Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Episode 3 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Thank you for the comment and kind words – yes – THE episode for sure! I’m so glad you got the chance to watch this unspoiled as well – what a crazy ride! Oohhh, that is good to know that Madoka suggested the Kamijo-kun line for the wish…look at me finding any way to point blame at this demonic cat creature! XD I agree, though; I feel for Mami as well – she had a lot against her from the start and she was just a kid. Her dilemma and choice to ultimately try and persuade Madoka is so telling and so warranting discussion; I agree. I’m definitely eager to break down future episodes because I think it’s going to bring up more issues like this – joy! *nervous laughter*

Ooh, that’s interesting to know about the CD! Thank you! And Madoka’s VA is so cool! Thank you for that information about her, too! 😀AHHHH, so those remains WERE Mami. Lovely. And oooohhh, the tea cup and ribbon being the shattered teacup and blood…dang! That all makes sense now; thank you for clarifying that and for the comment!

Romaniablack

I'm so glad the weekend has Frieren and Madoka back to back -- but yes, this show is genius for making me think one thing and then giving me the opposite! Nooooo, Kyubey does not have my trust AT. ALL. Nope. Here's the thing, and I'll say it in a future intro - but say what you will - Luna was 1.) Pretty transparent about the powers Serena was getting and was NOT offering to give any miracles in exchange for her to endlessly fight the Negaverse. 2.) She was not pitting Serena against other scouts and there wasn't this "territory" nonsense, and 3.) Luna wasn't a creepy Lovecraftian-meets-Hello-Kitty nightmare...so....yeah, that's it! :P Thanks so much for the comment -- if I'm proven wrong on Kyubey, all I can say to the show is: Prove me Wrong! ;)

Romaniablack

Right?! It's almost like the ending song is mocking us -- like we expect this cutesy moment and it instantly reminds us what it's doing! Great way to describe it; thank you for the comment!

Great reaction and discussion!! And finally!! The episodeTM!! I had the pleasure of watching this episode unspoiled so my jaw dropped all the way down when I first saw it. Mami death scene shocked me so much! It really broke all my expectations of this anime. Also, one correction! It wasn't Kyuubey who said "You mean Kamijo-kun" in that scene where they talked about if their wishes could be for another person! It was Madoka! She was the one who asked if it was Kamijo, Kyubey was just staring at Sayaka and not saying anything. I feel so sorry for Mami. She was all alone for god knows how long, a child that was exploited in her most vulnerable moment. Literally when her only options were death or making a deal with Kyuubey. She was just far too young to already have those sort of hardships to deal with. And the eternal conflict she must have within her to want companionship in her suffering vs not wanting another girl to suffer the same as her. It is shown so clearly that those two desires battle within her if you look at her actions. Her saying that being a magical girl is very dangerous (she doesn't want them to be in danger) vs her taking Sayaka and Madoka on her quests anyways (her being lonely and probably feeling like she alone shoulders the weight of the world). Also the fact that she says she doesn't want them to become like her, but as soon as Madoka says she will become a magical girl with her (even after Mami warned her of all those things), she very easily accepts Madoka's decision because it means someone will be there for her. The struggle of not wanting anyone to suffer like her vs the wish for someone who will understand what she is going through because they experienced the same circumstances.... That very much reminds me of person with trauma reaching out to people who suffered the same way they did to feel like they are not alone and to feel the comfort of having someone else who understands what they went through to talk to.

Ohhh I had never thought of Jujutsu Kaisen being influenced by Madoka Magica, but it is clearly not impossible. Akutami seems like a very learned and cultured person and he's already made clear referrences to many *many* other genres (mechas, slice of life, other shonens, and more in the manga). I mean I forget if I had mentionned it at the time, but he's literally the guy who in the manga made a bonus page to explain how the random Grasshopper Curse he had created that lasted 2 chapters was inspired by like 2 scientific books about Grasshoppers he had read. So honestly ? I'm gonna start looking for more Madoka/ magical girl referrences or tropes in JJK now xDDD.

