and Armin from Shingeki no Kyojin.

Yessss, I love when series make the elements and nature their own “character!” Ahhh, and the connection to Berserk! It continues!! That’s super interesting about Daimajin; I will definitely have to add it to my list! Thank you for the link! But yes, I feel a lot of sympathy for not only the brother, but the sister for fighting and believing in him! Thank you! I’m glad that she didn’t have a horrible fate in this episode! And yes, WHAT A GUT PUNCH to gain that sense back only to have the first experience of it be something of suffering! 🙁And to be confused and not understand? Oof. That’s a great point with the videos of those gaining hearing for the first time. Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I’m so excited for what’s yet to come with this show!

The sound of the rain is almost its own character. I love the sound of rain. Sometimes I will just open up the windows to let the sound in, and the air, and all the water. 😅 even though there is dialogue in this episode, the ubiquitous (Ubik - that is what his name means- Berserk) rain sound drowns it out and minimizes it. As you pointed out, there are elements of 1960s storytelling. One of my favorite movies (a trilogy) that feels a lot like episodes of Dororo is Daimajin (1966). https://youtu.be/HII2E4F3axw?si=2GXYU3ZLHa_t5dKp I highly recommend throwing this series on a probably huge pile of stuff that you MUST watch! 😂 The brother is such a tragic character! Your analysis is spot on. I have great sympathy for these characters, the sister and brother. A bittersweet end, the sister is reunited with her damaged brother only to loose him again to his own demons. To have Hyakimaru gain his hearing back only to have the first sound he hears is crying. What a gut punch! To gain a sense and discover the sound of suffering in this world. Sometimes I watch those videos of deaf people hearing for the first time. It’s usually a very joyful experience. It may be confusing as well. Those videos, people are usually surrounded by loved ones. Hyakimaru’s experience is so different. Now he can be fully immersed in all of Dororo’s yakking. Thanks for the reaction and well, looking forward to next week!
