This was a very sad episode, but still LOTS to talk about!

I definitely love that there is more with LQQ’s backstory here, the Golden Banquet, and Xie Lian’s time as the Guoshi! It was so short in the book and I appreciate the added content, here! It also adds to Xie Lian’s pain as well when we get to see more of the Yong-An family as a whole and how they act around An Le. I WONDERED if the ghosts following Qi Rong were the same ones in the episode – I think I brought that up in the discussion, but I have that same headcanon! 🙂 I still would have hated to have seen that flashback with the parents at this point. The novel reveal had me in tears because of how powerful that moment was, and to have it shown here…I wouldn’t have been in tears when I got to it in the novel, because I’d be like, “Yep. There’s the moment.” And I would have expected it. But if others liked it, that’s fine! And I’m sure most reactors if they’re NOT novel readers won’t think anything of it, but if we do get the moment from the donghua animated, it would spoil it for them. But who knows! Hopefully it won’t ruin their experience! The wait for Season 3 is definitely going to be a LOT. That’s for sure! I’m very curious how they end this season! I really would like them to NOT do things out of order from the novel to the donghua – I think MXTX sets it up really well and to alter that would be a mistake. OHHHHH, but yesssss, the last of the butterflies healing Xie Lian? CANNOT. HEART CANNOT TAKE IT! UGH. *curls into fetal position in floor* I love HuaLian so much as well. Getting to actually see it play out instead of being told is so delicious. I love that they gave more political context to the Xianle/Yong'an conflict a few hundred years after that original one, and who exactly is being affected. It seems like most of the common folk, especially in the reign of Lang Qianqiu's parents, aren't necessarily hostile with the royal family - that Xianle girl even creates jewellery for the Queen! But it's a noble like Anle who can't stand that he's being condescended to, whether that be in a hostile way from the royal relatives or in a 'mocking' way like he and Qi Rong perceive it from the King and Queen. They can't stand that Anle has his status by the "kindness" of the Yong'ans royal family giving it them when in their mind, the Yong'ans are usurpers and it's already theirs! So of course Xie Lian is so mad about the concept of the common people suffering for a noble's actions 😔 I have always loved characters who are put in situations where there's no easy or 'right' thing to do in order to save people. No wonder he's my favourite ❤️ This is just a head canon, but i wonder if those lackeys who committed the Gilded feast murders are the same ghosts who follow qi rong now, they've just got a makeover! I know it's controversial, and I can see why people don't like it, but i don't mind the quick flash of Xie Lian's parents. It gives a shock to book readers who know what's up, but doesn't give tooooo much away to people who haven't. After all, we readers know the context of Xie Lian's parents, his demotion, and what happens directly before and after that, ah, moment. And we also know how they die, but like you said, for someone with no context, they might imagine his parents were executed by yong'an, which would fit in the context of the flashback. I also watch a reactor who hasn't read the book and he didn't notice anything! To me it gives some momentem to the hopefully upcoming s3 too (just like the red flower in the OP!) Or perhaps they are going to change the format and do all of the flashback at once in one season for s3 🤔(not sure how i feel about that tho). Regardless, i hope they confirm S3 soon 😭😭 It's going to be agony having to wait. I'm torn as well between wanting the season to end on the sword coming down and wanting an opening into Book 2. At least next ep is in just half an hour as I'm writing this 😅 To add to that comment and analysis about Hua Cheng always healing Xie Lian when he had the opportunity, it reminds me of that moment in the recent chapters you read where Hua Cheng, literally about to uhhh fade away, uses his last spiritual butterflies to heal the cuts and and bruises on Xie Lian 😭😭😭 my hearrrtt i love hualian. As always, love your reaction and analysis and can't wait till next week!
