Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volumes 1-4 Review & Volume 5 Reaction!

*GHOSTLY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I take a brief bit to recap my experience reading Volumes 1-4 of the manga (which coincide with the anime), but then we are DIVING into volume 5 - which recontextualizes the last episode of the anime and adds...QUITE a bit of new context...and a new character!

I officially am in LOVE with our new gemstone introduced this week...but man...death flags and suspicion all over the place, right?! Let's GO!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volumes 1-4 Review & Volume 5 Reaction!

The manga is sooooo good! You can definitely share your favorite screenshots (of the manga we’ve discussed so far anyway) in the Discord if you want! But yes, I’m really excited about this series already! I honestly wish the anime had shown that part of Phos trying the other jobs - even that one strip of panels adds SO MUCH to the relationship between Phos and the gems, Phos’s own sense of self-worth, etc. But anyway, it’s glad to at least see it in the manga! I’m a sucker for a design like Bort’s so I’m glad that we get to see them in all their splendor in the manga! And GHOST QUARTZZZZ - I love them so much! So spooky, and it fits their character to a “T!” I am about to read Volume 7 today as I type this, so I’m excited to get into it and for you to see me freak out with Volume 6….we’re not messing around, are we? Thank you so much for the comment and kind words!

The art style is really neat and I can see the impressionist influence (thank you for the links as always)! I have already noticed with the volume to come this week that the use of negative space, white space, and the shadows are soooo well done! Thank you for the comment and kind words - I can’t wait to see more!

Thank you! I’m SO excited to be into the manga already! That’s amazing she’s won that prize - I can see why, though! And wow, yeah 2009 is…longer ago that I’d like to admit. I cannot wait to see where this series goes! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Oh, it's here!!!!! I'm so intrigued with this manga already, and it's only being five volumes. For the first 4, recap volumes, I have to say that it was a lot of fun to see the art and how the mangaka draws. The way they play with lights and shadows, as you mention on the discussion, is so interesting and fascinating; or the way they capture emotion so perfectly, without ever saying a word. It truly has made of this manga one of my favorites already, I have so many screenshots! Seeing earlier on in the manga how Phos has tried to so many different jobs, rather than have it mentioned and touched briefly later on as the anime does, and seeing them fail at them makes me understand, and makes it make more sense how the other gems treat Phos way better. It's not that Phos isn't a fighter, but that Phos is clumsy, and they seem to be weary of their attempts to help because of it. A true, sibling bond happening right there, older siblings being weary of the younger, clumsier sibling. I didn't quite appreciate Bort's hair in the anime, to be honest; to me, it looked so plain and dull compared to the other gems'; but the manga really makes it shine and look stunning, and it uses Bort's hair to fill the space in the panels to make it look more dynamic and alive and just so much more interesting. Well, I can say now that I really like Bort's design. Ghost CREEPED the heck out of me when they first appeared XD For volume 5 I'll only say this, I had not previously read the manga as of last week; but, in preparation for this video I went ahead and read Volumes 1 to 5, just to be ready for this video... and then I couldn't stop and have been reading nonstop for the last week. I'm in volume 7 and OBSESSED right now. I'm pretty sure this is my favorite manga ever now.

I love the art style of this series. It reminds me of the art work of Kay Nelson ( https://pin.it/7hLFDOaRk ) and Aubrey Beardsley. ( https://pin.it/2lfHSyKd8) Now to be fair, this style of art along with the impressionist were influenced by Japanese prints! So it has come full circle. To me negative space and the use of shapes and composition is just fantastic in this manga!

Welcome to Haruko Ichikawa's world! I really love her art style and it has been standing out since she won the prize of the award for new mangaka of the magazine named Afternoon(same magazine as Skip and Loafer) I still remember the shock I got when I saw her award winning one shot as a newcomer. I have the first edition of her debut manga which was published in 2009. I feel old I have some Land of the Lustrous dojinshi and they are so philosophical (or, completely idiotic fun books) I'm really glad that you started reading manga
