Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volume 11 Reaction!

*HEARTBROKEN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Our dear Phos....frustration, anger, sorrow...they've transformed them into something quite monstrous...and quite...human.

My heart was broken and enraged at the revelations and actions of this volume! Aechmea has some plans, clearly, and is withholding some crucial information...will it reach Phos and the others...and will it even make a difference at this point?

Hoo Buddy...we're in it now, aren't we?!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Land of the Lustrous: Manga Volume 11 Reaction!

We probably shouldn’t be surprised, considering his grooming of Cairngorm was foreshadowing of that to me, but it’s still a surprise and slap to the face and I hate it and it breaks my heart! I hate seeing Phos in so much pain and so angry…it’s just heartbreaking! It really ticks me off that Aechmea was INTENDING for Phos to break - that them becoming human and hateful of all around them was their GOAL. I just despise him using Phos like that. And Aechmea making the decision to end all life without telling anyone else or letting them process and decide if that’s what they want? Boooooooo. *throws tomatoes* Yeah, the idea that the gems are so fragile - we can DEFINITELY see that through Phos, but it’s a great representation about how easily we break as people and how interaction is honestly HARD, whether you’re a human or gemstone. And yeah, the revelation that peace from the Lunarians gave Bort a new “purpose” was STRIKING. And yeah, if Aechmea had just let them be, they could have all ended up happy. HAHAHA – I will take that levity of them looking like a rock band! I seriously NEED it to prepare for Volume 12. And yeah, I’m excited and also wanting to throw up at the concept of what could happen the next two weeks. Thank you for the comment!

Ooohh, hahahahahaha, that is so sad the adaptation was atrocious! But thank you for recommending that book! The title alone sounds so wondrous but also so ominous as well! Yeah, the idea of is “softness” a good or bad thing - I think Yellow Diamond proves alone that it depends on the person and our own idea of “utopia” differs for each of us. And yeah, we can’t just have nice things, can we? But that David Bowie song is such a great choice! I honestly have not read volume 12 yet - I wanted to wait until after seeing y’all’s comments…hoo boy…it’s going to be a ride, I’m sure! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

When I tell you that the discovery that Aechmea has being grooming Phos to become a human slapped me so hard in the face, I'm not kidding. This volume breaks my heart in so many ways. I mean, from the moment we heard from Ventri that the lunarians are the spirit, that they are trying to become human again, the idea is planted in our heads; and yet, when we finally meet the fable lunarians, they don't want to become humans, they want to cease to exist all together. I was sure, at this point that the idea had been discarded; it was easily believable as the admirabilis didn't necessarily know the full scope of things. So, getting to come back to this, to the lunarians and humans, is, on the one hand, really satisfying. But the reality of it is beyond heartbreaking. Seeing Phos so full of pain and anger is not something that I thought we were ever going to get. Their broken, wishful declaration that Sensei still loves them after being brought back to the moon made me specially sad, because despite everything, they still love Sensei, doesn't matter what they try to convince themselves about. But that love that is still there, the need to be recognized as good and useful, by the other gems being twisted by their pain over the last 220 years into such a deep anger, well, it certainly makes sense, but it just is so twisted and sad. AOT references indeed. Ugh, I really got mad at Achmea, with the way he has manipulated everyone. Not just by making Phos into a human, but by the fact that Sensei praying means the obliteration of all three races with humans origin. A small moment that really called my attention was Goshen telling Pad that it's being so long since the last time they touched another gem, and it's scary; contrasting that moment with the earth gems literally having to make a capsule so Cinnabar could hibernate with them. The idea of touch being something that the gems lacked, because they would break each other if they did, and them being able to find in it between the lunarians because they are soft, and the impact that could have had on them as well. I don't quite know how to put into words, but it strikes me every time. Bort chosing to stop fighting and rather raise jellyfish in a world without war is another thing that really didn't contribute to my health. I mean, the earth gems haven't had to fight, well, none of them to be honest, in over 200 years, and that time of peace really did them all good. The earth gems are quietly enjoying a birthday for Sensei, and the lunarian gems are thriving in their respective areas, all of them happier for it... couldn't Aechmea leave things well enough alone as they are? Is as you say, it doesn't seem like he cares about anything else than what he wants and everyone else be damned. Look, I have to say though, as heartbreaking and meseed up as everything in this volume is, the way that Phos and the rest of the moon gems look when they apprear above the school was so funny to me, like a rock band or something *lol* Regardless, my wishes for this manga at this point are simple, let it stop because the angst it's so heavy I can barely stand it.

One of my favorite stories I have ever read or owned is a book I bought when I was a kid. When I say kid, I was probably 10 to 11 years old. I have read this story consistently over my lifetime every few years. The story is Childhood’s End by Arthur C Clark. It is about aliens and humans and utopia and destruction. I’m keeping it vague just in case you want to read it. The Sci Fi channel did an adaptation almost 10 years ago that is absolutely atrocious. Don’t watch it. I bring this up because of some aspects of this story, namely the idea of utopia. In some regards another story I’ve brought up before also kinda deals with it too, “Omelas”. What is a utopia and can someone truly be happy in one. The panel of Kongos birthday party brought this to my mind. I could be totally barking up the wrong tree, but the gems are basically immortal beings who lead very stagnant lives. Yes, it’s peaceful, but without the interaction of the lunarians, they have become “soft”. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well, I guess that is up to your point of view. In Childhoods End, utopia was reached by humans with the assistance of aliens. Soon after, humans regressed into a kind of boredom that stunted learning and creativity, it limits humanity. Were people happy? Oh they were happy, prosperous and had so much free time to pursue personal passions. And nothing was accomplished, this is the hidden danger of all utopian societies. So what is the danger for gems that are immortal if they are left alone to just exist? Well, the Lunarians do not let them do that. It’s just a thought I had. It’s a humans yearning for utopia yet we fuck it up every time because we also love conflict. Without pressure, a bone does not become stronger! Thanks again for reading to us, all these last volumes are my favorite! Just want to leave you with a David Bowie song that many think is about this book. Well, it’s probably about a lot of things but the lyrics fit the story so well, I often think of it being about Childhood’s End. https://youtu.be/IBgU0tiLy2s?si=AUQfrKYfVJ-G5UbO
