I keep saying that this series gets better and better, but at the halfway point, this series is INCREDIBLE! This week is festive and holiday- themed, but it definitely is signaling the start of a new year and for a few characters in particular...this could signal some SERIOUS changes afoot! I can't wait to talk about this episode with you all!

Comments

No problem!! You all commenting and gushing is also appreciated!!!

Romaniablack

No, no, you haven’t, I promise. *I’m* the one that doesn’t want to cause you trouble <3 I’m totally fine using some restraint, and it’ll feel super nice to gush over it later. So don’t worry, you’re totally fine! Thank you, actually for being so honest and open about comments and communicating so we can all enjoy talking about these series, I appreciate it a lot <333

I never want to make someone not want to comment, so I'm sorry if I came across that way. I love reading your comments, even if they are short!

Romaniablack

I think I’ll keep my thoughts, theories actually, to myself from now on with this show XD There are some that just play with my head and I can’t wrap my head around, and so all my theories end up wrong; and then there are some that just click, and I feel Ping Pong is one of the later ones XD I don’t want to cause you any undue anxiety, though, so I’ll just dump all my thoughts at the end, whatever ends up happening XD

Alexandra Q

Hey, thanks! I had no clue where you were, so like it was early on, it all was really coincidental with you pointing out things that ended up happening in the show! I appreciate you saying that! ^^

Romaniablack

Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry this sound in any way, shape, or form like a spoiler (about Peco and Smile) because I never meant to put stress on my comment for you when it’s meant to be fun and relaxing😣 I’m only on episode 8 myself (I watch with to week, after watching the reaction) having never watched the show before because I fully thought the aesthetics were terrible 🙃 So these are just my thoughts and what my brain came up with, no idea what’s going to happen or how this whole thing ends. I’ll be more careful and make sure to make my comments clear and spoiler-free. Again, I’m so sorry this caused you any stress 😣

This episode is one of my favorites of the series, if not the favorite, so far! THE DRAMA. I definitely agree that Peco and Smile were enabling each other - Peco bothered me most of the first part of the series, because he WASTED his talent and was cocky when he had no right to be. I will have a lot to say about them as we go, so stay tuned for that! Just a note, I have watched a little ahead and made lots of theories, and your note about Peco and Smile becoming equals - at this point in the episode, that’s not really evident yet - so please double check to make sure things aren’t spoilers, if that’s cool. I LOVE your comments and your thoughts, but want to be super cautious that important events (like what I’m theorizing that you might be accidentally confirming) are not spoiled. Thanks! That said, this episode starts my journey to recognize I like Peco much more when he’s working hard and trying with Obaba than I did when he was arrogant at the start of the show, and this series does great with that characterization. HAHAHAHA Sweet Alabama indeed – yikes. I know it’s a thing in Japan, but it’s still really weird to me. I would rather have Yurie with Sanada, honestly, at this point. I agree, though, Kazama doesn’t really seem interested in Yurie, either, but I agree - realizing Yurie’s walk was by herself the whole time? SO SAD! I discuss the thing about Katase’s coach and the rest of the team in this episode and throughout the series, but yeah, as a coach myself - if students don’t put in the work? There’s a breaking point and do I spend all of my time on a student that doesn’t want to meet me halfway? I’ve been burnt by competitors that I devoted a LOT of time towards, and they didn’t want to put in the work themselves, and it honestly felt like a waste of time, when there were others that clearly showed aptitude and the DRIVE that I could have devoted more to - but as a coach, that’s just my opinion, but I get where Kozuimi comes from, especially in an individualistic sport like this. I love Kong and his team, though! The entire episode devoted to them being so sweet with one another - it was just so heartwarming! Sakuma’s speech was SO GOOD - definitely a highlight of an outstanding episode! It was really a wake up call to Peco and I’m excited to see where it goes to from here! I can definitely see the comparison with “I love you” at the end as well! These two coaches, loving their protegees! Thanks for the comment!

