Vinland Saga Season 2: Episode 12 Early Access Reaction!

**EYE-CATCHING HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

I really feel for Olmar in this episode -- he doesn't want to fight, in truth, but the culture he's surrounded by (and his bro) push him to the brink and the point of no return. Well, a mysterious cloaked man didn't help either. The worst part? It was all to give Canute reason to overtake Ketil's Farm.

Thorfinn's "angsty sense" is tingling, Leif's making bets to find Thorfinn, and Canute's diving deeper into his madness with his dead daddy...the sun is setting on the happy times here, aren't they? **nervous laugh**

Vinland Saga Season 2: Episode 12 Early Access Reaction!

**NERVOUS LAUGHTER** Yeah, those callbacks from Snake and Sverkel are really coming to a head here, aren’t they? Yeah, Thorgil definitely knew *something* was up in that whole duel and aftermath of it. Thorgil definitely reminds me of Bjorn and all that the “warriors” we’ve seen in Season 1 represents and it’s very scary, especially with characters like Thorfinn we’ve established throughout this to have a more nuanced understanding of the role violence can play in this culture and world. And poor Olmar…yep…he’s seeing the aftermath of the “war” he wanted to take part in now. That scene of him grabbing his face on the boat is so telling and heartbreaking. That is a great take on Thorgil as a brother, too! I’ll have to talk about that in the discussion for the next episode! YES, I love that characters like Thorgil and Thorkell could SO be one-note characters, but we get a lot more depth with them in this series! But yes, if “THOR” is in their name…maybe stay back a step or two. Is it weird that I got JJK O movie/Star Wars Revenge of the Sith flashbacks with each of them looking at the sunset – ARE CANUTE AND THORFINN PADME AND ANAKIN? Bwahahahaha! But yes, it’s very beautiful. And Canuuuuuuute – what a dramatic bitch, indeed. I just can't get enough of how flamboyant he is, standing on those barracks, by himself, for at least half an hour talking to himself. 😛 I am SO glad that I’ve been able to see this season before diving into the “protagonist” video – I may have to re-organize my thoughts on how to label that one, because Canute is SO aligning himself more in the Eren category than Thorfinn at this point. ^^ I haven’t been keeping up too much with the mangaka’s threads on Twitter – I’ve been staying off recently to avoid spoilers for some other week-to-week series I’ve been watching for the channel, but now that they’re over, I may have to get back on! 🙂 Ahhhh, I love that the mangaka, though, with those lines – is reading to the messages that you, I, and others on Patreon have been talking about – if only the mainstream audience would get that too, right? 😛 I am SO excited for the second cour! OOOOH, at this point, while Einar is the big teddy bear I want to hug, Thorfinn (against all odds compared to S1 hahahaha) and Canute are my favorites of the first cour. For polar opposite reasons - they are such beautiful thematic foils and I am SO EXCITED to see what the mangaka has in store for us with them in this second half! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

I do feel for Olmar; I didn't care for his pompous buffoonery, but he got in way over his head in a society he realized - all too late - he didn't measure up in or want to. It wasn't as glorious as he thought, like you said -- and his pride and ego got the better of him. I definitely felt that expression on the boat that's in the thumbnail. Leif is DEFINITELY lucky, isn't he? I just want him to stay alive long enough to savor that luck and see Thorfinn again! Excited for tomorrow's episode! Thanks for the comment!