The CD is one of David Oistrakh, he's a very very very famous violinist (or at least famous for the world of classical music xD). He died in 1974, but fortunately a lot of recordings of him are still available. In the CD he's playing Rachmaninoff's Vocalise op.34 n.14. You can find the interpretation by David Oistrakh on youtube if you want. Since you mentionned voice actors at the beginning here I go xD : Madoka's voice actress is Aoi Yuuki, and she is my absolute favorite Seiyuu. She has an unimaginable range. My personal favorite role of hers is in "Saga of Tanya the Evil", where she plays a total polar opposite to Madoka character-wise, and it is absolutely stunning (in both senses). And she's also my favorite japanese VA because she's also a great singer, and sings for several of the animes she's been in (in Tanya, in the spider isekai -yes that's a thing xD, and also in "Symphogear" also I haven't watched it). As for the other characters we've seen (Sayaka, Homura, Mami), I don't know their VAs as well but I know they all delivered perfect performances for this anime. Unrelated "Fun" fact on Mami's death scene : What falls on the table next to Homura after the witch's death is Mami's remains, hence Homura's face as she looks at it. Similarly you've seen before that Mami catches a teacup after each hunt, but this time no one is here to catch the teacup that then gets shattered by the witch's grief seed. Final haunting visual is Mami's red ribbon that she used to capture Homura turned into liquid (representing blood) in Homura's hand.

Makes my day to listen to your reactions on this series and Frieren from yesterday, so spoiled! I liked how you describe yourself as having your reaction discussion all planned out in your head and that the episode just totally threw it all away. Poor Kyubey, three episodes now, and he doesn't get a lick of trust from you! The quickness which you describe yourself turning the other way and running from him in various manners gets me every time. I wonder if you'd still trust Luna these days or if it's a just Krubey thing and not magical talking cats in general!

Omg! Saw that thumbnail and was like 😭

"-Chiwa Saito (Homura's VA) was the only one who failed to see Mami's death flags. She was also surprised to learn that she was the only one who didn't see Mami's death coming." Really? If that's the case I find it funny she's playing a bitter and cynical character in the show but in real life she was the one innocent enough not to see it coming while all the other voice actresses including Madoka's were like 'yep, I saw that coming.' And yeah, poor Mami, she had such a shitty deal in life, lose your family and nearly die in a car accident, only for kubey to give you a deal you really can't refuse and it's all just living to fight from then on while living such a lonely existence. At least she felt happy knowing she had found friendship at the end. But that makes me wonder, did she die because she couldn't defeat the witch and was taken by surprise or if her wish was 'I don't want to die' because she was afraid, and at the end she was saying to herself 'I'm not afraid of anything anymore', maybe she thought 'I'm as happy as I'm gonna be so maybe this is a good point to call it a day'. Finally about that chair, that one I definitely know, it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (a.1stdibscdn.com/frank-lloyd-wright-robie-chairs-for-cassina-1986-set-of-2-for-sale-picture-2/f_37563/f_344284621684923621605/IMG_0051_master.jpg), in fact the whole hospital room has the vibe of one of his interiors with a little art nouveau thrown in. These kids are in a very bougie environment.

We are finally here. Episode 3, THE episode of Madoka Poor poor Mami. Despite the limited screen time she has in the show, she is such a fascinating and realistic character. She is always so graceful, her apartment looks perfect, and she fights witches so easily. And now in this episode she admitted that is a front that she put up. She looked so so so young in the car accident scene, she lives alone because everyone around her was probably dead, and has to fight these dangerous creatures without telling anyone. I would cling to potential friends too if I were her. She said in this episode that this is the first time she feels happy when she fights, so what did she feel before? And imagine the first time you feel happy is right before you die... The tone of the show, the way Kyubey acts and the way Mami fights lure the audience into a false sense of security. Mami did said multiple times that this job is dangerous and you have to risk your life. You suspected a lot more than many people who watched the show at the time it aired, but still could not expect they would straight up kill off an important character. Magical girls in other shows has to face life-and-death situations too, but we never worry about them actually dying like this. Just like Madoka and Sayaka keep hearing about the danger but do not take it seriously enough until Mami dies in front of them. More fun facts: - Chiwa Saito (Homura's VA) was the only one who failed to see Mami's death flags. She was also surprised to learn that she was the only one who didn't see Mami's death coming. - The ending song you watched in episode 1 and 2 was not there originally. The TV broadcasts of the first two episodes aired without endings to conceal the dark tone of the new ending song in ep 3.

Pancake

This ending song and visual change is so creepy, everytime it hits, we start the anime with a cute ending and then the anime punch us in the face with the twist and play the real ending.
