I realize I may have become very protective of Rei over this series so far, so can I say I have never wanted to protect him more than I have in this episode!
Just as we're getting happy events in this episode and Rei possibly making progress, who happens to show up but Rei's "foster sister" Kyouko, and OH BOY -- I have not had a character rub me the wrong way more faster than her! Leave our boy Rei alone! BEGONE!

Kyoko is definitely a polarizing character -- I feel I'm going to have a "Floch" type of reaction with her -- appreciate the writing of her character, but loathe her interactions with the other characters because she "gets away" with her toxicity because of the nepotism of being related to a professional Shogi player and because she's "pretty," which is sadly a reflection of how so many toxic people get away with things in the real world. Same, I've dealt with Kyoukos and learned to spot the red flags and instantly keep away if I sense someone similar because it never ends well and you often cannot "fix" those types of people -- they need to "fix" themselves, and hopefully Kyouko finds a way to go on that journey. But yes, ON EDGE -- this episode was so tense and I almost forgot to breathe. Yes, I don't like just how sexually implicit her actions were towards Rei -- stay away, harlot! But yes, I feel this series is therapy too and I just want to hug and protect Rei! Here's rooting for himmm! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

2024-04-29 17:00:21 +0000 UTCShe has a really great VA and she IS interesting, but I want to see her develop AWAY from Rei, hahaha, but that is me very protective of him at this point! But yes, she's a picture perfect definition of a toxic manipulator and the writing with her and Rei is stellar, it just makes me loathe her so much. Like you said, I feel those that enjoy her type of character "truly," have either never met someone or experienced that toxicity in their own lives. I think it's cool to like a character because they're well-written, but at the same time not like her character at all -- which is where I'm at with her! :P Thank you for the comment!

2024-04-29 16:56:45 +0000 UTCThe thing with a character like Kyouko is that yes i want her far from Rei, i dont want her approching him, i hate her but at the same time i want to see more of her in the story because she is captivating to watch and she is interesting as a character. Her VA Marina Inoue ( Armin, Momo in MHA, Mai Zenin in jjk ect. ) is absolutly killing it. Kyouko really demonstrate the level of writing of Sangatsu, the mangaka pictured the toxicity of Kyouko so well and its so realistic, the fact that everyone hates her is just further proof, the more a character hit home the more you'll either love them or Hate them in general, because is reflects you're own experience most of the time.

2024-04-27 14:35:39 +0000 UTCThe presentation of Kyouko in this episode is immaculate. A lot of that for me goes to the outstanding performance of Marina Inoue. She is easily one of the best voice actors working and I can never decide if my favourite performance of hers is Armin or Kyouko. The range she has! For me I have always been a fan of characters that have “difficult personalities” and OH BOYYY you can tell by what we have got from ep5 and ep8 that Kyouko is just that. Never want her in your life but she is intoxicating to watch. And sadly I have had and have Kyoukos in my life. Your choice word of “poison” is appropriate. I still remember how on edge I was first time I watched this episode. The chills that I got when she said that his bedding doesn’t smell like him yet. The implied nature that borders into sexual in this episode with her with Rei is unsettling and the music throughout is just phenomenal, particularly the part where they both get ready for bed. Sangatsu is one of the few stories that comes too close to home for me. I relate to Rei on an almost painful level and Kyouko in this episode is just a bit too real. (Which I loved that you commented on how she is not a exaggeration) This series really is like therapy. And therapy majority of the time can be a painful experience.
