that is true! And that is fine -- I mean, it would be cool to see if I get those points by watching the show and reacting and discussing it too, right? :)

This episode had so many good moments! And so action packed, I agree! And yes, I like the progression we’re slowly seeing in Okarun for sure! The red colors were so jarring but then that beautiful teal color opened up and it the contrast was really effective! And yeah, Okarun getting his weenie back this soon was interesting! I was expecting it later as well! But yeah, what do we do now? We shall see! But yeah, Momo and Okarun are just PRECIOUS! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

Thank you for the comment! That is helpful about the slang and how it varies the meaning a little in Japanese. That is good to know!

My favorite part of this episode is, without a doubt, the scene with the classical music in the background and Momo and Okarun just running/guiding Turbo Granny where they want her. Such a cinematic moment. Anyway, this episode was super action packed in a great way! Something I appreciated a lot was seeing Okarun, who initially doesn't know what to do and is waiting/hoping for Momo's help, decide that he will do something and fight back against Turbo Granny, even though there's little he can do without his powers. It's slow progress for his character, but at the same time keeps up with his personalty beautifully as he has being trying to protect his new, and only friend since episode 1; though in episode 1, as soon as his powers are neutralized, he gives up, and now he actually figures out a way to do something. The world being washed in red when the Location Bound spirit is near them is such an aesthetically cool detail that I will never get tired of, specially when it becomes so dynamic in this episode, coming and going depending on the distance of the spirit. I was not expecting for Okarun to get his weeny back so soon. I was sure that was going to be a series finale event, and I appreciate the subversion of tropes and expectations a lot. Though it does make me wonder how the heck the show will go on now, because surely Okarun won't just be powerless now, right? *Right?* Cute moments between these two literally have my heart, and them both not wanting, or being satisfied with parting ways after this ending was specially precious. Thank gosh, Momo is emotionally intelligent enough to provide an opening for them to continue interacting.

...If only established scientific facts swayed minds in public discourse. I think i'll wait a few episodes before i get more into the morals of Turbo Granny and what points the show might be trying to make (not just related to TG), so i don't have to think about what i can say or not.

A couple localization comments. In the part about the dead turning into crabs to cross the river Styx, Momo says "sanzu no kawa," which is a river in Japanese Buddhism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanzu_River I guess for the purposes of the bit, it's also just a river dead people have to cross--but I wouldn't necessarily expect Hades to show up. Unless there is a plot twist and the show suddenly goes to Greece, then I would dead-ass expect Hades to show up. In the part where turbo granny is complaining about young people not talking properly, when she says you don't respect elders, turbo granny says 'respect' in English. Momo replies, saying that she respects how much turbo granny bullies young people (also saying respect in English). Momo also calls turbo granny 'paisen' which is swapping the syllables of 'senpai', and just means senpai but said in kind of a slang way (also I guess it's not that clear if she and turbo granny have a senpai/kouhai kind of relationship). Momo also says 'ssu' which, is 'desu', but omitting the first syllable (saying 'desu' would be more polite than saying 'da', which she mostly uses in the episode, but 'ssu' is maybe a bit more slangy/less formal 'desu'). So in terms of word choice, she's making a show of speaking a bit more politely here, but is obviously screwing around. Turbo granny says to speak Japanese properly, that she can see through Momo's plan of using English to fool the elderly, that she really hates English, ending in the classic line "son of a bitch da ze." So the only English word that Momo actually used in this exchange is 'respect,' and rather than getting mad about Momo's attitude/word choice in Japanese, turbo granny gets mad about her using the same word in English that turbo granny literally just used. The localization of this works pretty well overall, I think you get that turbo granny is mad about perceived disrespect, Momo responds in a way that perhaps does not indicate a heartfelt level of respect, turbo granny says son of a bitch. But you don't really get that turbo granny is picking a fight about something that she herself just did.

I was also thinking more of the “alpha male” mentality that you see from a lot of men on social media as well - maybe they should read about that faulty research. Someone should share that with them, haha! But that’s good to know. That would make sense with her possessing the people in town and we see the spirits leaving the crab at the end, which would confirm it. Yeah, explaining that whole incident in town - they’ll probably handle it like how Mob Psycho 100 did, haha!! Well, I think Ken just seemed to be in the “wrong place at the wrong time” and TG saw fit to punish him because he’s a man - which isn’t right, but that’s just how it happened. Thanks for the comment!

