HAIKYUU: The Dumpster Battle! Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction & Discussion!

 *MANGA READING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Ohhh, there is a lot to like about this Haikyuu movie I've been waiting to see, but also (as a manga reader) a LOT to talk about in terms of what works and doesn't work for me!

At least the movie WAS very enjoyable, even if I have some strong-worded critiques! I hope you enjoy my rambles!

HAIKYUU: The Dumpster Battle! Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction & Discussion!

Comments

I totally understand someone enjoying the POV Kenma scene - I think if I hadn’t LOVED the way the manga did that scene, then I would have enjoyed it as well. I get “why” they did it, it’s just sad when you were anticipating and looking forward to a scene adapted a certain way and then it’s not. I don’t mind the pacing of the gameplay, but I did miss the vibe of Haikyuu, the slowed down and celebration of those moments, which this movie didn’t have as much time to do. I think it’s totally fine if folks enjoyed the movie, it just felt sad to me because I knew what was cut and left out and was disappointed in not getting to see those scenes animated, especially after waiting so long. We could have had a 4 hour long movie…if they’d made a season of the anime with this. ;) But yeah, the next film…there’s no way they can fit ALL of the rest of the series in one 1 hour and 30 minute film. But a four hour flick with an intermission? GIVE ME IT. And YES! I DEMAND an OVA of Fukurodani’s game! It’s so perfect! We’re going to need a prayer circle for the final parts of the series, but I’ll try to stay hopeful! Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and for the support and kindness in your comment!

Murase is sooooo good! I cannot believe he and I are the same age - WILD! I also love Yuuki Kaji gets to relax…somewhat…as Kenma! 😛I just need Haiji to basically be in ALL sports anime - he’d fit in so well! Bokuto is our star and we love him! And any time that Daishou gets to be on screen is a good day for me, too! I love that he’s just basically adopted Tsukishima against his will, haha! All I can say is one of my disappointments is that Yamaguchi IS in the game longer in the manga and the moment with him and Tsuki is EVEN better in the manga, hence one of my disappointments and why I wasn’t as emotional in the movie. The Ukai moments between the grandfather and grandson and Nekoma’s coach and Old Man Ukai are so powerful in the manga - I love it! I agree that I don’t think Nekoma would have won against Inarizaki, but Haikyuu has a lot of “what if” scenarios, so honestly, it would probably be closer than I think. Sweet Lev! I do love our giant cat! And yes, I ship him and Yaku so much! Honestly, all of Karasuno with Hinata’s hair – we’re lucky Tsuki didn’t see that, or he would have fainted! 😀 This movie was DIRTY for the foreshadowing it really highlights for the manga readers! I agree, if I were anime only, I wouldn’t have even noticed, but knowing what’s to come? *shudders* I DO appreciate the pace feeling like a volleyball match, but it just doesn’t match the vibe of Haikyuu and its “heart” for me, overally. It felt very rushed to me, and I wanted them to let those moments sink in more. And the Yachi part with Bokuto and Akaashi was a commentary feature in the manga…here, it’s just a small moment. The OST of this movie was gorgeous, though! I really enjoyed it! Yuuki Kaji definitely got to bring in his AOT chops to the DRAMA of Kenma “trappin” Hinata and Karasuno! I love when Kenma gets scary, though! It’s so fun! And Kenma’s panting with the OSt works really well! But again, that is one of my biggest misses with the movie - the manga handles that last scene SO. MUCH. BETTER. In my opinion with seeing Kenma’s expression - it’s way less anti-climactic, to me, in the manga than it is in the movie. One thing I did love was the flashbacks with Kuroo and Kenma - they are PRECIOUS - and it’s a “do not separate” pair (though they may let Tsuki or Hinata join in, hahahaha)! The flashbacks were probably my favorite parts of the movie! :3 AIZEN’S VA IS KENMA’S DAD!? HHAAHAHAHAA - that’s actually perfection! “All According to Plan!” I agree with Kenma and Hinata just being platonic besties! I do love how far our boys have come! This was definitely a game among “family” with Nekoma vs. Karasuno and it just felt fun and like a celebration! And ugh, yeah, I love the two coach “handshake” scene but the movie did it dirty for me, but I won’t rant more about that, haha! Honestly, the prospect of them ONLY doing one more movie is TERRIFYING to me. I’m not sure I even want to think about it, haha!! The animation was fine in this, not bad at all, but it wasn’t…movie quality to justify it being more than a quick cash grab to me. I hadn’t even thought about the subtitles in the cinema! Oh wow! I definitely want to support Furudate all I can, but I’m not sure I want to support the studios that are blatantly being lazy with Furudate’s material. So wait for the stream – if it’s good – I shall! Hahaha!! I agree 100% that this movie needed to have just manga and new material - if you’re going to a Haikyuu movie, chances are you’ve watched the show! It just took up time that cut from parts of the manga that I was so disappointed were left out, which just fueled my rage, haha! You doing the math on that scene makes me slowly grind my teeth, hahahaha!!! I would LOVE a Fukurodani OVA - it DESERVES it for that manga content! I’m STILL baffled that they’re just like, “Okay done,” with a series that is AS POPULAR as Haikyuu! To me, it’s just that they want quick profit and then move on, rather than invest in a popular IP. Anywayyyy, YES! Atsumu and Sakusa is my crack ship of Haikyuu and I’ve read so many fan fics of them, I had to remind myself! 😛I wanted to say Kiyoomi, but my brain was blanking! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I am glad to finally at least be able to review more Haikyuu content!

