Romania Reacts: GUNBUSTER! Episode 1 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*TRAINED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

It's time for a new series and the OLDEST I've ever reviewed and reacted to --
-- NOTE: I said 90's in the reaction and most of the discussion; it's 1988, BABY!

Noriko is already such a sweet bean that I'm rooting for and her and Kuzumi are in for an "out of this world" experience, I'm sure! But where will this short series lead us!? We shall seeeee!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

AHAHAHA That is HILARIOUS! I mean, it’s a reaction AND discussion channel, so if you’ve watched my channel, you know I don’t “ignore” but rather bring awareness (the teacher in me) about it to my audience and open up a dialogue about it. Ignoring what offends you is just being complicit, and that’s not my vibe, sorry. But I’m definitely having fun with the series so far! Thank you for the comment!

Oh yeah, the male gaze is….RIGHT THERE. It’s laughable at how obvious it is but it definitely should be fun to talk about in this series! It doesn’t shake my views of the series overall, but you know I’m going to have to talk about it. OOHHHH I had no idea that these weren’t aired on television! Hoooo booy, okay, I’m going to strap myself in, then! Thank you for that information! That’s also hilarious about the parodies! I love Noriko so far! Hahaha and yeah, no one has ever told her to work hard before…lord…the life of a Nepo Baby, am I right?! 😛I joke; I love this bean so far! Ooohhh, I didn’t realize Wakamoto was playing Vicious as well! That’s where I’ve heard that voice! YES! Okay! I honestly hope that I enjoy it - I’ve watched the first two episodes and the 2nd one got me ON BOARD so far! But y’all know if there’s over-the-top male gaze shenanigans, I’m going to point it out, but that aside, I am digging the show so far and can’t wait to see where it goes! Thank you for the comment and I hope you enjoy the reactions and discussion too!

I'm surprised you didn't back out of watching this when you found out it was my favorite anime. Alarm bells should have gone off telling you it was going to be kind of perverted and weird. I was afraid that if that didn't put you off, seeing it was a Gainax show directed by Hideki Anno would have hahaha I'm glad you went through with it though. This is going to be a great reaction series. The fan service drags the series down a few notches, but like you mention, it isn't any more eye-rolling than the dumb scenes from Eva, like Misato bending over the table or Shinji falling on Rei. As far as the target audience, this would have only been for major otakus, so not only men, but basement dwelling nerds of the most stereotypical 80s variety. Like Eva, it obviously went on to appeal to a much larger audience regardless. I think if I wanted to teach someone what the male gaze is, I would show them the last few seconds of the opening where Noriko bends over enough that her ass comes into frame, stands back upright shaking her tits and then it pans out to show her legs, all for no reason. It actually makes me laugh every time. (My attitude towards this when I first watched this at 17 was quite different.) There actually wasn't any product placement here, just straight up trademark infringement. Because these were OVAs, they had to be special ordered and were mailed to people directly on video tape. They were never aired on television. That means they could get away with pretty much anything they wanted. The title is a parody of "Aim for the Ace!" which I think you've seen but I haven't. The original song while she's running is a parody of the theme from "Chariots of Fire" but they had to change it for the US release because they were worried about getting sued. (but they didn't cross out the Pepsi?) I'm sure there are 100 other sports anime/movie jokes that I missed because I don't really watch those. Noriko is both precious and hilarious. She asks Coach how to succeed, he says "Hard work!" and her reaction is like that's the first time she's ever heard that in her life. Wakamoto is a legend, he also played the emperor in Code Geass, Cell in the original DBZ not just Kai, Vicious from Cowboy Bebop, he was the Japanese dub for the doctor from The Human Centipede, and perhaps most terrifyingly, "Father" from Azumanga Daioh. I really hope you love this, but if you hate it that would also be funny. Can't wait for the next reaction!

Toshio "Otaking" Okada, who launched this project, once said about the 'unrealistic' outfit on the cover: The costume is a message that this is a work for Otaku. (So those who find it offensive might not want to watch it.) In any case, ignore the parts you find offensive and have fun.
