Land of the Lustrous: Episode 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 *DEFROSTING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This episode was one of the most bittersweet and heartbreaking episodes I've watched of anything in a WHILE -- not for the violence or action, but watching a character shed their innocence in the act of "coming of age," even if it's spiritually. UGH. Phos has my ENTIRE heart...I just want to hug them.

Yeah, Land of the Lustrous is keeping me on its TOES at this point! It’s WILD! And yeah, I really am so sad about them losing their innocence and not being able to “go back” - I guess I should look at it as being exciting, moving forward into the unknown! But yeah, it feels so heartbreaking in real time! And it hits harder with all of them looking with awe at Phos now that they’re “new” – it’s so sad, like you said, and very dark! I get it, too, but it hurts to watch for sure! And yes, “power is lonely” definitely seems to fit in this! Ugh…this series, I tell you! Thank you for the comment!

PHOS 3.0! I love it referred to as that! :D And yes, while I don't like "Melancholy Apathetic Phos" necessarily, I do like that they are stronger and at the end of the episode I felt better for them. Thank you for the comment!

I remember watching this when the show was being released. This was my favorite episode! Loved your reaction to the Phos 3.0 reveal!

You know, with most anime I have an idea of where the show is going and how it'll end, if for no other reason than to close the thematic elements it talks about. Not with Land of the Lustrous; I genuinely have no clue of where any of this story is going, because at this point there's no way for Phos to regain that innocence they had at the beginning and that seemed so central to the story itself. It's fun and terrifying, the not knowing, at the same time. Seeing Phos so changed and stoic feels so wrong. Heartbreaking, indeed. The way all the gemstones were on top of Phos, so mesmerized and interested of them now that they are strong and capable, was so cold. Before, when they were kinder and had all this life in their eyes, Phos was nothing but the weird one of their family; now that Phos conforms to their standards, they are suddenly cool. It's kinda dark. Like, I'm not saying that I don't understand were the other gems are coming from, they didn't know how to relate to Phos before with them being so fragile, and so they were the odd ones out; now, they have something they can relate to, their strength, and no matter how physically odd Phos is now, the rest of the gems are more accepting of them because they fit in better. Adamant's line, "power is lonely" seems to be a lot of the point of the story. As much as Phos has wanted to be powerful and strong, it has only chipped away who they are and made them traumatized, confused, and sad.
