Attack on Titan: Volume 13 Manga Reaction & Review!

**HEADPHONE WARNING**

I was told early on accident that the start of season 3 is not like the anime, but I didn't and don't want any further info (because spoilers, duh), but so far, HOLY SMOKES -- even the same content as the anime, presented in an alternate format, is showing us Eren, Historia, and the events of this arc in a whole new light and it's CRAZY GOOD!

My jaw was on the floor for a lot of this volume and I was SPEECHLESS with the artwork Isayama gives us, especially of Eren! Y'ALL. What a volume.

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Attack on Titan: Volume 13 Manga Reaction & Review!

Comments

Ahhh, I'm not sure if it was Rico in the beginning! But I agree; there could have EASILY been that one panel insert to show Eren thinking of the Levi Squad and then it going back to them in the present; it would have added SO MUCH! And I agree; even if Erwin ad the Survey Corps hadn't started the mutiny, someone likely would have -- the catalyst just happened sooner maybe than expected! I love that at least I get to see all the added material in this volume that was left out of the anime! Thanks for the comment!

That seems so silly in hindsight, because post basement, yeah, we get titans but there's so much just with the characters and the plot resembles what is missing from the anime in the manga here...*sigh* sometimes, the fan base and their lack of taste in what the mangaka is putting out there is sad. But that's just my opinion! Thanks for the comment!

WIT only had time for 12 episodes, and this part was somewhat controversial at the time. Some readers lost interest because of the lack of titans and titan fighting for many chapters, so Isayama gave them the go-ahead for cutting material and getting to the action more quickly.

I skimmed the comments before watching so i knew things were gonna be different from the Anime but oh boy were things different. I don't know why the anime changed so much, time constraints? budget? but lots of great stuff was left out. And i agree, the panel of Eren thinking about Levi squad was very impactful and could have easily been made as a single panel insert in the anime. Also, was that Rico in the beginning? Still technically from season 2 but a later spotting of her than we get in the Anime (if i remember correctly atleast). The Manga also much better showed how desperate everything is inside the walls and that "things" are brewing, if the Survey corps hadn't started a mutiny someone else probably would have.

That’s a really good note about Historia – it’s hilariously ironic that Eren talks about how he “likes” her better this way – we know what he means, in liking her being true to herself, but it is hilarious that he likes her empty and detached from the 104th, when we’ll see Eren VERY similar to this later on in season 4 – I’ll have to talk about that in the next discussion! That is a VERY good line from Eren that I want to bring up in the next discussion and helps to establish his mindset going into later seasons. I do feel for all the cut Levi content! They really helped to make more of his character! And I love the political set up of this volume and how it sets the stage for Pixis and Erwin later on - maybe it wouldn’t have been “such” a fun surprise knowing they’d had these talks for the audience before the coup, but I definitely think it adds a richness to the whole plot point. And yessssss, I can’t remember if I discussed it in the anime, but it makes all the more sense now that they wanted the Eren sacrifice for a long time coming now. Oof. Thank you so much for the detailed comments throughout this! I appreciate it!

Thank you! I know at some point in the anime, we get flashbacks of Erwin and Nial's past and the knowledge about Maria -- it may be later in this season, but I'll definitely check, too! :D Thanks!

Romaniablack

Went back to make sure and they do include a line of Erwin saying "Remember when we trained to join the Survey Corps together". I imagine that and the other scenes when Marie is mentioned allow anime watchers to put the pieces together.

That's so weird, because I distinctly remember seeing it in the anime and talking about it in the discussions; I'll keep an eye out for it when I re-watch, though! Thanks!

The anime keeps in the bit of Erwin asking Nile about choosing hope or despair and who to trust. But all their talk about Pastor Nick, the interior police, Marie, why Nile chose the Military Police and how Erwin was also into Marie was cut.

