DORORO: Episode 13 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*FACIAL RECOGNIZED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

In the aftermath of last week, Dororo and Hyakkimaru are distancing themselves from Daigo's clan, but that doesn't mean they aren't running into monsters...and trouble!

The lack of their mother's presence weighs on both of them this episode and we get a quite complicated and gruesome demon to deal with!

DORORO: Episode 13 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

I really feel for Dororo and Hyakkimaru and their relationships with their mothers and how sad it is! And seeing Hyakkimaru’s mom in pain hurts a lot as well. And Daigo being a realistically abusive spouse, yeah, he checks the boxes for realism, there. I hate for Tahomaru as well that he’s in this rough patch too towards his brother. And the face slicing vs. decapitating was…a gruesome choice! I could SO see the connection to the Faceless Men, too! And I love the representation of the carver being trans as well. Also, Sam would like me to think it was him that saved Frodo from the marshes! ;) I thought it was so sad how Dororo has learned from Hyakkimaru about “seeing” demons, but not that humans can be just as evil. 🙁And it makes sense, as Dororo is a young child, they’d easily fall prey to someone with all the markers of their beloved mother. Biwamaru is a source of happiness but also nervousness for me each time he appears! I love the concept of Dororo’s mom also playing the voice of Okaka - it worked really well! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

yessss, Dororo is such an anchor for Hyakkimaru and she needs to stay that innocent stability for Hyakkimaru! And honestly, I feel that the "gender" or pronoun for Dororo can go either way at this point! Hear, hear! :D I'm not sure why the animation got wonky - for a future episode, I did look it up and there was a reason for it, which I'll touch base on then! Thank you for the comment and kind words and huzzah on busy days! :D

Dororo breaking off what she was saying about her Mum talking about onsen because she doesn't want to hurt Hyakkimaru by bringing up such a sensitive subject regarding mothers hurts my heart a little but also makes me love our little scamp so much more 🥺 On first watching this I did think Daigo's wife died in the last episode too. It was a surprise to see her alive, but how bandaged up and in pain she is definitely show what a severe wound she inflicted on herself. Yeaaaah the minute you said "Oh it's gonna decapitate him" I kinda squirmed. They definitely went with a more squeamish choice with this demon. And body disposal via waterfall just seems sensible 😅 Though slicing off the face did slightly remind me of the Faceless Men from Game of Thrones...but at least for them the faces they took were already dead when they took them (even if they were the ones to kill them first, at least they were still dead when their faces were removed). Dororo dragging Okaka off to Hyakkimaru to check if she's a ghoul or something shows she is starting to learn not to trust what she sees with her eyes. But then once Hyakkimaru says Okaka isn't a ghoul Dororo lets herself be tricked by her senses. It's completely understandable as, for all intents and purposes, she looks and sounds just like her Mum 🥺 I feel like it really highlights that as mature as Dororo is, Dororo is still a young child who lost her mother far too young 💔 And then for Okaka to die too, honestly feels like Dororo having to go through such a loss twice 😭 Biwamaru appearing at the onsen and messing around with Dororo made me so happy. But that mentioning of popping up from hell felt like a call back to him being at the Hall of Hell. If I remember correctly there was a week between Episode 12 and this episode airing. Definitely agree that whilst Daigo is a toxic husband he is still a husband to his wife and is present. That feels very realistic for an abusive (emotionally and potentially psychologically) relationship like I think they have. I felt the same regarding Tahomaru. Like you said he's the one that started the fight. He'd also already seen a glimpse of Hyakkimaru's skills when he managed to slay Bakemonogani and save Hyogo in the blink of an eye, whereas Tahomaru struggled against it even with the aid of Hyogo and Mutsu. Yes I love the lack of attention drawn to the demon bringing back the carver and them becoming a woman. There are a few series that manage to do similar things that make me want to scream for more shows to be able to seamlessly include such things in multiple series and not only have LGBTQ+ topics raised within shows that heavily focus on such topics. It also felt a little like social commentary on how Okaka could lure more people to find a face for the Buddha as a woman than she might have managed in the body she was born into. It's Frodo that falls into the Marshes and Smeagol/Gollum drags him back out. But yes the way the ghosts reach out for him in that scene is very similar to Hyakkimaru in the pool below the waterfall. They had Fujimura Ayumi (the seiyuu for Dororo's Mum) do the voice acting for Okaka. And I definitely think she did a good job for sounding different when she was wearing Ojiya's face and when she was Okaka.

Anime Annie

The call back to the original anime is wonderful. I really like that they keep Dororo innocent. Well, she does have lots of secrets for sure. And slipping into “he” for her is understandable! To me, being gender ambiguous is a goal. 😁 Yeah, the quality of the animation does get a bit wonky in some areas. I have no idea why! A short response today, it’s another busy day for us. Thank you for the reaction, I think you interpreted everything spot on!
