DanDaDan: Episode 5 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*MISCOMMUNICATED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This episode was a roller coaster for my emotions - running the gambit from me being so frustrated with the miscommunication, to feeling for both Momo and Ken, to feeling so relieved for actions that happened, to being just as bewildered with the DEVELOPMENT concerning Ken's...missing...well, you'll see in the episode!

This series definitely has me in the palm of its hand at this point!

DanDaDan: Episode 5 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Right?! Translation is a literal artform and there's always something lost in there!

Romaniablack

Yeah it can certainly be translation thing and intended tone not quite shining trough (and just cultural differences), first going from japansese to english and then to swedish. Would be weird if it all made it through unscathed every time.

Christopher Pettersson

I definitely empathize with Okarun! And I was afraid he’d feel rejected by Momo - I’m SO glad that they made up this episode; I didn’t want to have to wait for resolution on that front! And yes, I can see Momo being impulsive! But yes, she does actively work to make amends and set things right - I can relate to her in that respect as well! Maybe it’s why I love both of them so much because I can relate to them in different ways! But that chase scene made me want to shake them too!! And of course, that’s a great point that no one else would know the nickname she gave him *facepalm* I agree, though, Aira was a jerk and I did not like the way she treated Ken. *cracks knuckles* I would not have predicted that Turbo Granny would end up as the cat! It definitely fits her grumpy gremlin demeanor, though! I’m glad Ken still has his abilities to a degree, though! And yeah…the fact that a human girl was the dangerous one? Makes 100% sense! Thank you for the comment!!

Romaniablack

That is good to know!!

Romaniablack

Hahaha, I’m glad that they didn’t drag it out, either, and that made the overall scene much better in my opinion! But yeah, raising blood pressure for sure! 😀I love that Momo’s friends are in on things and are doing their best to help the situation as they can! I like that Ken said what he could in that moment and then afterwards, that the friends got onto Momo for giving him the cold shoulder when he clearly wasn’t wrong in saying what he did or deserving of said cold shoulder. I did not recognize her voice actress; I’ll have to look that up! But yeah, she didn’t leave a great first impression, mainly because I want to protect Ken, but maybe she’ll grow on me! We’ll see! And yes, Turbo Granny is here! HAHAHAH that is a fair point about female empowerment – although, the term “bitches” - maybe the translation meant a more generalized reference and not gender-specific? Translation is a tricky thing! I do love that Momo was supporting Ken there as she left Aira. That is good to know about balls, honestly! Hahaha Jupiter’s position in relation to venus or something, I’m sure! XD That is good to know that it would be understandable to not immediately notice them! Thank you for that information and the comment! 😀

Romaniablack

Oh, don't be ashamed! I was definitely more like Ken in high school and very dorky! I actually kissed a boy on the cheek and confessed my Sophomore year - it didn't go anywhere and I was friend-zoned but we're still friends and at least I tried? But yeah, I totally get that - youth IS wasted on the young, indeed! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

Oh wow, that is a great point! I had not heard of this theory or seen this chart and that is WILD! I will definitely bring yours and Alex's reply up in a future episode intro! Thank you so much for that and the comment! :D

Romaniablack

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! And yesssss, hahahaha, I’m a communication major and not someone that doesn’t just come out and say if someone’s bothering me so this was…ahhh… I can't believe it made me curse either! haha but I’m glad it worked out! It all crescendoed really well there with that kiss at the end and at least they talked things out in the end! I really am glad the friends are how they are by the end, especially when Momo shoos Ken away and they call her out on it - get you some friends that are supportive of you liking the nerdy alien-loving kid! <3

Romaniablack

I'm glad you all at least enjoyed me about to have a high speed come apart hahahaha!!

Romaniablack

That is a fair point; I like that observation!

Romaniablack

That is a very good point! I can see this show potentially trying to start some dumb love triangle between Aira and Ken, and because I’m so protective of Ken and Momo, I’d rather they not waste our time with that - because I want them to be end game - but if it helps Aira resolve some internal issues she has or whatnot…sure, as long as it doesn’t break Ken and Momo up, I’ll deal with it, hahahaha!! But thank you for pointing all that out! I appreciate it and the comment!

Romaniablack

Definitely! It helped for me as well that they kept it concise!

L Freya

Oh I’m sure most people have had a similar experience! This episode is a “ been there, done that deep regret “ episode! 😆

Moominkomet

It took a whole lot of will not to post a certain anecdote of my own, but I better not overshare... As you said, youth is wasted on the young, hahaha.

Alex Kornejo

Another odd body language thing that I noticed is how both Momo & Ken kind of wrap an arm around their head and fidget with their hair when processing emotions about the other, I noticed because they even do it while walking around and it's sort of an awkward thing to do, don't know if it's intentional to show their compatibility with each other despite their wildly different personalities or if it's just a pose the author likes so he just keeps using it. You could say it's just to show their awkwardness, but I think it's kind of particular.

Alex Kornejo

Might be her least favorite trope but for what is worth, it did make for a fun reaction.

Alex Kornejo

Momo's also the one that's come up with the winning strategy in every confrontation so far. That's another notch on her belt.

Alex Kornejo

Can confirm, as a teenager there was nothing more terrifying than a human girl.