I love Momo and Ken’s relationship so far! It’s so adorable! And I love how quick-thinking Momo is as well! This series doesn’t waste any time! I like how everything is packed into the episode! The idea of Momo relating to Thorkell is hilarious, though! They definitely are packed with Charisma! And all the reds!! I loved when it turned into the softer blues after we learned TG’s backstory! Thank you for the comment and kind words! I appreciate it! Yes, I’m super excited to see where the story goes from here!

Romaniablack

Oh yeah, the metaphors, innuendo, they're all there! It's on the nose, but I think it definitely works for this story! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

OH yeah, I appreciate that this episode gave us TG's backstory and it wasn't just that she was "evil" but had an important message behind it! What a wild ride of an episode! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! So glad I could help make your lunch more fun! Hahah!! :D

Romaniablack

Thanks for the comment! The mods flagged your first paragraph as I've asked not to read manga spoilers so I couldn't read it; with the second paragraph, I feel I talked about that cultural aspect in my discussion portion, so thank you for the comment and expressing your thoughts!

Also the deal with the "alpha male" thingy is that it came into prominence based on faulty research done on wolfs in captivity, and the researcher(s) that made that study has disavowed it and regrets the "power" it's gotten in the current zeitgeist. Someone likened it to observing inmates in prison to discern optimal male behavior, what could go wrong. In their natural habitat wolfs have a "alpha" couple that are hierarchical over their own offspring, that is quite a bit different than the meaning "alpha" has gotten these days. Might be wrong but how i read the situation was that Turbo Granny used spirits from the cemetery to possess the people in the city (as we see people change and drop their smart phones and we know TG can use her powers through those). Makes what happened even harder to explain with not only buildings destroyed but people ending up in other parts of town with no idea how they got there. If Turbo Granny wants to go after men for their crimes against womankind one thinks she could find a better target than Ken, why not Momo's first boyfriend? He seems like he could use losing his junk for a bit, Ken on the other hand seems much more undeserving of such punishment.

at the risk of sounding like a juvenile, it seems fitting that a damp dark tunnel is central to t.granny's power. that and the antithesis of her source of power is a bullet train leaving at dawn.

I have some sympathy for Turbo Granny! Such a wild ride of an episode! I watched during lunch! Hahaha! Short response today! Really enjoying your reactions to this series!

Moominkomet

Currently have only seen the first four episodes, so no spoilers ahead - I really enjoy how Momo and Ken need to think unconventionally to overcome the battles so far, gives the battles a fun surprise element to them - like in the second episode with the sumo wrestling - first Momo devises the conventional tactic of getting the hand on the ground, and then when that fails the less direct tactic of her appearing to be hit multiple times only to trick the alien in to moving her outside the barrier so she can use the talisman against it. When you only have ~22 minutes or less for an episode, a witty, quick-thinking character like Momo lets you really drive the pace high speed, in stark contrast to the slower paced feel I often had from Vinland Saga in many episodes. Momo has a little bit in common with Thorkell perhaps, in the way they both have tons of charisma despite being blunt and are forces of nature and not to be messed with! The color theming of episodes is so beautiful in this show as well - the grayscale from the second episode was great, and same with the reds from this one, and I also have been loving the upbeat music inserts for the fights, like the William Tell Overture remix from this episode. Enjoyed your reaction and discussion - and hearing you make the comparison between Dragon Ball's Roshi (which I've never watched, but I get what you're saying) versus Dandadan's Granny asking for looks. Eager to see where the show goes from here!

Some comments as a manga reader: Regarding Momo being sidelined for Ken - this never happens. She was intended to be the protagonist of the story initially but the author found it was hard to sell a shonen without a male protagonist, and (thankfully) we have Okarun, and they're wonderful together. Momo is his favorite character. Secondly it's important to remember that we look at the story from a Japanese cultural POV. If you look at Turbo Granny when she's being talked about by Seiko (Momo's grandma) she's looking at an offering for the dead girls in the tunnel. It is abandoned, telling us the spirits of the girls are neglected, which is why turbo Granny cares for them. When Momo and Ken return to pray you see flowers and offerings there. A Japanese viewer would understand this context. TG is based on the Yokai of an old woman who is abandoned when a household has too many mouths to feed, making her sensitive to that feeling.
