BERSERK: Volume 11 Manga Reaction!

This volume was...INSANE...just like Volume 10, we're going "off script" from the 1997 anime and in the WYLDEST way! Wyld is...disgusting, but that's intentional I am SURE. I had no idea what this battle would be like and there was no way for me to anticipate the "involvement" of those that get roped in!
Oh...and there's maybe an eclipse or something about to happen...no big deal.

I would definitely agree with you on the takes of what is probably not done in the…best way…with depicting SA and gore — I know that it can be used as a plot device; my bigger issue - and I’ll address it in a more recent volume is HOW Miura draws it - the lack of the victim’s POV (unless it’s Guts of course because he’s our MC) and a fetishizing of the female body where it’s not presenting SA as a horrific act, but rather as porn - where we don’t feel truly horrified by what we’re seeing when it’s still a “sexy” body getting assaulted. My concern is that these volumes sell out in a way that is not what should be intended by Miura. Thanks for the comment! :)

2024-04-03 16:52:48 +0000 UTCThe majority of fans do not like Wyald in terms of story writing. For me, there was only two areas of the Manga I disagreed with the direction Miura took. First is the king assaulting his daughter. And the second is Wyald. And I have heard that even Miura has acknowledged the mistake. Its too much evil without any significant depth. So it does come off as simply edgy horror. I don't have any issues with stories depicting gore, SA and other things. But there needs to be a reason and it should add to the story. By the way, Wyald and those women at the beginning was not consensual. It was either the women put on an act for the demonic pleasure of Wyald or die. I also didn't like that Casca became exposed over the course of the battle. It was pointless and I felt like it was disrespectful to Casca. How do you feel about how Berserk presents evil? Everywhere else, evil is violent, selfish, power hungry, etc. But Berserk presents evil in three unique ways. First it shows how everyone is connected to evil. The pursuit of a dream is depicted as something everyone values. Yet its clear that pursuing a dream requires sacrifice. And Berserk is very clear how sacrificing for your dream is a small step away from evil. Secondly, Berserk adds SA as an element of evil. No other story seems to do this. Maybe because they are too afraid of touching that topic? None the less, Berserk seems to have a more complete depiction of evil by including SA. And finally, Berserk depicts evil as something that is not always obvious. It fools people. People are drawn to it. People even believe it to be angelic, honorable, patriotic, beautiful, etc. But actually, this side of evil has been explored many times in other stories.

I'll talk about it in a later volume as to one reason we have Wyld's battle at all, but no matter how we got here...Griffith's betrayal still HITS HARD. Thank you for the comment!

2024-03-24 14:48:06 +0000 UTCI hate the volume for all the obvious reasons, but also because it kind of takes the wind out of the eclipse. I think that is one thing the anime did better. None of regular members of the band of the hawk saw the fight with Zodd and none of this ever happened in the anime, so when the eclipse starts it's the first time any of them realized demons actually existed. I think that's a lot more terrifying, it hits harder that Griffith has really betrayed their trust in him.