Alex Kornejo

Haha I could really feel your frustration with the "miscommunication trope" i'm glad they didn't make you pop a blood vessel. I find that we all have those story beats and tropes we like and those we dislike but depending on how they are done we can find instances when we enjoy a "trope" we usually dislike and vice versa with one we do like. I do agree that the miscommunicating thing often can go wrong and get annoying but here i thought it worked as they didn't drag it out and it made for a fun little "frustration" montage. :P Again Momo's friends are great and know exactly what is going on. I don't think it's in any way how it was meant by Ken, or the author, but the "embarrassed" comment by Ken in front of all her friends could come across as a bit manipulative. I'm not saying Momo wasn't in the wrong but that someone as... guarded as Ken to say that in front of everyone felt a bit odd to me. But i do like how Momo's classmates are hollering and rooting for Ken when he speaks his desire to speak with her (makes it sound like i disliked Ken's comment and that's not it as it speaks to his insecurities, it just made me squint a bit). Aira as entered the scene and perhaps not left the best first impression. :P I wonder if you can guess what voice actor she has? I would never have guessed right and even now knowing i can't hear it. She is definitely not one of those voice actors you recognize immediately when they open their mouths. Turbo Granny has joined the team and in part because of her sympathy for those murdered girls, but when TG tells the "less" masculine male character to kill those "bitches" with a knife (and the metaphors one can make with that) to get his literal balls back i'm not sure i want to put her squarely on team Female Empowerment just yet. At least it feels like their is something here to talk about. Might have started as a bit jealousy but i feel as soon as Momo found out Aira was just playing Ken it transformed into just wanting to gas him up in front of everyone. I guess one can say that balls are like any other part of the body, unless the nervous system finds a reason to divert your attention to them they are no more noticeable than say your left ear or your right small toe. And of course they also have the tendency to descend or ascend depending on things like ambient temperature, your mood and i guess Jupiter's position in relationship to Venus or something? So depending on current configuration their apparent noticeability can vary widely... what i'm saying is that i can buy not noticing them missing for a while.

This is the episode that made me realize that Dandadan wasn't just a comedy, action show; because I was in near tears with the interpersonal drama. And, at the moment, it really surprised me, but it made me like it so much so fast. Okarun's insecurities, are so understandable, and seeing him feel rejected by Momo broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes. I'm glad that they made up in the end, because I'm getting really invested in their relationship, but it was an unexpectedly heartfelt episode. Momo can be a character that takes things a little too far, we've seen her do it both in her very first interaction with Okarun and now, so maybe she's impulsive; but, what I really like about her, is that realizes that she's gone too far and seeks to make amends every time. Maybe it's because of the conflict she had with her grandma as a little girl, that would make sense, but it is such a nice contrast to see in her, all that brashness but also the thoughtfulness and consideration. Oh, gosh, that chase scene was MADDENING, I agree. I wanted to shake them both so they would stay put and just meet each other already *lol* On the other hand, it speaks of how much they've come to understand the other that they were pretty accurate in the guesses they made of where the other might be, only failing because they were both looking for each other. They're both paying attention and putting in effort, even if it's harder for Okarun because of his sincerely terrible self-esteem; and we can also see it with them both being desperate to talk to the other about *their*, the other's, interests and not their own per se. I laughed so hard when Momo went looking for Ken to his classroom calling him "Okarun" a nickname *she* gave him, and not particularly long ago, so NOBODY would know him by it, but yet, she was very confident about that. That pink haired girl really made me mad, and I was so happy when Momo put her in her place so very subtly. What a jerk. TURBO GRANNY IS IN THE CAT! And she looks freaking adorable in it, LOL. When I first saw the ED and the cat in it, I was sure it was just a stylistic choice; I mean, the lucky cat fits very well with the general theme of the story, but, alas, it was not merely for aesthetic but because that's Turbo Granny. Love it. We needed the little, seemingly, chaos gremlin. Admittedly, it was very dark having Turbo Granny command Okarun to kill Momo and Granny just like that, and I was so relived and glad to see that Ken still has his powers (!) and did not need to consider it for a second. There's also the fact that this time around, the villain of the episode wasn't an alien or yokai, but a human girl, which is, possibly, even more terrifying.

I’m ashamed to say that all these years later, I too acted like this with a dorky guy that I liked! 😭 yes, he was a nerd for sure and I was, not so dorky. I got my braces off! 🤣 anyway, we were friends and I knew he liked me and I liked him but…. Damn, I ran away like the coward I was. And I was in high school! 🤦‍♀️ oh well…. Youth is waisted on the young as they say! I can so relate to these two! Hahahahahahahahahah 😑 thank god I got over that!

Moominkomet

You mentioned how if they weren't a pair of main characters, Momo would be the main. This is reinforced by Momo's position in class. she has the legendary "near last or the last window seat." Ken, more in the middle being the "loyal, trusted" spot. included link for reference. https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/18r9krm/where_the_main_character_is_seated_in_200/

Yes! I knew this was going to be a good reaction and I loved it! I haven't seen TOO many cases where you've had the opportunity to express your dislike of the miscommunication trope, but when it's come up it has been made VERY CLEAR that is your least favorite trope. I knew, getting frustrated with those few minutes of Momo and Ken missing each other again and again, that this would not disappoint in a reaction! And we make it all the way up to "fuck!" though just barely! A few "I cannot", and yeah, luckily they didn't play it out any longer than they did. And perfect frame to catch the kiss on! Another fun episode, I really love Momo's friends' expressions in this one when they realize they're actually a ship which can float by the way they argue with each other. "They get along!" Haha.

One subtle detail in this episode I always love to notice is the difference in Ken's bodylanguage between Momo and Aira (pinkhaired girl). When Aira touches Ken his first impulse is to jump and run away. Sure he gets red a little bit. But all in all this is kinda an awkward situation for him. Then after that we have Momo taking/claiming him locking his arm. And even when she is laughing her heart out there is this little moment were she rolls on ground bumbing into him sitting, like it is the most natural thing in the world. And generally from episode one they are easily in each others face and Momo, bumbing, hitting, kicking and even throwing him around and Ken accepting Momo's skinship without complaint or defensive reaction. It is, at least in my eyes, clear as day that the two have a deep connection, liking each other through their body language alone.
