Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 32 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*CRUSHED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Can we...can we be done with the "Pain Arc" anytime soon, please? This was "FRUSTRATION: The Episode." I am sure I will soften up on some of my frustrations as I watch the rest of the series, but this episode has definitely done the following:

- Made me appreciate and want to root for Nanami
- Make me highly suspicious of Anthy as a character and WTH she's about
- Make me loathe both Touga and Akio to the breaking point
- Make me ready to crash this car in a ditch and finish this Sex Drive business

Humor me, y'all. I know the show will give me answers!

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 32 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Ahh, I couldn't remember when I started in relation to Berserk, but wow, yeah, that timing! I definitely am glad that my schedule is more balanced and I'm not opposed to traumatizing or emotionally devastating series -- just maybe SA can take a back seat for a while after this. Thank you for being so kind and considerate, though!

Thank you for the kind words - Vinland Saga Season 2 makes me excited for future seasons -- it's just so good! <3 Long live Thorfinn!

Romaniablack

PREACHHHHHH!

Romaniablack

The Farmland Saga folks just irritate me so much! And "I have no enemies" is SO good! I agree 100%!

Romaniablack

Indeed, we need more young guys looking up at the Thors and not the Erens of the world.

Alex Kornejo

Yes, I have to admit disappointedly my initial blind watch of Vinland S2 I was unable to understand the deeper themes of it, and left it unfinished. So returning to it again, with the help of Romania's discussions and people leaving comments really allowed me to understand it much better and I ended up totally changing my opinion of the season to finally getting it. That quote is even better, so simple and even calls back Thors, I have no enemies is just a way of life we could all benefit from embracing. Love it!

L Freya

I feel Vinland is so underrated, specially when lots of people seemd to turn on it on S2 calling it 'farmland saga', talk about missing the point. I'm not the kind of person to get tattoos but "I have no enemies" is tempting me, because I want that engraved on my soul.

Alex Kornejo

Yeah, I definitely will talk about what frustrates me about that with Anthy - if you want to help Utena...help her! I know it's WAY harder than that, but again, I'll save that for the discussions - flipping someone off for calling things like they...kind of are...is a bit low for Anthy, but then again, we don't know the whole story! Yeah, not happy for tomorrow! But yay! Vinland Saga is SO GOOD - I love season 2 so much! I just love all of those characters, and especially the Thorfinn growth!! LITERALLY! I cannot wait to see what season 3 gives us when we get to it *waits patiently* And ooh, Arcane is a lot of fun and I'm so into the show and its characters - and getting my brother to hop in with me! Also yesssss, that's an amazing comparison to Thorfinn! The shows are crossing over! I love it! Thanks for the reply! :D

You started Utena around the same time as Berserk Manga Volume 23 and I remember thinking "oh shit, someone needs to warn her" but I'm not sure if the mods tipped you off about the content of the series. I think people got excited about your Evangelion reaction and just started throwing every emotionally devastating anime in existence at you all at once. I'm glad the schedule seems to be more balanced now, for your sanity and mine.

In my head, I feel like Anthy flips off Nanami in retaliation for being yelled at for being so perverted with her brother and for trying to get Utena to see the truth, but Utena just lets it fly right over her head, so Anthy flips off Nanami for messing with things! Maybe not, kidding a little, but Anthy is doing it wrong, she needs to band with Utena, say we'd be able to fight together and destroy the end of the world, break the cycle and be happy together, "we gotta get out of this place, 'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you!" But warm wishes aren't allowed at Ohtori! Oh no! Tomorrow's episode is going to be frustrating and awkward; I already DREAD IT! 😱 On a happier note, I'll just drop this here, I finished up your Vinland Saga season 2 reaction/discussions, loved them! Those final two episodes are so amazing! The whole season from the moment Canute gets on the ship to requisition the farms, it has been so gloomy. The whole story with Arnheid and Einar is also so sad! But those last two episodes were amazing! So much character growth with Thorfinn and Canute, for both of them. And then Thorfinn going back home with Leif, peak episodes as you said! And with that done, I've begun the journey through your Arcane reactions, it's nice getting both you and your brother in the discussion! I just finished the third episode of Arcane, and had to comment on the quote from it that catches everyone's eye - Silco says to Vander: "You'd die for the cause, but you won't fight for one?" (great quote btw) Thorfinn then immediately pops into the picture "You called?" Haha, that is just Thorfinn's Season 2 motto to a T!

Yeah, just warning, Sunday's episode is…not a fun one for me or anyone, so I apologize in advance. I really do miss the simpler times of the old duels and Anthy just…frustrates me a lot at this point. But anway! Like, why flip off Nanami? She’s going through it too! But yeah, the age thing is creepy and the way that the female characters (well, and Touga too) are sexualized just gets grosser and grosser. Especially the gloss, thing! I just hate the “losing memories after the duel” part. 🙁I want to say something with that for a future episode, though! But yeah, the frustration is real and I just…cannot STAND Akio! Anyway, thank you for the comment and kind words! Sunday will be a rough one, but I am through it now, so that’s good.

Romaniablack

Utena’s dimness almost borderlines denial at this point, but I definitely still think she just could be turning a blind or…or maybe she IS that dense! That’s a fair point about Nanami in relation to the duel as well! I’ll need to bring that up in a later intro! At least Nanami can keep folks in line! Well, this coming week was the worst, and that’s all I can say. But, I did get through it, so there’s that. Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Romaniablack

Just finished this episode for the first time last night, and thought, oh we're not through it yet, nope. I'm sure my daughter would rather go to hell at this point than transfer to Ohtori Academy. Anthy and Nanami are slowly trading places on the scale of liked/disliked/shit characters each episode! Remember back when this arc started, and the new animations all hit at once, the elevator sequel instead of the stairs for duels, the first time we saw the car and how sweet we thought it looked, well not anymore! I didn't notice it originally, but re-watching your reaction it was funny to see Anthy casually give the finger mentioning Nanami's name after she had left, when she's picking up the cup of jam Nanami knocked out of her hand, at about 3:35. The age thing is also creeping out more and more lately. And of course, right after bringing Utena up in a Dandadan comment about Utena lacking fan service while deal with sexual topics, we get that Nanami shot this episode, guess I spoke too soon there. I've felt in previous episodes they've aged up Nanami at times, but whenever I go and try to check, I end up doubting myself, the first time I really noticed it was in the Nanami's Egg episode, she is drawn a lot different in her pjs vs her jump suit / school uniform. She definitely had more gloss to her than normal this episode. I keep forgetting about the memory losses - haha - but yes, I do fear Nanami losing her memories after the duel, seems to be the day after losing a duel memories get wiped away? I could just feel all your frustration over Anthy and her ambiguity, and your fear of not having enough time to get to a happy place again with the characters, naturally. Let's hope the show manages to work it all out! But what a tough episode, and right after the previous one. I fear there'll be no more lighthearted Nanami type episodes ahead any longer, but I'll just be happy with anything besides the life and times of Akio Ohtori.

L Freya

Utena's dimness is normally endearing but here it's just irritating. I wonder if Nanami thought Utena knew about the incest but didn't care and that's why she dueled her. It's not made very clear in their conversation how Utena could have been that dense, at least in the translation. My favorite part of the episode is when she beats up her lackies to put them back in line when they try to stand up to her. Nanami runs these streets with her fists. I also agree that there was no need for a duel this episode, it was just there because they had to have one. Usually the duels seem related to the interpersonal conflicts, but there is really no reason for Nanami to be fighting Utena at the point (unless my earlier theory is true.) I know these past few episodes have been rough, I hope you're hanging in there.
