Jurassic Park (1993): Movie Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

One of my favorite quotes!! Laura Dern instilling dark humor does seem to be on point! Hahaha, this movie is so much fun! Thank you for the birthday wishes and requesting such a great movie! OH, I just rewatched Jaws for it’s 50th anniversary and forgot how HORRIFYING it is - truly a scary movie that holds up as well! I need to go back and read the book more to fully know for sure if I stand with that claim, still. Honestly, I feel the algorithm on YouTube is against me always, so what could it hurt! Hahaha!! The characters and the actors playing them are so great and the set up of this movie is fantastic! Everything does feel so real in the movie! And yeah, even in Jaws, the spotlight fetish is there! Hahaha!! HAHAHA that note about power, control, and raptors could not be more true. RIP Samuel L. Jackson’s character. T-T I can’t remember the jumping into a pool part, I know there IS a pool scene in Jurassic Park 2, but I don’t think that one involves rooftop running. And sleep paralysis is TERRIFYING, so agree with that one. I feel the child age swap worked really well in this. Not that it was too much of an age difference, in all honesty. That electric fence scene was so scary and still gets me antsy watching it! And then the kitchen scene right after it? Nooooo…. I definitely loved the 2nd Jurassic Park as a kid – but know as an adult it has its flaws - I definitely would watch all the others as fun popcorn movies if I get to them! 😀I’m sure there’s still good commentary to go with them! And yes, I couldn’t believe my classmate got that role! Thank you for the comment and kind words and the commission! This was so much fun to revisit!

Themes of resistance once again, haha, yes! The MPAA / rating system back in the 80s/90s was really crazy, you could get away with way more in a PG movie those days.

"Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth" If I think back now, maybe it was Laura Dern and not Nickelodeon or Looney Tunes, who I can credit for instilling the dark humor I love so much. "Welcome to Jurassic Park" 🎶🎵 Dun dun; Dun, dun... 🎶🎵 that overture! Half the battle back then was just getting a score by John Williams or Danny Elfman! Spared no expense! *Drinks shot* Not a bad drinking game! Happy belated birthday!! 🎂 Jurassic Park is timeless, perhaps not literally perfect, but damn close, a true classic and one of my favorites. I was thrilled to show it to my daughter a few years back - but I can't say it was quite as far back as first grade! Damn! That's so wild - I kinda wish my teachers instilled the fear of God in us with movies like Jurassic Park, maybe try a little Jaws before a trip to the aquarium; or bring in a class pet spider followed by Arachnophobia - only to have the spider go "missing" from the cage the following week! Yeah, maybe it's best my creativity isn't used towards teaching! Look at you - not even 30 seconds in the opening and bringing the FIRE! Movie > Book! Hahaha, I love it!! Get that war going! You're so right though, as someone who loved the book, I'll agree it doesn't compare to the movie for me either! I always wonder how it goes when content creators dip in to stuff they don't normally do - I've heard things like it can affect the algorithms negatively, but hey, I follow a number of people regularly on Patreon and a good half of them do very, VERY mixed content and I love it. Anime mixed with reality shows, movies - old ones like Star Wars to LOTR to Marvel to horror to regular cartoon network shows, all kinds of stuff besides just anime! So, I'm very glad you aren't literally anime only! Back to the movie, that opening on Isla Nublar - it sets the stage so well, grabs you right in with the horror of what is in the box, and I'm sure shut the audience right up in theaters. The main duo - Sam Neill and Laura Dern have such great chemistry and charisma on screen, they captivated me right from the start! Grant channeling that Indy look to him a bit doesn't hurt either! And Jeff Goldblum! Yes! Now that you mention it - it is ironic the raptor speech is about male raptors when in the park they're female! Nice catch! The first sight of the dinosaurs after landing in Jurassic Park feels so great, jaws dropping! And they did a really nice job at set design making the park feel so real. They really do set it all up so well at the beginning with everything coming back in to play much later on - was fun to see a lot of it pointed out in the reaction! I never really noticed the whole spotlight fetish before either, but it is there, for sure! So, see if you agree, but I think the most important lesson of Jurassic Park 1 - is not that power and control are the illusion, but rather, power control should never be located directly next to the raptor pen. Right?! 😂 As to why Samuel L. Jackson didn't get a gun, one theory could be perhaps if he had there would not have been any JP sequels haha. I can't completely remember, but I think there's a JP where they're running away on the roof of a building and have to jump into a pool? Maybe not exactly, but I'll never forget my younger self's recurring nightmares - one of which is living that scenario on the roof chased by raptors. Then getting killed by the raptor or jumping off the roof and never making it to the pool, fun times! But hey, any dream with dinosaurs - even if you are being hunted alive, is still a dream with dinosaurs!! 😊 And I'll take nightmares any day over sleep paralysis which is way less fun. I remember one of the differences talked about when the movie came out by the book nerds was the kids ages were flipped - in the books Tim was 11 and Lex was 8, but Steven Spielberg swapped their ages for the movie to have it work with the actors. I always was terrified of the electric fence climbing scene, it was so nerve wracking as a kid, and Tim's ear being all swollen and bloody grossed me out, but it is a weirdly calm break before the final showdowns, and the kitchen hide and seek with the reflection scene gets me every time too, it's so good! The T-Rex being the anti-hero, yes! Good call. I don't remember the other Jurassic Parks as well as the first - was JP2 the one with the bus maybe? JP3 I think had the pterodactyls? JP World movies all have their moments, they deliver some fun times with the advanced CG, but also definitely aren't classics like the original. I think going in with lower expectations you can enjoy them for being action movies, somewhat. Crazy that you were friends with / knew Chris Pratt's stunt double! That sounds wild. Thank you so much for the reaction and discussion! Loved them, and glad you had a fun time with them!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was a really fun one to revisit – and any time really enjoy watching a film where someone loves it so much they can’t help quoting it throughout. 😆 And happy belated birthday! 🥰 I think this was definitely one of those films where 90s adults had trouble knowing whether it was appropriate – it’s just dinosaurs, right? 😆 I think I was about 8-9 when I watched it first and another child was about 5 and we were just left to our own devices. This actually made me interested in looking up its rating, the UK classification board (BBFC) rated it as PG (in the UK this is ‘general viewing with potentially unsuitable scenes for younger children’) on original release and then upgraded the rating to 12A (‘generally not suitable for under-12s, not allowed unless accompanied by an adult’) during the re-classification for the 30th anniversary release. The reclassification was primarily due to ‘sustained’ threat. This is a really interesting case study in terms of how decisions were made and classification has moved on: https://www.bbfc.co.uk/education/case-studies/jurassic-park Absolutely agree that this is one of those films that really holds up - in terms of effects, story telling, beautiful cinematography. Also, themes of resistance… definitely here! 😆 Resistance against attempts at human control over nature, corporate exploitation, biological/instinctive resistance and adaptability, etc. Thank you to L Freya for this commission! 🥰 Cannot wait for next week! 💙