Oohhh yeah, I'm definitely biased as a manga reader for this series! And yes, "That's not Haikyuu!" Exactly!! I do agree that it's an adrenaline spike for SURE and it's fast paced and a fun ride, but I was looking forward for some parts and having it just...not there, definitely made me sad! It's a "fun quick watch," but I don't know if I would come back to it over and over again because it's missing that "heart" that is Haikyuu for me! Thank you for the comment and kind words! I wish Animation Studios would care more and if we keep being vocal, eventually they might be; who knows! Thank you again! I appreciate the support!

I actually like this movie and I really really enjoyed Kenma's POV scene. Manga is from Shouyou's perspective and the movie is told from Kenma's perspective and it makes an interesting contrast. It's bold of them to creat the another version for the film from the source material and I can take it. As you said, Nekoma match is the celebration of their growth and youth, so the fast speed seemed representing how their spring time of life is fruitful and fleeting. Volleyball is fast pacing sports. It's not like baseball. Basketball, ping-pong, soccer, and handball are all intensive and quick. The dilemma of sports anime is on that. Commenting on a game, explanation, telling their back story, strategy, and feelings are so important for sports anime, but sometimes it kills the momentum of the game, especially playing such quick sports. For example, I like old slam dunk anime but it actually chopped the speed of basketball with comments and explanations. And Takehiko Inoue gradually shifted to express momentum without telling much. In Japanese sports manga history, there is another stream that telling a story with lingering sentiment by using blank space and background arts. For me, this movie seems to try to express those feelings and Furudate also shifted to describing beauties and fun of volleyball without direct explanations. I did cry at the movie theater. I don't think they gave up telling feelings of characters. Though I understand your points. However, because they have drawn the character developments and feelings closely and piled up those episodes carefully, now they can pulled out feelings without telling much. Once the popularity of volleyball among Japan was so dominate, but the time HQ was started was the plateau period of Japanese men volleyball team. Furudate introduced this sports step by step with taking time. But nowadays people came back or entered to volleyball with his dedication of love of this game. Japanese team regained the strength and attentions. People got to know how fast and impactful volleyball is. So it's time to draw in the the speed and beauties. And I rather want to immerse. On the other hand, I totally agree with you about next film! I NEED 4 hours long movie!!! PLEASE! Let's take a break time during a movie like Bollywood or European artistic film industry. And I ALSO REQUIRE OVA of Fukuroudani's game. But I like the idea of packing Kamomedai game where Shouyou learned his failure, Brazil training arc to grow up, and the final he swung back into one piece. So please feed me a long total package! I'd love to watch the finale with banners of each highschool. It's another sample of one viewer. I enjoy your reaction and discussion. Thank you for watching this movie. And let's make a prayers' circle for next movie!

Well, this was a lot of food for thought, for sure. As an anime only, I felt the rushing pace of the match, and that was saddened for me because that's not Haikyuu. And there were moments that definitely made me scratch my head because they felt out of nowhere, and apparently were missing all their context. I mean, I have long being spoiled about the ending and what's left of the manga, by choice *chuckles* and I knew about some moments that I was looking forward to actually seeing and not just knowing about that never made their appearance, precisely like Kuroo and Kenma first meeting. Don't get me wrong, the movie is very good at making you feel that adrenaline spike with how fast-paced everything is, and it's a fun quick watch, but something that absolutely doesn't hold under scrutiny or over time. I appreciated your thoughts over it all because, yeah, I think you're right about it all. And I wish we could make animation studies care more for their products, but, alas, we can't. It definitely feels like they got bored with making Haikyuu, saw how much longer they would need to continue, and just decided to be over with it as fast as possible without caring about the quality of it in the least.

