Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volume 10 Reaction!

*MARRIED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Did I spend 35 minutes recapping Volume 4-9? Yes, because Phos's journey NEEDED to be reviewed before going back to the Moon after their failed attempt to reach Sensei and get him to pray for the Lunarians.

All I can say is that this volume went so far beyond what I expected -- I FEEL for Phos so much, I am so insanely curious about Aechmea and Sensei's "secrets" we still don't know, and I was not ready for the plot of this volume!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Ahhh, yeah, this series I’m sure is going to be so wild once it’s read all the way through and I may even have to go back through it again before the final discussion! But yeah, I think about these characters a lot! It really is sooooooo similar in its themes and arguments to AOT, now, which I would have NEVER imagined happening! I agree, the Lunarian food eating makes me think that they’re stuck there now - it’s very Garden of Eden, with Aechmea being like the snake that’s tempted the gems with the food that gives them the knowledge to never be able to go back. And with them wanting to become more and more “human” or like the Lunarians, I agree. And yes, the gems treating Phos the way they do is so sad! Especially when they take care of Yellow Diamond’s hurt, but neglect Phos entirely. But then there’s the earth gemstones and how they hide Phos…it makes me sad as well. 🙁I can’t blame Phos for going off the deep end after all they’ve been through. The fact that SENSEI is the one to reach out to them is WILD to me! And yeah, Phos was trying to help everyone…and just ruined themselves in the process. 🙁It’s really, really heartbreaking. I agree, I’m not really for the relationship with Aechmea and princess once you get down to it – I want Cairngorm to be happy, sure, but Aechmea groomed that relationship into existence in so many ways and manipulated Cairngorm. He may actually love them, and they may “deserve” each other, but I miss Ciarngorm’s former care…or well…Ghost Quartz’s presence, I guess. And yeah, I’ve read Volume 11, but I’m not sure I can wait for the comments before diving into Volume 12. Thank you for the comment!

Yes, Cairngorm and Aechmea totally deserve each other for sure! 😅

Ahhh, that does help a lot with the concept of “Nothingness,” so thank you for that information! I’ll definitely make note of that for the future! I will definitely touch back on that in Volume 12 (since I have volume 11 recorded now *dark laugh*). That’s a cool tie to the Transporter in Star Trek as well! And that is WILD about our cells replicating every decade! INSANITY! We are ourselves with changes - a wild concept! I definitely think Cairngorm and Aechmea sort of deserve each other, but there is a bit of manipulation on Aechmea’s part that rubs me the wrong way in how their relationship has been formed. I guess as long as Cairngorm is happy?! I do like that the gems want to grow and be better versions of themselves throughout Volume 10. And yeah, Poor Phos, though! I really feel for them…yes, to err is to be human, as we see in Volume 11. Our three “races” can’t quite help the part of them that is humanity. That last panel is TERRIFYING, though! I hate that you got sick - that sucks! I hope you feel better and thank you for the comment!

This volume was heartbreaking, indeed, with Phos! I hate to see them depressed and tired...and then so desperate! I loved that they went back to how they once were for a second -- I hate that it's not really Kongo's fault that he's broken...I feel for him so much. And yeah, I felt bad when the gems broke Phos and scattered them...it's just "how can all of the bad things happen to this one gem": THE MANGA. All that pressure that's built up for hundreds of years...I feel for our gem...and am very concerned for the future! Thank you for the comment!

Romaniablack

That is so good to hear!

Awww! Thank you! Yes, I’m much better now! 😊

Be Happy

There is so much I want to say about the recap, and this volume as well, but I'll stay my mouth until the end XD Just know that this series really has made me feral, and just be constantly pondering about so many things. The Attack on TItan comparison is really on point. One thing I will say, well, one of two, is that seeing the gems eating the lunarian food had me so on edge. It's a funny moment for sure, in the midst of the weeding, and they just eat this weird macaroons that makes them glow for a second, and it is a clever little thing considering they don't need food but light, but it also had me thinking about that translator's note from the previous volume and how eating the food from the lunarians could be equaled to eating the food from the underworld, thus trapping you there to never be able to leave again even if you wanted to. It gave me this huge sense of foreboding, and made me think that there truly is no going back for the gems anymore, they have reached a place that has no return; only for that to be confirmed, sort of, with them wanting to become lunarians now. Another thing that burns me is the way that the other gemstones treat Phos. There's a difference, I think, between being mad, and it's a different thing to break Phos into pieces and hide them all over so they can not be recovered, and do it gleefully enough to be able to joke about it. That sort of turned my stomach. Yes, I understand them being mad at Phos, but this is one of their own, a gemstone, and they are just doing this very nonchalantly. And then, the gemstones on the moon just... don't even try, as far as we can see, to go and retrieve Phos but calmly have a chat with Aechmea and make plans for the future. The only one that cares about Phos is Adamant, who literally spends 220 years thinking about them and carefully plotting a way to rebuild them. And it all makes me so sad, because, one way or another, Phos was really trying their best to make things better for everyone else, and broke themselves in the process to such a level as what we see them now, only for everyone to forget about them. Aechmea and "Princess" are just weird, and honestly one thing that I truly disliked from the manga. Not because it was a bad thing it happened, I think it's fascinating and it serves a very interesting purpose, but because they are sort of insufferable together XD I do not like the change that Cairgorm takes after becoming "Princess", to be honest. There are more things I want to say, but I'll reserved them for later. You are stronger than me being able to wait before reading the next volume, because I blazed through the last couple of volumes, not being able to put them down after things had become so complicated and messed up.

God, this volume is absolutely heart breaking when it comes to Phos, it hurts to see Phos so desparate and tired by the end. Seeing him almost revert back to old Phos by relying on Kongo again, sincerely asking him to pray, having that little flashback of Phos remebering Kongos kindness. The pressure of the future of the gems, the lack of any support system and the distrust from the earth gems. Getting shattered after merely reaching for Kongo and then getting buried for 220 years, it's no wonder that the pressure and frustration and desperation that first started to build up all the way back when Antarc was taken finally burst out.

So I had to look it up because I’m not Buddhist. Nothingness in Buddhism is different than nothingness in relation to nihilism. It’s described as emptiness, void, I don’t have a good definition of it. So here is the wiki of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%9A%C5%ABnyat%C4%81 a short video: https://youtu.be/CYqaWmc4OGA?si=qKETbPg3dkB8291l. I’d say that the lunarians wanting to return to nothingness is not nihilistic or self hatred but just the opposite. The Ship of Theseus, the other thing I always think of is the transportor in Star Trek, is there anything of the original left! https://youtu.be/nQHBAdShgYI?si=_3V-cTKMJ5h4ncG2 Biologically, every cell in our body gets replicated every 7 to 10 years. We are a totally different thing every decade! I find that fascinating! To think a 90 year old has totally replaced themselves 9 times already! But, we are still ourselves with some changes. The relationship between Cairngorm and Aechmea is, well, kinda typical. Is it the healthiest? Maybe not, but they are willing to make it work. It does mellow into, “What are we having for dinner.” I like the fact that the gems that want to explore and improve themselves are able to. At some point, Cairngorm was always being dressed in frills by red beryl, and hated it! Ghost Quarts never liked those things but Cairngorm did! They could never indulge in it though. I say, “girl” let your freak flag fly! https://youtu.be/GuJQSAiODqI?si=NQUk7aP6c2TBQsGq Poor Phos, no doubt they fucked up. If they where honest to start with, maybe things would be different. Unfortunately to error is to be human. That last panel! I’ve been under the weather this weekend and so I enjoyed you reading to us this volume #10. Thank you! 🤧
