DORORO: Episode 17 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*REUNITED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I have been waiting for this reunion the entire series and here we are! What all is involved with this episode? A lot, apparently!

A much needed encounter with Hyakkimaru and Jukai, as tensions start to build around his other family members and it looks like all the threads are going to start connecting for this final act of the series!

DORORO: Episode 17 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Any time Jukai’s hand or Hyakkimaru’s went to each others’ faces? DONE! It was so nice getting an entire episode devoted to them reuniting, and SO NEEDED at this point in the series! I really miss early-series Tahomaru – I hate he left his mom behind without seeing her and is acting more like Daigo. I hate it, honestly. Especially when he decides to burn the babies with the demon. 🙁 Yeah, having one episode dedicated solely to Tahomaru and one to Hyakkimaru back to back would have been neat! Maybe they didn’t want that much space between Dororo’s “rescue” and that, but I think it would have been better for his character overall. And HONESTLY, as much as I’m a little sad this series has rushed through a lot of character work (because that’s my favorite in stories), I SHOULD be grateful we got 24 episodes and not 12…ahhhh…good point! I won’t complain any more, hahahah!!! OOOHHHHH, that part with the demon from episode 14 makes SO much more sense now! Thank you for explaining that, now! Hahaha, I love how nature is forcing people to interact! If this is my way to stop the miscommunication trope in series, I will TAKE IT! XD That’s a great connection to Violet Evergarden! That is SOOO Good and I love that connection; I can’t wait to see how Hyakkimaru’s realization changes and develops as we move forward, but at least - hopefully - Dororo will be there to ground him! I love the conversation of moms and what they mean and how Hyakkimaru has learned that through Dororo! I love how it works for this episode with Jukai! It made me think of the “He’s not your step dad, he’s the dad that stepped up” meme! XD That is also a REALLY good point about Hyogo and Mutsu in this as well! I will have to note that in a future intro! And yesss, that note about Itachi vs. Hyakkimaru? LOVE IT! Thank you for all these great observations and the comment! Huzzah to the next episode!

Oh yeah, the Mama part!!! It was so sweet! And YES, definitely more weight to it! I was waiting for this reunion for so long and I’m glad it had a full episode dedicated to it, even if it did leave me wanting more! EDGE LORD STAGE! AHAHAHA that is great! So frustrating to see him be at that point, so hopefully we see where it goes but I miss the old Tahomaru from the first cour for sure! Thank you for the kind words and comment! Now back to saving Dororo maybe?!

Jukai's touch to Hyakkimaru's face did make me tear up a little because it's the first time Jukai is touching his real face (and not the prosthetic one Jukai made for him) but with his nerves back it's also the first time Hyakkimaru can feel Jukai's loving touch 🥺 I also think Jukai thinking of Hyakkimaru as that little kid before he killed the demons versus the Hyakkimaru before him splashed in blood is such a parental way of reuniting with a child. Tahomaru could have just seen his Mum for a few moments before going off to the rat demon. It definitely infuriates me to see him acting so much more like Daigo. Landslide, the new way to lock two characters in a room and force them to talk things out! 🤣 So Hyakkimaru's Mum talking about the one that failed to eat him I feel means I can tell you that back in Episode 14 the moth demon, Maimai-onba, when she mentioned to Sabame "the one the twelfth could not devour" she wasn't referring to their children but rather the demon that the Goddess of Mercy prevented from being able to eat Hyakkimaru. I gotta say with watching your reaction I did realise who/what scene I'm reminded of with Jukai trying to explain to Hyakkimaru where the path he is on will lead him. In Violet Evergarden when Violet has the conversation with Claudia and he tells her that she's burning because of the blood on her hands. But at the time because of Violet's character she can't physically see this metaphorical burning. Hyakkimaru is the same in that he doesn't immediately see what the issue with wanting his body back and killing all the demons is. But Hyakkimaru's realisation definitely comes quicker than Violet's when Jukai says that the path he's taking will lead to him being alone, and it makes Hyakkimaru realise that Dororo would still be by his side, but he needs to find her first. In that way his realisation is similar to Violet's in that her understanding of Claudia's words come after she learns of Gilbert's death. Even though he wasn't by her side like Dororo has been with Hyakkimaru, his lack of presence in the world led to her feeling alone and realise she was burning. Glad I'm not the only one that thought of Splinter for the rat's design 😂 He was just trying to nurture his mutant turtle sons! 😝 Also not personally fond of rats but definitely with Hyogo that I can't agree with Tahomaru's way of dealing with it and the babies. At least Hyakkimaru's way of killing the demons is quicker. Through Dororo Hyakkimaru has learned what an Okaa-chan is. And so much of what Dororo's Mama was is also what Jukai has been for Hyakkimaru. I was right there with you on my first watch of wanting Jukai to tell him his name, but Hyakkimaru deciding the person who chose to keep him and raise him is his family, his Mama, definitely fits so much better 🥺🥰 Also love the basic destruction of gender normative ideas that just because Jukai is a man doesn't mean he can't also be Hyakkimaru's Mum. I see some mirroring in Jukai saying he's glad Hyakkimaru has someone by his side to help him keep his humanity versus Tahomaru with Hyogo and Mutsu. Dororo is willing to go against Hyakkimaru's stubbornness and force him back to humanity as we saw when he killed the soldiers that killed Mio and the kids. Whereas Hyogo and Mutsu are both there for Tahomaru, but instead of fighting back against his stubbornness and belief that a lack of feeling is better, they both find a way to accept Tahomaru's new path and instead choose to follow him down it. Loved the difference between Hyakkimaru getting a boat and Itachi. Itachi went to the closest place to cross at and chose to "trust" someone to drive their boats rather than putting in the manual work himself, with the belief that if things go wrong he can just fight/kill his way out of it. Hyakkimaru however got a boat a little further away, but he chose to steer the boat himself and trust in his own physical ability to get to Dororo 🥺 Definitely agree that it feels like they've sped-run Tahomaru's change too much in this episode. I definitely agree that there needed to be a little more time to develop his character and Mappa giving just one episode to Tahomaru and one episode to Hyakkimaru's reunion with Jukai would have been a better choice than putting both these stories together into a single episode. I definitely understand your gripes about the series. As much as I love it there are definitely moments where I wish certain plotlines had been given more time to evolve, and a bit more time given to side characters' developments. Though I am thankful that it at least was given twenty-four episodes and Mappa didn't try to condense it down to a twelve-episode anime instead 😅

He had me at “mama”. I cry buckets at that part every time! For Hyakimaru to call Jukai mama has so much more weight to it. He is his mom for sure! Yeah, sometimes they cram a bunch of stuff in one episode without letting it breathe. It can feel rushed. I agree, a few more episodes would round it out. Even though they could have made this a two parter, it is one of my favorite episodes because of the Jukai reunion. Tahomaru, he is in his teen edge lord stage. Good catch on the burning the building call back to the orphanage! Yes, it’s frustrating for sure! That’s all I can say…. 😀 Again, you covered the episode pretty well. Looking forward to next week!