I adore Murase Ayumu (Hinata's voice actor) too, but I still find it nuts to think in four days he's gonna be 36! Yes, Kaji Yuuki is Kenma's voice actor. Definitely one of his characters that really helps show off his acting chops. And yes Nakamura Yuuichi, Gojo's seiyuu, is the voice actor for Kuroo 😁 Oh my god, Haiji and Hinata meeting is a crossover I need to happen! You know I adore when Bokuto is shown 😁 But I also like that we've got Daishou and his girlfriend Mika, as well as the captains for the other three teams from the Fukurodani Group training camps there to give commentary seeing as they've been there since almost the beginning 🥰 I just adore Taketora physically dragging Kenma into the group huddle 🤣 Grandpa Ukai's pride in Coach Ukai did make me tear up a little 🥺 I agree that Nekoma could have struggled against Inarizaki. Whilst Nekoma have such a great defence, Inarizaki have a lot of hard hitters that might make it hard for Nekoma to ever be able to get the ball up to begin with. I don't think that Inarizaki would win straight sets, but I do think they'd win overall. The co-parenting of Tsukishima by Kuroo and Bokuto (and Akaashi) is one of my favourite parts from the Fukurodani Group training camp 😆 I full-on teared up in the cinema at Tsukishima's pride, trust, and belief in Yamaguchi 🥺 And him really trying to block so that Yamaguchi can stay in longer...I love them so much. But then I didn't get to have a more emotional reaction because we didn't get more. Kuroo just disrespecting Lev a little with just accepting Lev didn't win against Kageyama at the net. But I laugh so hard at everyone's shock at Kenma actually moving fast 😂 Kenma imagining all of Karasuno with Hinata's hair, and seeing Bokuto and Kuroo with each other's hairstyle from the Fukurodani Group training camp are two of my favourite comedic moments from this movie. And both moments really highlight a friendship: Kenma's with Hinata, and Kuroo and Bokuto (alongside the latter being the type of parentals to tease their poor children, Tsukishima and Hinata) 🤣 That "health" comment and some other little bits definitely make you tense so much as a manga reader. Anime only's just took that for face value 😅 The pace for this movie did feel more similar to how an actual volleyball match is, but it definitely takes away the feel you get from a sports anime. Certain moments definitely feel like they are rushing through to mark off that they touched on this part of the manga. I do love that they had Bokuto turning to Akaashi to make sure his piece of "sage advice" to Yachi was actually the right way to use such a phrase...oh my beloved himbo 😂 Green hoodie kid in Grandpa Ukai's hospital room definitely looks like the lovechild of Hinata and Oikawa 😆 I do love the OST playing whilst Kenma is analysing and talking about their plan of attack against Hinata. Felt a little villainous whilst also quite techno like a computer analysing data. And I love the fizzling when Hinata was getting all up inside his own head. It's a fantastic way of showing someone losing themself to their thoughts. That moment of Kenma muttering away about Hinata being able to hit a set that high makes me completely understand why Taketora said Kenma reminded him of Sadako (from The Ring) with his completely dark hair 🤣 Kuroo choosing Tsukishima of all people to question what's up with Hinata was not a good choice for Nekoma's captain 😆 I am glad they at least gave us some of the flashback moments showing us baby Kuroo and Kenma 🥺 Not just because they're cutie pies and it helps fill out their backstory, but also for shipping reasons 😆 They are definitely a pair that you do not separate in my book. I loved getting to see the moment of Kuroo really feeling good about spiking, and Kenma getting intrigued by the idea of being a setter. Yes! When they played a clip of that moment of Kuroo speaking to Kenma's Dad in the trailer a lot of people thought it was Koyasu Takehito being the one to voice him. It's actually Hayami Show who is Aizen's voice actor (so still one of BeHappy's DILFs 😆) That moment of Lev and Yaku is definitely one of my favourite shipping moments for them 🥰 Also great way to just show their dynamic. It is emotional seeing how far all our boys from Karasuno and Nekoma have come. Especially comparing them each with their similar counterpart on the other team 🥺 But it especially made me happy seeing Tsukishima and Kuroo's long journey in such a short period of time. And completely agree: give us more Tsukishima smiles! I get the Hinata and Kenma ship too, but I think I'm too much of a KuroKen shipper to ship Kenma with anyone else. Definitely love the platonic friendship between him and Hinata though. And Kenma saying it was fun, that was the winning moment for Hinata 🥺🥰 We already talked a little about the first person point of view, but I really do adore how Kenma's desperate panting grows louder than the music, only for it to calm a little and then get faster as he becomes more desperate as the play goes on 🥰 I do think it's effective in showing how desperate Kenma is in that moment, and how much he really does want to win. But I agree that I wish we'd gotten to see Kenma's expressions. I will say winning by default because of the sweat making the ball slip does feel a little anti-climatic, though at the same time I can understand it is another way of showing just how hard Kenma was working in comparison to how he sets in