Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 35 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 *BLOSSOMED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Utena, please remember your promise to Anthy. Why?!
Utena, please stop being starry-eyed and blush-faced around Akio. WHY?!
Akio, please go roll in a vat of gasoline and then light a cigarette.

This episode continues my journey through Frustration City with Utena's growing "attachment" to Akio, as Touga finally decides to make a move to be the final duelist - but can Saionji convince him that he's not just doing it for power for himself...but something else?

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Episode 35 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Hahaha - I do agree that Toga seems to care about Utena becoming a prince and like that, but maybe it’s reinforcing his own prince he’s pursuing - seeing someone like that reinforces his own desire? I would give Touga more grace, but he needs to apologize to Nanami first. ;P Thank you for the comment!

I would agree that it’s probably the weakest of the series in terms, overall. And yes, lots of backsliding, which just piled on the frustration! I would agree that Saionji and Touga getting away from Akio’s grip was the BEST part of the episode for me, too! And the damn horses…why aren’t they flying, right!? Thank you for the comment!

Honestly, quality-wise, I do think it is the weakest episode of the series. Setup episodes are fine, can even be great. An episode were everything is at a stand still can be great but a lot of what happens here feels like backsliding. Saionji & Touga starting to slightly deprogram away from Akio is kind of the highlight of this episode for me... And the horses finally make an appearance, sadly like everything else in this damned school, they're tainted by Akio's bullshit.

"Toga, no one is saying that you can't stand in the school hallway eating a carrot, but you can't just suck on it, after half an hour you have to take a bite." Toga seems to actually care about Utena's quest to be a prince (teasing her about never learning to ride a horse etc). He seems to like that part of her personality, while Akio seems to be trying to push her into a princess role that doesn't suit her. Toga at least appears to be irritated by that. If he does care for her he cares for who she really is.

No spoilers, just watched this episode for the first time - pretty tough post episode discussion today, hopefully the worst of it is over soon. On second watch alongside the reaction, knowing the weird carrot scene was being followed by horseback riding, Touga kinda looked a little like a unicorn holding the carrot up on the front of his head! So crazy theory, maybe the carrot means he will transform into the flying horse for Utena! And Akio transforms into Anthy's flying horse, but Anthy hops off mid-air, dropping him to his doom like Mario jumping off Yoshi, and Utena catches her and they get to be together haha! Memory loss and miscommunication seem to go hand and hand here, and if they weren't bad enough we have Akio too, and Anthy doesn't give us enough to get a read on her character which is frustrating. It bothers me a lot that Utena keeps acting all blushy and friendly with Akio, after what she's been through, her assault. I agree it's a terrible way to write it out and it feels like the show is treating it like it's ok now, and it's not. Even if the show wants to say it's because she forgot - that's what Akio does to the students, that's a terrible way to treat it. Hope the show recovers itself in the final four episodes! There's a couple other less traditional magical girl shows I'd enjoy to see you watch one day so don't ruin it Utena! Thanks for the reaction and discussion, I'm glad the show's almost done!