Doccyy

I'll definitely have to bring that list up in a future discussion! For some reason, I felt the talk with Nile and Erwin was brought up later in the anime, so I can't say it was "cut" but re-contextualized for later, but we'll see what we get; I have a feeling I'm going to be re-watching the anime for season 3 part 1 soon hahaha -- I'll get to your other comment, soon! :D

1. Besides these outright cuts practically every scene from this volume that did make it into the anime had the dialogue considerably shortened. For example, Eren’s talk with Historia. In the anime we barely get any elaboration on how Historia is any different from Christa besides her saying that she’s no longer a good girl. Whereas in the manga we see just how empty and vacant Historia’s true personality is, Eren’s dumbfounded expression when he asks her if she feels worried for Armin who’s risking his life by being her body double, to which she responds saying she doesn’t see why she should. Showing little concern for a supposed friend she’s spent the past 3 years in military training with. Isayama shows through both her demeanour and her interactions how detached she is from the rest of the 104th now whereas when she was Christa she was one of the chattiest who was always worrying about everyone in practically every scene she was in. 2. “We both live in this absurd world where if we don’t do something, we’ll lose everything. We don’t have time to feel conflicted.” A great line from Eren that didn’t make it into the anime, perfectly sums up his post-timeskip mindset after discovering he’s only got a few years left to live. He hasn’t got time to consider all the options or bet on unsure possibilities like Armin and Hanji want to. He has to act quickly or lose everything. 3. I think Levi is definitely the character that gets hit the hardest by the cuts in this volume. So much of his heavy dialogue scenes like his talk with Eren about freedom and his talk with Reeves about making a choice to save his people. Both are entirely erased. Along with smaller things like Levi realising Hanji is affected by Nick’s death and that it’s made her timid. Plus, his great humour like how he mocks Erwin for being pitiful, and his great line about him just being an asshole for blaming Eren and that “going over our shortcomings and bitching about our situation is an important ritual” an absolutely iconic quote lol! 4. I love how in the very first chapter of this arc Isayama sets up the conflict that ends up toppling the royal government, that issue being increasing civil rest as a result of the terriotority they’re losing each times the walls are breached. Pixis and Erwin in particular are the characters that talk about it in that chapter, and of course later on they use this exact issue as the basis for their coup de tat plans where they fake that the walls have been breached again and see how the fake king and his council reacts, whether they’ll help the citizens of the outer-walls or close of the inner wall to them and leave them to their doom. 5. It’s brought up in Levi and Hanji’s conversation in this volume that the interior police has been after Eren ever since his powers were revealed in Trost. Which is why Nile and the Military Police was so desperate to get their hands on Eren back during the trial in the courtroom in season 1, because they had received orders from the interior police to get their hands on him. Nile thought it was to just execute him but of course the true reason was so they could take him to Rod and the Reiss cave so that Historia could inherit it and reset the status quo with the Founding Titan back in the royal family’s possession.

Ahhhh we’re finally here. You can see just from this volume how differently Isayama handles the beginning of this arc from the anime. A whole volume without Kenny besides his nameless appearance in Historia’s backstory, whereas the anime dived straight into the action with him. This whole volume was carefully built-up political drama along with great character moments. Just wanna take note of all the notable things that didn’t make it into the anime from this volume. 1. That whole scene on the wall after they get back with Eren apologising to Mikasa after her ribs were crushed by a titan trying to save him. Historia pleading Eren to go save Ymir and having an emotional breakdown over it. CUT! 2. Erwin, Levi and Pixis’ banter in the hospital room. Erwin reflecting on all the soldiers he led to their deaths and saying he’ll only be able to make up for it once he goes to hell. CUT! 3. Connie visiting his titanized mother and his breakdown over realizing his whole family is gone. CUT! 4. Eren reflecting on the deaths of the OG Levi squad CUT! 5. The Levi’s squad whole talk about the political chaos in the walls and planning what they should do going forward. CUT! 6. Historia telling Connie Ymir was distracting him so he wouldn’t worry about his mother. CUT! 7. The boys throwing rocks at kid Historia. CUT! 8. The entire aftermath of Eren’s titan experiments with him building the house, his 3 separate transformations, having a mental episode over what his father did to him. Levi’s humour talk about him being an asshole and then his speech to Eren about freedom being outside the walls. Eren wondering where his father is and then seeing memories of Freida. CUT! 9. Erwin and Nile’s talk about their days in the training regimen. How they both planned to join the Survey Corps, how they both took different paths in life with Nile choosing Marie and safety in the Military Police to raise a family and Erwin prioritizing his childhood dream. CUT! 10. Levi’s whole interactions with the struggling citizens of Trost and him seeing the impoverished mother holding her child (probably reminds him of Kuchel) CUT! 11. Pretty much Levi and Dimo Reeves entire talk on the wall and the deal they make. CUT! with only footnotes kept in the anime.
