Frieren: Beyond Journey's End! Episode 10 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 **POWERFUL HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

This episode was beautifully animated, subtle, emotional, and again - subverts what we expect for Frieren and her battle against Aura!

There's so much to talk about and discuss in this episode and I am excited to hear what you all think as well about our "powerful mages" Flamme, Frieren, and Fern -- which I'm now realizing are all "F" names, hahaha! LET'S GO!

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End! Episode 10 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Flamme is such a warm presence (so pun intended), and I love that she was the one to save Frieren. Also, YES, we could maybe predict how the battle with the scales would end up - but the way it was done was so well done! :D And YES, Frieren is definitely theatrical as well with her final words to Aura! Exactly! She ain't looking at that explosion! And yeah, the smiley face is such an odd choice at this point, isn't it? @-@ The sussing out cycle of Flamme to Frieren, Frieren to Himmel, and now Frieren to the future generation. I think that the idea that Flamme didn't introduce magic perhaps to humanity but popularized and advanced it for society even if it had been around for longer than that...and the commentary with this series on history and how time changs how we remember things is...worth noting, too! Thank you for the comment! I'll probably watch Episode 16 before getting to your recent comments, but I'm excited to see what you say about the episodes leading up to it!

Frieren can be one stone cold m**********r when she wants to. Ever since those scales were first introduced we all knew what would happen, still, the show made it interesting and impactful in the ways it worked up to it. And who doesn't love Flamme? Seems Frieren got kidnapped by the right master. There is a lot of talk about the demons being arrogant and showing off, but let us be honest, Frieren is very theatrical in her interactions with demons, cool mages doesn't look at exp... forced suicides and all that. I was gonna put a smiley here... but that felt wrong after that last sentence. "Just a feeling". Flamme knew Frieren was special when she sussed out she was powerful and Frieren herself knew Himmel was special when he sussed her out, love it. This episodes seems to put to rest the idea that Flamme introduced magic to humanity. Frieren thought nothing about seeing a (powerful) human mage and Flamme says she got thought spells by her parents. So perhaps it isn't that literal and more means she popularized magic or advanced in ways that transformed how it was used in society. Or perhaps it's just all fairy tales at this point and humans had used magic for thousands of years before Flamme.

Ooohhhh, that’s such a good point about Lugner’s line about geniuses since Frieren is a prime example of maximum effort! Yes! I love that! And yes, knowing that Frieren took Flamme’s words to heart to stay hidden, develop her magic, and to not stand out – it really adds another layer to her! It does make me wonder if she interacted with anyone else between Flamme and Himmel - they likely passed and she didn’t think much about it, but it is a great question to ponder that maybe down the line we’ll see an answer to! And it being a defense mechanism to avoid the pain of loss by sticking to isolation? Can SO see that as well! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Romaniablack

Yes, I wasn't sure how the "magic" can extend to controlling bodies once they're dead (meaning that they stay in her control even after being beheaded) so that is good to know! Thank you so much for the comment and that information! :D

Romaniablack

Oh yeah, I agree – like I said in the discussion, the tie back to the swing makes all the sense, now. 🙂 Thank you for the translation as well for Basalt! That’s cool – thanks for the kind words and comment!

It is interesting - plus, the demons in this narrative are literally animals that look and talk like humans; it's not like anime where it's two groups of actual humans fighting and one is "called" demons by the other side. No, these are not humans in this case - they just look it to create complicated feelings and it's effective, so it's a nice plot device and twists it in a new way -- like if the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park looked like people. :) Thanks for the comment!

I loooooved the designs of the generals that faced Flamme and agreed – the unexpected but beautiful way that Frieren “handled” Aura was perfect for her character and I loved the build up to it with the backstory as well! I didn’t feel cheated at all; it all felt very artistic and intentional! And yes! I mentioned it just briefly in the discord and in one episode intro but I love that Frieren “inherited” her earrings from Flamme! I love that! And that connection with the field of flowers to Himmel’s reaction when she enacted the spell for him! That “ripple effect” is so well done and I love it! Well said! Thank you for the kind words and the comment!

I love that Frieren's attitude and mannerisms with how she interacts and feels is connected to that 24/7 mana suppression! That's a great point! Thank you for the comment!