This episode was just something else, wasn't it? I loved it, though, of course. Look, I don't think Peco doesn't have talent. I think Peco and Smile are equally talented, and they had both being wasting their talent, in a sense, enabling each other. Smile, by holding himself back in what I believe was his way to repay Peco for being his friend and hero; and Peco, by not taking training seriously. And both of them overtake this journey to reach their full potential and be true equals. I LOVE the idea that Peco is more into the basics of Ping-Pong, and I want him to get so good at them, and win with only them, disproving what Sakuma told him, that Ping-Pong is evolving, and the basics are obsolete now. Because, yes, EVERYTHING evolves and new techniques arise, this is true for just about anything, but the basics, well mastered and applied, will ALWAYS be effective because everything else COMES FROM THE BASICS. Plus, having Peco tell us this using his love for candy is just plain fun and great storytelling and characterization. When I saw the scene of Yui entering the bathroom while Kazama was bathing, all I could think was, "What in the sweet Alabama is going on here?" Lol. My thing with Katase's coach is hat, he is not really coaching the rest of the team. At the beginning of the show, he was doing maybe the bare minimum coaching, always to the side, sitting and, sure, watching over the practice, but he seemed very uninvolved; and then he saw Smile and became obsessed with him. Now, we see him enter the gym and not even addressing anyone else, just Smile. And I get it, sort of, it's so easy to get lost in raw talent, but I think they all deserve the coaches respect and attention as part of the club, whether they are going to be ranked players or just do it for fun. I mean, at the beginning, Smile didn't want to commit either, and the coach hounded him until he got him to break and accede to train harder, to push himself, and to give it his all... why hasn't he done that with all of them? Because they wouldn't commit the same way that Smile has? Does he know that for sure? If you had told me Smile would at the beginning of the show, I wouldn't have believed it. Yes, maybe a bunch of them are only there for fun, it is a high school team after all, that is to be expected I think, but as long as they are all willing, and most of them have proved to be willing enough to show to practice every day and do their hours, who is to say that with proper attention and coaching they wouldn't have liked the sport more. It kind of frustrates me to see, and with Katase's coach, how he seems to underestimate his own team. To all of it, Kong seems to be proving me right and being the antithesis to him. He is helping his team, who he called not good at all at the beginning of the show, with good cheer and patience, giving them the respect he had denied them at the beginning, solely because they are his teammates, and encouraging them that if they practice, while never becoming as good as him, they can improve, and they seem to be bouncing back from this with positivity of their own and discipline and commitment. Kong is just my favorite character in this show and I need all the good things to happen to him T_T I'm so glad that his mom came to see him, but it does make me wonder how long it had been since the last time he saw her. My goodness, the love triangle, though is it really one?, between Sanada, Yui, and Kazama - and I wonder if this can even be considered a love triangle, because I'm not entirely sure that Kazama is interested in Yui as I've not seeing anything romantic in his actions toward her yet, though I might be incorrect here - is such a mess, and I'm here for it XD The Christmas' celebration montage with Yui and Kazama going on a date only to be revealed that Yui has been alone all along was so gut-wrenching. Sakuma being the one to talk sense into Peco, when Smile, his closer friend by all means, is absent is such a nice little detail. I mean, and I could be totally wrong about this, I haven't finished the show nor have I watched it before after all, but it feels like Sakuma and Peco were friends before Smile came along, probably brought in by Peco; so, it feels full-circle that Sakuma, as Peco's older friend, in my book at the very least, is the one to re-focus him and get him moving. And then we have Peco going to Obaba and asking to be trained as if he didn't know anything and, one, I'm blown away by the humbleness and self-awareness of that statement, because I did not think that Peco "I'll be the best in the world" would have it in him to admit that his Ping-Pong has warped with laziness; two, it makes me so excited to see him potentially becoming better and actually taking things seriously. Obaba telling Peco, "I love you" reminded me of Katase's coach saying it as well.

Thank you! To your other comment, I agree with the external/internal journeys - we shall see where it goes! :D Thanks for the comment! I'm excited for the show to give me more with these characters!

Romaniablack

It really feels like Kong and Peco have far more external/outcome based goals, while Smile and Kazuma's journies feel far more internal.

Muz

Oohhh, I would agree with you on that but yes, “This XMas” is such a beautiful montage and one of my favorite anime moments in recent memory! I just LOVE all the character development in this series so far and it just gets better and better! I agree, I’m a sucker for character development so this series is checking off all the boxes! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

Love that you've compared Kong with Peco and Kazuma with Smile.

Muz

I used to say that the Spike v Vicious scene in episode 5 of Cowboy Bebop was the single best scene in anime. But the "This Xmas" song montage of Ping Pong really rivals it. I find it amazing that so much story about so many characters can be delivered with little dialogue and it progresses not only the personalities and motivations of all of them, but also makes us empathize with their struggles. This anime is a masterclass on character writing and development