other games. Yeah I started tearing up with Kuroo in the cinema when Kenma thanked him 🥺🥲 I like Hinata's response to Yaku being his usual nervous way around older players, because usually those players are a lot taller than him. It shows that it's not the height of his opponent that Hinata finds imposing 🥰 I do love that the end has them all intermingling like they did. At the end of most games the two teams tend to keep very separate. It really hits home that this game was different from the others. Though Grandpa Ukai reaching out to shake Coach Nekomata's hand also made me almost tear up in the cinema, but I think some of that was just down to the manga moments. That moment was a culmination of so many years of their life, and so much of our Karasuno boys' story so far. But there wasn't enough done in the movie to make it properly hit. The ending definitely left me in the cinema feeling the same as you ("Is that it?"), and then the true fear set in for what the second movie is going to be like 😭 I did tear up several times but there was never a moment I ended up full on crying. Like there are a couple of moments that even on re-watches I will have streams of tears running down my cheeks for the previous seasons. Because there wasn't time for it to sink in before more things were happening all I got on a few occasions was a prick of tears or my eyes going misty before that was gone because we'd moved on to the next thing on their checklist. I definitely agree with you that the quality of the animation was disappointing from a movie standpoint, and I did watch it in the cinema. Like you mentioned about Jujutsu Kaisen 0, you can clearly see a difference between the animation quality of the movie in comparison to the two seasons for TV. That's not to say that the TV quality is bad, it is really good, as is Haikyuu!!'s (for the most part). It's just them cutting this story down to *two* movies and then not giving us movie quality animation for one of those movies definitely feels even more like a kick in the teeth from the animation studios. Honestly though I will say it was easier to watch on Crunchyroll than in the cinema due to the bad choice of font for the subtitles (they blended into the video in places because they weren't shadowed and only had a thin black outline instead of the usual thick black outline). Now this issue I had I could accept if not for the fact that Crunchyroll were the distributers for the movie in my country, so the subtitles shown in the cinema should have been the same subtitles and quality that we see on streaming videos on their site. That, alongside everything else, has made me decide I won't go see the second movie when it releases in cinemas. I hate that I can't go and do that and show my support towards Furudate and the source material, but no. Crunchyroll gets my subscription money and that will have to be all the monetary support I give towards the second movie. Thank you!!! You're the only reactor I've watched so far to be as frustrated at me at them reusing so much of what we saw in previous seasons. Like to me this should not be a standalone movie. This is a movie that showed be watched *in conjunction* with the series. So by that reckoning you should not need introduction of the characters and continually reminding us of moments from only a couple of seasons ago. Yes, by all means, add a couple but not as many as they did. And, again for the movie compilation, those moments should have been reanimated to be movie quality the way that they reanimated the beginning that showed Hinata and Kenma's first meeting from Kenma's point of view. The validation of you feeling the same way also made me go back and work out...of the 84 minutes of running time (minus 5 minutes 47 seconds for the studio names, opening, end credits, and after credits scene) a total of 3 minutes 4 seconds was used up on showing us those flashbacks that were just moments from the TV show with a filter on them, leaving just 75 minutes and 51 seconds of newly animated content 🤬😭 I definitely think it felt like way more time was given to the flashbacks, but part of that I'll put down to the pacing of the whole movie making it go by way too fast. I would definitely feel less terrified if they announced we'd be getting the Fukurodani match as an OVA like we got for the Tokyo qualifiers. It would give us a little bit of breathing room and mean I'd get more of my team 🥺 But since the news of "two movies, that's it" there has been no additional news of more content 😭💔 Surely (with how popular Haikyuu!! is both in Japan and on an international level) they'd easily recoup the costs of making more seasons and make a profit, and it would be more than what two movies could generate them. Unless, because they're giving us TV animation quality for movies, then they're managing to cut the costs to a bare minimum. With that it feels like them just trying to make a quick buck, rather than a continued investment in several more years of the show. And, like you said with the fast pace potentially being made for the TikTok generation, that feels like it's linked to the idea of trends and the worry that if they invest in years more of animating this series that it'll stop being "trendy" and they won't have the same fanbase to rake in the cash from. Can I say you did make me giggle that how you were able to remind yourself of how to pronounce Sakusa's name you thought of "Atsumu and Sakusa" together 🤣