“With 70 of Floki’s Jomsviking we’ll have 102 men altogether” - Wulf 2x12 “You could easily take over this farm with 50 to 60 men” - Snake 2x6 “What did I do to deserve that?!” - Ketil 2x13 “Too much wealth brings about misfortune” - Sverkel 2x6 Sorry Ketil, but burying your face in the sand (or in this case a barrel) is not going to work this time. Thorgil really proves how smart he actually is here. He clocks the weirdness of the eye incident. He immediately understands the situation as soon as the guards show up. He has seen dozen of duels over the simplest things that have ended with death and have had no repercussions. “Guys kill each other all the time over woman they can sell” - Thorgil 2x7. The fact that he originally expected no retaliation is honestly quite telling. But the fact that with no fear is genuinely excited for the challenge ahead is quite frankly disturbing. Literally going up against an established conqueror. Thorgil is the embodiment of a ‘Warrior’ in this Viking world and the worst type of person for the Vinland Saga world. Embraces senseless violence and gore with glee. And Olmar finally gets to witness everything he ever wanted and … well you saw him in the aftermath (by the way I adore Olmar and it’s great to get to this point for his character even if it’s horrific for him) What I find fascinating though is the relationship between the brothers, particularly on Thorgil’s side. Thorgil is actually very family focused and genuinely cares about them. Yes, we know about his misguided admiration of his father but everything we have seen of him in 2x11 and 2x12 he seems to really care for his little brother. Notice that he is never cruel to him, doesn’t tease him nor bully him for the pig incident or the duel that he has walked in on. The only thing would have been the necklace of ears back in 2x7 and that honestly is pretty harmless to the shit that we know he would be capable of. He really seems to want the ‘best’ for Olmar, or what he thinks is the best. But what do we end up with? One brother broken and world view shattered and the other proud and ‘sticking up’ for his little brother. That’s the genuis of Yukimura though. Characters like Thorgil and Thorkell could soo easily be one note but have such great depth to them. To be strong in this world isn’t just about strength, you gotta have the smarts too. I think we have all learnt to never fuck with anyone with ‘Thor’ in their name. Also Thorfinn and Canute looking at the same sunset from different directions is just pure CINEMA. The scene is soo beautiful that it’s like they are talking to each other. But honestly the fact that Thorfinn’s spider sense tingles when Canute is doing anything menacing is sending me! 😄 Canute! My guy! How long did you stand on the barracks in the SAME SPOT?! You dramatic bitch! These two have such a chokehold on me that it’s not even funny. Love the discussion over the differences/ similarities and your feelings of Canute and Eren. I remember you having that idea of a protagonist video and I’m soo thankful that you didn’t do it after just watching season one. Including Thorfinn in that video only after the seeing the prologue would be such a disservice. It would be like judging Eren just on season 1’s content. No idea if you are keeping up with Yukimura’s weekly Twitter threads while he watches the episode (you should because they are awesome and no spoilers too) but this week I particularly loved what he had I to say “If you are disrespectied, arm yourself, intimidate, and intimidate people around you so as not to be underestimated. Preserve honour with violence. What an idiot, man. And you don’t realise you’re stupid. There are men who enjoy being evaluated as “scary”. Someone who wants to be told by others, “That person is scary, don’t make them angry.” I don’t know why, isn’t it better to be a person who smiled and is kind and makes people around you feel relaxed? I want to be a kind person. It doesn’t matter if you make fun of it.” I have many many more thoughts but I think I’ll save them for the second cour. Ooo actually I’m curious but do you have a favourite character from this season so far?

Sacha

I dont feel bad for Olmar at all, he keeps acting big about war and wanting to be a warrior, wanting to be a bodyguard for the king but cant even slice a dead, cooked pig in half, i would be laughing too. On the plus side it seems that this little interaction with his brother and the kings men gave him a tiny taste of what he would see in a battlefield and that killing someone wasnt as glorious as he had been thinking all this time not only that but wishing for battler/war only brings disaster and now his farm and his whole family are in the sights of king Canute all because his ego and pride got the better of him. Time to rethink the way you live your life buddy. The hooded man is probably just another person under king Canute but of higher rank than those 5 people he sent to deliver the kings answer otherwise why would they listen to him. Lastly the second best character in the series (Askeladd being first) Leaf the Lucky saving the day, not only he saved Ketil, Olmar and Thorgil he also gets to sell his cargo for TRIPLE its value and he also gets Thorfinn, this guy really lives up to his name. Man Leif really is the best, not only has he been looking for Thorfinn for around 13+ years but he also bought Bug Eyes and adopted him and probably many others across all those years.

OKA
