 *SETTING UP HEARTBREAK HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Hyakkimaru gains his hearing back, but his struggles have only begun. As he strains to hear properly, he meets a beautiful soul, Mio, who is trying to make ends meet for a group of orphans she's taken in...as civil war is on the brink of breaking out beside them all.

Ohhhh, no no no -- I do NOT like where this is headed.
Next week is going to be ROUGH.

DORORO: Episode 5 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Oh yeah, the Instant OP is a baaaad sign of pain to come! Well, unless it’s like Apothecary Diaries where it always starts with the opening. But I will agree, the sound design is so good with this series and getting you immersed! I love how they don’t just “say” it but you can almost feel like Hyakkimaru does in this! And yes, I will definitely be talking about the “Aniki” note in a future episode! 😀But I appreciate you mentioning it here! I do love the maturity of Dororo throughout this - it definitely elevates him from the thieving little scamp he was at the start! And that moment of him lowering his voice is such a sweet consideration! And well to know that Biwa-maru is a bit more forceful! I like your reasoning throughout this comment! And yeahhh, so here we are with the story of Hyakkimaru and Mio – I don’t get “great” vibes considering it’s ONLY episode 5. T-T And also introducing the children, too? NOT GOOD VIBES! Mio’s singing is SO gorgeous, though! And Hyakkimaru INSTANTLY soft around her! *big eyes* So many red flags! And yeah, the connection to the Apothecary Diaries is there, but it’s definitely closer to Berserk and darker than AD. I definitely feel for Mio, especially with how innocent Hyakkimaru is and how ashamed she feels. I never thought I’d want a KNB crossover with DORORO of all series, but sure, why not?! And yes, Biwa-maru is definitely needed to help keep Hyakkimaru from going too far! And yeah, DREAD FOR EPISODE 6. T-T I’m glad you see the Bambi reference! And it’s totally okay about the Seiyuu for Dororo – I was overthinking it! Mannn, that is wild with the VA’s in this series! I love the stacked cast we have! And yeah, I thought of Daisuke from Millionaire Detective as well when thinking of Hyakkimaru’s VA, but it is kind of cool to have someone with NO VA experience literally voicing a character that…hasn’t spoken before! ;) Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Never get good feelings when an anime immediately starts with the Opening 🤣 We're almost conditioned now to think of that, which I think did make me a little nervous for each episode of Apothecary Diaries that starts with the Opening 😅 I massively applaud the sound team for this episode with how they manage to make the viewer fully understand just how overwhelming all those sounds would be 🥺 Growing up as someone with hearing you do learn to tune out certain sounds and focus on others, but too many sounds at differing volumes can be hard to tune out or focus on just one sole sound. For someone who's hearing impaired or Deaf and they're able to hear noises (whether by their body being able to process sound on its own or through a mechanical device) it can be far too much input to properly process. I mentioned in my comment for Episode 4 but it's following through to this episode, that the subtitles are wrong. Dororo now refers to Hyakkimaru as "aniki" or "big brother", not by his name or saying "Hey" as the subtitles show. To me that is quite the choice of translation change to make because Dororo now calling Hyakkimaru his big brother shows how close they've become, and is a subtle way to show the progression of time from Dororo first meeting Hyakkimaru. Dororo's immediate understanding to Hyakkimaru flinching away from the sound of his voice just makes me love our little scamp so much more, even more so when he *immediately* lowered his voice and spoke softer as well as using his hands to block some of the sound escaping. It is a sweet gesture. Though quite opposite to our biwa player's response 😂 Biwa-maru takes the somewhat more forceful method of trying to get Hyakkimaru used to sounds, when Dororo's is more of a gentle approach for Hyakkimaru to slowly get used to and understand them. I can understand both schools of thought and it's hard to say which one is the better choice for Hyakkimaru. As you've mentioned, the return of his senses could be a hindrance to him, and so in that regard (because Hyakkimaru isn't willing to be patient when there's a nearby demon to kill) the bulldozer method of Biwa-maru's might be better. But the softer method would be better in the long term I think. The bow though is ridiculously cute whilst also effective for muffling sound 🥺 You have been wanting to see the story between Hyakkimaru and Mio...😁 The shocking way they introduce the kids by first showing their heads, like cute kids peeking in at the new people, and then showing the injuries they've sustained because of all the fighting surrounding them is such an effective way of hammering home the true cost of war, and the incessant fighting of these times. Tahomaru would definitely benefit from meeting Murasakibara 🤣 Just a couple of plucks and then he wouldn't be as unfortunate-looking like his Dad 😆 They made an amazing choice in seiyuu for Mio for singing so softly and sweetly, but also her having a more gentle voice than all the other voices surrounding Hyakkimaru. And Hyakkimaru's softer expression when looking at Mio both made me feel so happy but also filled me with dread because there are definitely a few red flags popping up this episode 🥺🥰 They're definitely a bit more visual in showing Mio's work than how Apothecary Diaries deals with similar subject matter, but I feel it's very similar in how they don't show it for titillation or just for the sake of including something more sexual. This tragic part of history is a sad fact that many women found themselves having to do such work with samurai who took everything else in their lives from them. Like with Apothecary Diaries the truth of it is just laid bare for the viewer to see, and then better understand certain actions Mio took throughout the episode. Like what exactly she was washing away in the river, why she may have had a bit of a stumbling gait, and why she covered herself more [twice] when she felt like Hyakkimaru was able to see her and then when Dororo commented on ghouls' souls likely looking gross. It makes you feel so much more sympathy for Mio and her internal feelings of shame, when all she's doing is trying to survive (and look after all those orphans) in such a brutal world 🥺😭 It is really heart-breaking considering how innocent Hyakkimaru is in comparison to the samurai. And this is why it's good to have Biwa-maru with them because Hyakkimaru is far too reckless when fighting demons. So yeah, every time you mentioned when you thought he'd get his voice back this was the moment I kept thinking of 😬😢 Yeah with how this episode ends it definitely leaves a feeling of dread that something bad is going to happen in Episode 6 😬 Definitely feels like pre-stress to what might be to come. I can definitely see the Bambi comparison with the way the forest scene is, and with all the wildlife noises. I'm the same as you on needing some noise in the background. When I was at school I even made separate playlists for each subject I was studying, which then helped me to revise and retain information for each individual subject without getting them mixed up. Yeah my comment for Dororo's seiyuu being female was just because in Episode 1 you weren't too sure on if Dororo was a boy or a girl and I was worried it might be a spoiler to not put that even with a female seiyuu it doesn't mean much for Dororo's gender, and so wanted you to decide his gender first. Intriguing predictions on what's to come for Hyakkimaru and Mio 🤔🤐 Yes with Mizuki Nana and Nakamura Chie we get both seiyuu for Sakura and Hinata in this 🥰 Takebo is voiced by Terasaki Yuka, and is the seiyuu for Kuramoto Misaki from Free!; Teramoto Rika from Garden of Words; young Itachi from Naruto; Robby's Wife from Pluto; and Mika from Skip to Loafer. And yeah, it's really interesting that they chose someone who hasn't done voice acting before to be the seiyuu for Hyakkimaru. Reminds me a lot of them choosing Oonuki Yuusuke to voice Daisuke from Fugou Keiji/Millionaire Detective.
