Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volume 6 Reaction & Discussion!

*DAVID LYNCH-IAN STYLED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I was not ready for a lovely character we just met to....well...you know the drill! OR DO YOU?! Because this volume went off the rails REALLY quick!

Ghost Quartz INDEED has a gem inside them, the Lunarians reveal a glimpse into....SOMEWHERE! And there are now more mysteries and questions than there are answers...good thing Phos is here to search for answers...right? RIGHT?!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volume 6 Reaction & Discussion!

Comments

Yeahhhh, I was NOT ready for how dark and intense this manga got SO quickly! It is VERY chilling, especially with Phos literally and figuratively falling apart, as you noted! I like Caringorm in this, especially with them and Ghost Quartz connected, but their connection and relationship with Phos is really interesting, I agree! That scene with Phos and the punches were crazy, though! It’s wild how this series can be so funny and then switch to serious and tragic on a dime! And also blending in some horror elements, too! I was NOT ready for Phos to lose their head! Since they were the protagonist, I just didn’t see it as a possibility, but oh how this series wants to prove me wrong! Thank you for the comment!

Gosh, this volume got so dark and heavy, so dang fast. I swear, my jaw was on the floor for most of it. While there have being elements of some uncanny sights, I can say that this volume is just chilling in more than one occasion, with the way Phos is just mentally, and physically falling apart. Cairngorm is pretty cool! I was really not sure about them at the beginning, truly jump scared by Ghost Quartz and all, but Cairngorm, with their weird relationship with Phos, is something I enjoyed seeing quite a bit. That scene with Phos waking up, going to look for Ghost, finding Cairngorm and getting punched in the face only for it to repeat had me in stitches because it was so funny. I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but the way this manga mixes deep, thoughtful elements and truly comedic bits, and now even some horrific panels, is something that has me falling more and more in love with the manga. It's a very tasteful blend, not putting comedy where it sticks like a sore thumb, but in the perfect place for a nice, and much needed little relief from the ever mounting tension. Phos losing their head was NOT in my bingo card, even though, in retrospect, it's not something that is completely out of the realm of possibility and I really should have considered it happening. What a way to end the volume.

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I’m so glad to be reading the manga as well, now! I’m hooked! And yes, the Lodge and David Lynch vibes are definitely in this volume! YES, especially with his transcendental meditation and dream-like quality in that series – OMG – I just need Bort with a piece of cherry pie and cup of damn fine coffee, now! 😀 I also love that the cliffhanger could have been one shocking moment, but instead, it draws you along to an even MORE shocking cliffhanger! Which I’m definitely excited to see where it goes to!

I love the David Lynch feels of this volume so much - SO MUCH mystery! I definitely am excited for the series to answer all my discussion questions, haha!! But agreed, it does do body horror well and to a scary extent without being grotesque! And yes, the personification of the gems does make us want to connect with them! But yes, let’s see where this goes!! I’m definitely intrigued by the mystery! Thanks for the comment!

Yes, lodge feels! I was thinking about how Kongo and his attachments, Shiro, the game board and that room. He is trying very hard to not remember them. Or is he surprised when he does remember them? Maybe he thought he severed his worldly attachments! If there is one thing that Land of the Luscious does well, it’s body horror! By making these gems into a humanoid form we empathize with them. When phos has her head explode, I know I wince a bit! As far as manga I’ve read, I’d have to say that I put this up there with Berserk as some of my favorite reading material. Let’s see what happens in the next volume! Thanks for reading to us! I was reading along in my copy so it’s extra fun!

I'd never thought about it until your reaction, but I can totally see where the Lunarian cabin has the same aura as The Lodge from Twin Peaks. Especially apt comparison given Lynch's views on transcendental meditation and the nature of dreams. Bort = Dale Cooper??? Or maybe more realistically Albert :P The volume ends really do pull you along to the next installment and not in a cheap feeling way. I was impressed reading it when the volume *didn't* end with Phos losing their head. I feel like that would've been perfectly shocking and a sufficient draw. But ending with the Lapis head reveal gave readers so much more to chew on in the interim and really ponder the same questions as you are at the end of the reaction. I'm super glad you chose to continue this in the manga.
