If you told me that Momo's grandmother would be a gravity-defying GILF with a bat that doubles as a barrier-drawing pencil? I would have....not been surprised with this show! Hahaha!!
But still, what a badass entrance! This geriatric melee was definitely a lot of fun but I love a good OP-seeming mentor with layers to their motivations and personality and a penchant for being mischievous -- and this grandma fits the bill! Lots to talk about with gender subversions as well that I'm all about!

Oohhhhh, that is a really good comparison! I was not a shipper of Shinji and Asuka in NGE, but if they had been more like Momo and Ken, I might have been! Thank you for the comment!

Hahaha, I don't overall mind the shot - but I'm definitely going to point it out as a woman that had to grow up with that sexualization shoved in my face - I'm glad that modern Shonen at least pushes the scales into a more balanced realm for modern audiences. But overall, I don't mind the grandma shot, it's just worth mentioning! I love her character and I'm excited to see where she goes! And Ken x Momo interactions are *chef's kiss* for me! Thank you for the comment and modding with Gin! :D

I'm with you, call it out for being no reason for it - with that grandma magic she could make far better money outside of being a psychic! I think there's a line where you can discuss and engage your story around sexual topics without resorting to cheap fan service, just look at Utena for example (reminder, not a spoiler - just saying based on what I've seen so far which is the same as you). I do hope in the end there's some payoff for it all in this show though, because it is fun to see Momo and Ken play off each other and develop!

2025-02-06 01:10:17 +0000 UTCA quick note for 26:30: A non-spoiling fun pattern that emerges in the series is that anytime someone says “Momo you’re a genius” her instant reply is “I know”. I don’t think she has issues with second guessing or decision making. I think in that moment she just wanted a justification for doing what she was going to do anyway because of who she is. Also Ken does a great job going forward with being less timid talking to Momo, in the moments where it really counts.

More seriously, it seems her powers are very different from Momo and her powers comes from the "gods of the land" as she put it (maybe not her mindreading or whatever she used on that idol?) unlike Momo's powers that seem to be innate. So if grandma is using something to... spite gravity, it's probably some local deity helping out thinking we need more gilfs around. I liked the battle at the start and how grandma used the warding circles, sometimes when they use and explain domain expansions, stands or whatever else my eyes can sometimes glaze over as they lose me in... what would be the equivalence of "techno babble" but for spiritual/supernatural stuff? Anyway, here it just hit the sweet spot for me. If ever Okarun gains the confidence to... use his own name Momo would stand no chance. Grandma's mere mention of Ken Takakura made her faceplant running down that hallway. You haven't seen One-Punch Man? I think that one would make for someone great reactions, or just something to watch on your own time. As a parody of shonen there would be plenty of things to talk about, and in relationship to other shows too.