I love how much we can revisit now that we've learned about Frieren's past. First, Lugner's line about despising geniuses since they "lack the beauty of accumulated effort" becomes quite ironic as Frieren is the ultimate example of doing such. For around 1,000 years she has been honing such a fundamental and basic aspect of magic that any mage could improve (albeit at different rates, as talent is a factor), not something exclusive to geniuses. I also really like how this gives us so much context in understanding Frieren as a character. Initially I had assumed she was so cold and distant due to her vastly different perception of time and also perhaps growing numb/used to outliving her comrades throughout the years. However, it's not only her different perception of time and it had nothing to do with my second speculation that explain how Frieren came to be who she is; Flamme's strategic advice to live in obscurity until becoming strong enough to defeat the Demon King adds so much context. While I don't know Frieren's age when her village was attacked, it seems that the relationships she had there and the one she develops with Flamme were really the only meaningful ones in her life up until that point. Then, she lives hundreds, if not around 1,000 years alone without any meaningful interactions or relationships. So of course, when she is then recruited by Himmel and his party, she isn't going to fully appreciate or understand the importance of her "mere" 10 year journey with them right away. I think the rapid shots we get of that journey which flash by in a mere second or two is a way to represent how Frieren perceived that journey. So it's not just her perception that is different, she didn't have much experience with meaningful relationships to begin with. Plus, I can't imagine being able to easily change a mindset you've grown accustomed to having after 1,000 years of solitude. Lastly, this is more speculation, but it would be very painful to try and live in the moment more after all those years alone, as it could remind her of the significance and pain of losing her family and Flamme, a defense mechanism perhaps.

How fitting Aura chooses to fulfill Frieren's open-ended order of "kill yourself" to the best of her own title. In the prior episode it was discussed if you possessed strong enough willpower you could resist the Scales of Obedience - and that is what lead Aura to getting the name Aura the Guillotine. In order to avoid the chance of anyone turning on her after using the scales on them, Aura decapitates them to secure their eternal servitude in her army.

Remember how Frieren said in episode 7, when she was asked about elves, she said "we might be closer to the end than I thought" with a flash of a burning house and swing. She probably was reminded how her race is dying off faster and how her village was destroyed. I think now with this new information, when Frieren said she was used to hear her Master begging for her life, I believe it's in moments where Flamme pretends to be weak before demons. 'Basalt' the Throne - a type of black rock that comes from a volcano (ironic name, considering he burned down Frieren's Vilage) Auserlese (Aura's signature Magic) - something along the lines of an excellent choice or being chosen Loved the discussion and reaction, looking forward to next week!

No wonder Frieren's so lazy and slow to help: Mana suppression 24/7 for a millennia must be exhausting & getting a reputation of being helpful? it's literally against her training.

Thank you! Interesting how differently people see daemons in our world. As daemon-aliens from peaceful country and daemon-humans from country at war

I think this ED might be my favorite in all anime, beautiful and sort of mean too. On a similar note, FMA:B's melancholy ED lyrics "Let it all out... let it all out" can be just as brutally hard hitting at times. But they lose points for taking out the scene of Winry's dog typing on the typewriter with its automail leg, that is probably the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I been really looking forward to you reaching this epsiode. There is so much interesting back story covered in this one. It surprised me a little too with how they handled the episode where Frieren and Aura finally face each other. But it was a surprise in the ebst possible way. The animation gets me too, like you mentioned the three generals who faced Flamme, they were in the show for like a minute yet they were memorable and so well crafted. I think they balanced the the flashbacks and current time so well. And, although the actual end of the fight is so short, it doesn't leave you feeling cheated in any way. Instead, you feel that it fits the story and the world they have crafted so well. I have to say that I love how cold Frieren is when she jsut turns away and says "Kill yourself". They showed the blurry Frieren walking away, the last image Aura would ever see. Now, justa little fun thing. I can't remember if you have mentioned it or noticed it, but have you looked at Flamme's Earrings and Frieren's earrings in the current day.? It was this epsiode where I noticed that they were nearly identical. One last little thing, I love that Flamme was the one who taught her the spell creating the field of flowers. Again, it shows how something little or small can have a long lasting imapct in someone's life. That is a great theme in Frieren by this epsiode and even before it. The imact that a person's life can make and how those " ripples in the pond" keep going even a 1000 years after the "stone' that caused them is long gone.
