Vinland Saga Season 2: Episode 7 Early Access Reaction!

*Headphone Warning*

Things seem to be going Thorfinn and Einar's way with their friendship and Einar's growing relationship with Arnheid. However, the return of Ketil's eldest son, Thorgil, reminds us of the show's themes and just how true it is that "we can't have nice things."

I am loving this season, but it definitely feels like the calm before the storm in this episode! Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

I loved this episode! And man, Ketil is SOMETHING, isn’t he? I have really been fascinated by his character at this point in the story. And I agree, he started out with this seemingly safe, but uneasy vibe and as we’ve gotten to know him, his character has gotten so fleshed out! Seeing how each of these characters view and interact with him is fascinating! And the way he views his own sons is sooooo intriguing, I agree! That is so neat that you phrase it as him “never being free” – I agree – I’ll have to bring that up next episode! Ooohhhh, the Sture/Thora parallel to Ymir is SO good – wow, and relating to Grisha/Faye, too! Nice observations! I think someone in the Discord said the mangaka likes Isayama’s works, so that would make sense! Thank you for the kind words and comment!

This was definitely my favorite episode of the season so far. I had some doubts about Ketil, but after this episode, he may actually be one of my favorite characters. He is introduced into the story as this powerful and wealthy man that owns this massive farm. He is juxtaposed very well with Einar's character, as we meet Ketil immediately after watching Einar have every last bit of freedom and dignity taken away from him. Initially, Ketil is the perfect representation of freedom. But as the season progresses, we start to see what Ketil’s life is really like. Because Ketil has such a huge farm that many people live on, he is incapable of managing every part of it. So as much as he genuinely respects the slaves he bought and wants to help them become free and self-sufficient, Ketil’s retainers do not share that same sentiment and they routinely abuse people like Einar and Thorfinn. Ketil’s son, Olmar, never listens to him and never shows the slightest bit of respect for him. On top of that, the very people Ketil hired to protect his farm almost influenced Olmar to kill 2 of his slaves. Now we have this episode, which allows us to see another side to Ketil’s character. He has an older son, Thorgil, who is a warrior in every way. Thorgil respects his father, but that is only due to the lie of “Iron Fist Ketil” that he seemed to have made up in order to earn respect. Ketil is absolutely terrified of his own son, so much so that he went against his conscience and beat a young thief so as to not show any weakness in front of his Thorgil. And then we finish the episode seeing Ketil broken and crying in the lap of a slave due to shame and him feeling utterly powerless. Despite all the wealth he has gained and the large amount of land that he owns, he has never been truly free. Also, it’s funny that you brought up the parallels between Ketil and Rod Reiss from AOT. I also noticed a few other things in the episode that reminded me of AOT, like when Sture and Thora were kneeling in front of Ketil while he sat in front of that building. I was instantly reminded of Ymir being brought forth in front of King Fritz for freeing a pig from the stables. Also, Sture pleading to also take his sister’s punishment instantly reminded me of Grisha doing the same for his sister, Faye. I found those parallels to be pretty interesting.

I LOVE the friendship that has developed between Thorfinn and Einar this season -- I am not a man, but I do see it as realistic and paced just fine! I'm living for our boy Thorfinn making a friend! Thank you for the comment!

the criticism at the beginning of being too quick to be friends. come on what. there has been a clear time skip from 4 to 6 and from the begging of 6 to 7 there has been another time jump. what they expect lmao. as a male, I see their friendship extremely realistic and they took their time with it. EDIT: In your point of 13:30 about manga readers being happy about this season, I´m a manga reader with vinland. I´m beyond satisfied with the adaptation, on terms of adapting the material its incredible what they have done, there are some skips, there are some things that are not shown, howrever its incredibly minor and its compensated with a very rich storytelling that does takes its time. they are willing to incredibly slow down the pacing if it needs to, for example in episode 4, in the manga its ONE chapter. (considering other episodes are several chapters of the manga, 3-6 its the average), but its because the episode need it, Well without rambling, I´m beyond satisfied with this moments, and I have all the faith they will do a good job eventually when things do get spicy.
